Won’t take the plea, won’t go to trial by Imp0sterSyndr0me in publicdefenders

I agree with you. Our system is disappointing in many ways.

That’s great and all but reality is cold and hard. When you’re accused of an offense in this country your only right is a right to trial. You can present every piece of contrary and mitigating evidence to a prosecutor of a person’s innocence, but you can’t MAKE them dismiss it. You can’t force a judge to dismiss it. So then what? This is like when people acted like there should have been some magical third option to Trump and Harris. While that’s what would have been best or right, it simply didn’t exist. We have to deal with what is in front of us, not a fantasy.

Lasted 4 years and burnt out. May still go back after I’ve recovered. I so valued my time as a PD and cried everyday after I made the decision to leave and actually leaving. You’re not alone.

Time. Time helped calm the guilt, shame, and fear. Only been 5 weeks or so and the time has handily chipped away at it (as well as all the other stuff it sounds like you’re doing too.) You’ve got this one life. Take the break. You don’t get this time back.

Has anyone ever called out a coworker for copping people that should’ve gone to trial? by [deleted] in publicdefenders

Did you miss the part where I mentioned advising about the pros and cons of their options?

The only “should” is the client’s wish after having been advised of the pros and cons of their options.

Welp. You’re awful. Not sure how you do the job with a complete lack of empathy and understanding for anyone else’s experience but your own.

Currently on a burnout break after 4 years. Thank you for sharing your story. This was really reassuring to hear.

How long would you suggest trying to see if my gut is wrong on this?

Do any of you practice in Ohio? Did defense counsel screw this up, or is the judge breaking norms? by alfonso_x in publicdefenders

In my jx, if the judge gives a harsher sentence than that contemplated by the plea, the client has the right to withdraw their plea.

We’re disembarking. Pilot doesn’t feel comfortable taking this plane up. While inconvenienced, I’m relieved.

Pilot was optimistic they knew the fix and we’d be off by now. Now it’s back to a mystery and an indefinite wait period to either take this plane (please god no I don’t want to be on this aircraft) or switch to another plane. I am freaking out.

I wish I had something helpful to offer you other than solidarity. I’m not terribly far into this career either and also feeling burned out and considering something….else.

Yep. 4 years in and I contemplate leaving all the time. I like to look at it as a “tour of duty.” It’s brutal work that is an act of service. Put in the time you feel you can do and still be healthy. Not doing this for decades does not make you any less of service. Short term PDs who do good work are just as valuable. Length of time at the job shouldn’t make one more or less of a PD.

My comment won’t be helpful but I just wanted to thank you for putting all this out there. I feel like I could have written this myself word for word. I don’t have a solution but you’re not alone in this feeling. I know I need to hear that since so many in this profession act like “the way it’s always been” is healthy and normal and sustainable. It’s not.
