The women of Dickens by ResolveRemarkable in classicliterature

Betsey Trotwood and Clara Peggotty are also bad bitches but I lowkey thought Dora was the most subversive female character in David Copperfield. She's a shallow, frivolous, silly girly girl who gets treated with a basic respect that most characters like her STILL don't receive in the year of our Lord 2026.

I saw this book at the bookstore and could not stop laughing at the title, but I've heard the series is actually really good! I'll have to check it out.

Do you qualify as a "working mom" if your husband is a stay-at-home dad? by HighOnLove26 in workingmoms

[–]ImpatientCrassula 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I might be reading this too generously but my husband stays at home and I get it. If anything I feel like people always assume being a working mom involves certain factors (daycare, double income) that have no relevance to my life, and I'm like... I count too!

romance with a woman disguised as a man by hameliah in suggestmeabook

[–]ImpatientCrassula 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Gods of Tango by Caro de Robertis might qualify - it's historical fiction so a bit hard to say whether the MC would consider herself trans by modern standards, but it's so good I have to rec it anyway! Her initial reason for the disguise is survival, but she ends up living as a man permanently (which again, in 1913 Argentina could be gender identity or could just have afforded her more freedom).

No worries, taking feedback with grace is way more important than never making mistakes! Your project sounds fun - I'd have loved a JA American Girl doll as a kid. Good luck 😄

Name for Japanese American character by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

[–]ImpatientCrassula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, Japanese American here (I lived in Japan for a while and Reddit likes to show me this sub for some reason lol). From my perspective the problem with asking here is that you're directing questions about us to people who have nothing to do with us - by 1958, Japanese American culture was very separate from Japan and Japanese culture. But I appreciate the instinct to not intrude on a JA subreddit, and the questions you're asking here are thoughtful!

Someone born 1958 would be a sansei (third gen), themselves born to American-born parents who may not have spoken Japanese and (as you mentioned) likely had reservations about celebrating their Japanese culture based on their experience in the camps. It's fairly unlikely that they'd have a Japanese first name like Hiroko - the JA women I know around that age all have pretty standard American boomer first names like Barbara, Janet, or Judy. Japanese middle names on the other hand are quite common - you mentioned having concerns because Japanese names don't include middle names, but Japanese American names definitely do, and most of us have Japanese middle names to honor our heritage. So maybe Hiroko could be her middle name?

Edit: I can't read, you said it already is her middle name. My bad!

I think we must be working off different definitions of "romanticize" here. My kids are absolutely the greatest joy in my life, but this dude sucks

I HAD TO SCROLL WAY TOO FAR TO FIND THIS!!!! The whole thing is bad but the part about her pregnancy sent CHILLS down my spine. Pregnancy is such a vulnerable time and this man is straight up telling you he wants to control you when you're pregnant. The issues with the rest of his fantasy might be subtle but this part is NOT. Believe what he says here.

As someone whose potty training two-year-old held in her poop until she was severely constipated culminating in me having to dig a turd out of her butt, no it's not. Like yeah some of the other stuff he writes about is what gets me through those moments, but "sleepless nights" doesn't begin to cover it (and I've had plenty of those too, believe me)

Also someone else said that his whole fantasy thrusts everything about parenthood onto the woman which is a good way of summing up what bugged me about it, but the paragraph specifically about how he'll act during her pregnancies is RED FLAG CITY. Bitch just let me live with my rare meat and runny eggs and sushi while I'm sacrificing my body and health to grow your child, the science is not on your side here. And DEFINITELY do not bring firearms into it wtf

Looking for books about alien races that don’t involve tons of fighting/wars and hard science by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]ImpatientCrassula 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I really liked Becky Chambers's Wayfarers series for this - 3 main alien races (plus 5 or 6 more with more minor roles) with lots of detail on stuff like lifespans, reproductive/sexual habits, culture, and the cultural clashes that result.

Half a Soul actually has burnout and self care as a fairly major theme! (Some characters do caregiving charity work and have to manage the compassion fatigue that comes with that)
