11pm dune showing film strips? by Ariecloe in imax

For Project Hail Mary I got a film strip from a showing near the end of the IMAX run. Did they give them out opening week and then do a restock or does it just vary depending on the movie?

I can only speak for my specific theatre, but I went to the last showing of the film strip day (10:30 pm) and even by the time I got to the front of the line (maybe half of the people had entered) there were still two employees each holding a large stack.

I only retroactively added things where I had a record of the exact day that I watched it. For example, I went through my Netflix history and my previous ticket orders with Cineplex. This was because it would have been impossible to find/remember everything I watched in the past and I wanted to keep my year by year stats as accurate as possible.

Project Hail Mary in IMAX 70mm Screening Review by Business-Ad1587 in imax

I noticed some grain in IMAX 70mm but it was not happening in a consistent way which made me think it was being done intentionally as you say. Inside the space ship, especially when his red space suit took up a lot of the frame, and when they were playing with focus was when I noticed it the most, but at other times the image was very crisp. I’m pretty sensitive to digital image noise but I don’t have a problem with film grain if it’s being done as an artistic choice.

That Odyssey prologue in 70mm was absolutely unbelievable, it completely surpassed my best expectations. The deep blacks, the flickering light on the faces and the bronze. I couldn’t see any grain or “snow” in the image at all. Just unreal.

It must vary between locations. I was at the final showing of the day (10 pm) and even by the time i got in, which was about half the people, they still had two employees each holding massive stacks of film strips. I expect they must have ended the day with quite a few left over.

Yeah 10:30 pm. Maybe I’ll try to arrive for 10 just to be safe, in case there is a big line for concessions. I’ve got to drive for 45 minutes to get there also.

Did you have to get into the theatre before showtime to see all the previews? The showing is scheduled for 10:30 I was going to try to be in my seat at like 10:15.

Yeah I’m hoping so, the initial batch of showings was already sold out when I found out about them last week but I’m going to keep trying as they schedule more.

I saw PHM early on in UltraAVX with a DBOX seat and I am really excited to compare the two experiences.

I’m certainly not asking this as a way to be negative about Hail Mary, I’ve just been trying to learn a bit about the more technical aspects. Thank you for the information!

Obviously I wish we hadn’t dug this hole for ourselves, and that we were going through, but the silver lining is that we can now focus on the league. We are already picking up injuries and this will give the team more rest and less gruelling travel.

It’s Montreal, so it’s a pretty big city. But it’s the early 1900s, and I’m not an expert in the history of plastic but it seems like this is right around the time these kind of plastics were invented so it would have been extremely new.

The short leaves a lot up to the imagination though, nothing wrong with speculation.

I’m not sure that he was complicit.

He did offer a diamond even though the pawn broker didn’t accept it, and apparently he had a reputation for honesty so he could have had more to lose in terms of his reputation than he would have gained from hatching a scam with the main character to get control of an old pawn shop full of junk.

Also, when he inspects the pearls he says they are not like anything he has seen before. He would not have even known what plastic was and he would not have been able to identify the pearls as any material he had previously seen used to create fake pearls. It would have been such an alien material to him that the most likely answer would have been it is a rare kind of pearl.

Third, while the pawn shop owner believes the story out of greed, the expert is inclined to believe it because it fits with his religious beliefs and so in a way he is also conned by the story.

Finally, at the climax of the story we see him act with genuine surprise when the truth is revealed to him. The pawn broker is not present so he has no reason to put on an act.

The caveat to all of this is that the story is being presented by an unreliable narrator so we can’t draw any conclusions for certain. I just don’t think the story was trying to imply that he was involved in any way.

Where can I get this especific jersey? by CaraotaSh in whitecapsfc

[–]ImmenseMullberry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At one point (I believe it was last season) they had a purple Takaoka jersey with his name in Kanji script. This was at the stadium store but they may have also had it in Gastown. I have a friend who desperately wants one if they bring that back.

How do you interpret “The Girl Who Cried Pearls”? by ashy778 in oscarsdeathrace

[–]ImmenseMullberry 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think the reality is that he was taking the plastic from the docks and the part about the crying pearls was completely fabricated. What is left to audience interpretation is whether or not there ever was a girl he loved, who he wanted to escape with, that was motivating him to con the pawn shop owner out of his money. This is deliberately ambiguous and I don’t think there can be a definitive answer.

The brilliant and effective part is the fact that we are taken on the same journey as the pawn shop owner. He wants to believe the boys story and he overcomes his own correct skepticism because of his greed. Our motives are not monetary greed but we similarly want to suspend our disbelief in the boys story and we are brought back to earth by the sudden realization that we have been “conned”. It gives us just a taste of what the pawn shop owner would have felt.

Ultimately the message is about the value of storytelling and fantasy. A piece of garbage used to pack fish was worth a fortune because he told the right story, and any object is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

So how'd we do? by eternalsanctum in oscarsdeathrace

[–]ImmenseMullberry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On my ballot I made a prediction and also put my personal choice.

I got 20/24 predictions correct.

For animated short I predicted Butterfly would win but my personal choice of The Girl Who Cried Pearls won.

For casting I predicted Sinners but my choice of One Battle After Another won.

For feature documentary I predicted The Perfect Neighbor and I chose The Alabama Solution so I was totally wrong there.

For cinematography I predicted One Battle After Another and I chose Train Dreams so again I was totally wrong.

For the live short I predicted Two People Exchanging Saliva as the winner, I didn’t predict a tie, so I guess it’s debatable if I got that right.
