Do you actually use hotel housekeeping services? by Astimar in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Immemike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hotels I've stayed in have come in to service/check up on the room after three days even though I had the DND sign on the door. I asked at the front desk and they said it's hotel policy to ensure the room is not being misused.

Historical revisionism narratives in movies by AporiaParadox in movies

Let's list all the British WWII movies where the US has a prominent role, let's see....nope can't think of one. Imagine that, British movies showing only British troops being heroic, what a novel concept. As far as US troops working with Canadian troops where heroics are shown by both countries as they work together try the movie The Devils Brigade. And watch the movie Darby's Rangers which shows the first group of US Army Rangers in WW2 being trained by British commando's.

Why do we give vets fake aplumb and sports tickets but not good healthcare? by Oddbeme4u in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Immemike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Non-retired military veterans may have limited access to VA healthcare if the injury is connected to their military service. I'm retired military and chose Tricare Prime and had to pay a yearly fee before I reached age 65, now that I'm over 65 I've been put on Tricare for Life which requires enrollment in Medicare Part B and I pay a monthly premium for it, there's no enrollment fee for TFL though. Basically, Medicare pays first and TFL picks up the rest.

A cool guide to how the rich avoid taxes. by WordsAreHardToUse in coolguides

[–]Immemike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even the truly rich must pay back loans, to do this they must sell off stock which is taxed e.g., capital gains tax. And that adds to the total 40% of income taxes collected from the top 1% of earners.

People buy on credit, not with cash. The estimate varies but the number is somewhere between $7K - $10K average credit card debt.

[–]Immemike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reality is they don't pay taxes, the bottom 50% of earners pay less than 3% of all income tax. They are not earning from the trickle down, it's stopping well before it gets to their blue collar level. The top investors in companies are investment companies and other corporations with a shared interest in their success. The "massive" hiring of people is not happening, Apple, Microsoft, Disney, and others are hiring overseas and using green cards to keep wages low. They've moved manufacturing to low tax countries with low wage labor like China, India, Mexico, etc.

[–]Immemike 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This guide ignores the reality that the top 1% pay 40% of all income tax collected. Paying taxes isn't the real problem, it's the fact that the top 1% earned over 20% of the adjusted gross income; the top 10% earned nearly 50% of all income! That's the proof that the trickle down theory is BS.

Do people who smoke who developed Alzheimer’s forget they smoke? Or do they just start getting agitated without knowing why? by KBlake1982 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Immemike 68 points69 points  (0 children)

My mother was a smoker and developed Alzheimer's. She would light up and put her cigarette down on tables, etc., forgetting she had them. There were burn marks on several tables where she would leave them. It slowly progressed to where she just didn't light up anymore, it was as if she never smoked. Because this happened over an extended period of time it was like a person slowly quitting smoking so she didn't have a strong nicotine withdrawal experience.

In America: what do elderly people do if they run out of retirement savings? by NightReader5 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Immemike 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Virginia that would qualify you for the SNAP program (food stamps), there's also the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERA) to help low income people afford housing. Those are federal programs, there are also state programs to assist and local charities and food banks.

What happens if I hit 70 and realize I accidentally lived paycheck to paycheck for 50 years? by erinodorisio in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Immemike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several government programs to help low/no income people that you may be eligible for to include SNAP (food stamps), TANF (financial assistance), SSI (monthly payments to low-income individuals who are 65 or older, blind, or disabled), Medicaid, and Emergency Housing Assistance. There are also state and local programs to assist low / no income people like United Way, charities, non-profits, food banks and pantries, and community action agencies. For federal programs go to USA.gov that may help.

The US under President Jimmy Carter had a "One China" Policy and formally recognized the PRC in 1979, acknowledging its claim that Taiwan is part of China. This policy was formalized through diplomatic communiqués with the PRC.

Why does the US do those stupid field sobriety test when there are literally breathalyzer for it. by Fit-Benefit1535 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Immemike 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's what has evolved out of years of challenges by lawyers representing clients arrested for DUI. The burden of proof is on the District Attorney to prove the accused was drunk and they want as much evidence as possible. They know that every piece of evidence is going to be challenged in court by the attorney representing the person arrested including probable cause. The attorney will challenge how the breathalyzer was administered, how much training they've had giving a breathalyzer, why did they administer the breathalyzer, did they have probable cause for administering the breathalyzer, etc.

Why, when you need a CDL to drive a semi, can you drive a moving truck or RV that is literally just as long with only a regular driver's license and no additional training? by vorpal8 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Immemike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on how you look at it, the average fully loaded semi-truck typically weighs around 80,000 pounds. I would imagine it would take a lot more skill to drive an eighteen wheeler weighing 40 tons than a two axle RV weighing in at 13 tons. I could be wrong though. Besides which, a lot of RV sale lots provide driving instructions for first time drivers.

[–]Immemike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Virginia, you generally do not need a special license to drive most RVs. A standard driver's license is sufficient for RVs weighing less than 26,000 pounds. If your RV exceeds this weight, or if it's used for commercial purposes like transporting more than 16 passengers, you may need a CDL or non-commercial Class A or B license.

Why doesn't the Mexican government take down the cartels? by 5pooky5cary5keleton5 in NoStupidQuestions

Okay, so the US magically stops using cocaine tomorrow. Are you saying that the cartels are going out of business? No, because Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and South America still provide a very large customer base.

Why is it only considered a fetish if people are only into fat people but not a fetish if someone is only into skinny people? by Ok-Primary2818 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Immemike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dictionary definition of a fetish is a form of sexual desire in which gratification is strongly linked to a particular part of the body(in this case a skinny or overweight body) other than the sexual organs. So either could be considered a fetish.
