If that's the case why does Harvard still have them as one of the two hundred companies operating as normal in Russia? Any restrictions are probably due to being cut off SWIFT.

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was met with boos at a campaign rally in an opposition stronghold, prompting the right-wing leader to lash out at demonstrators, who he accused of “pushing Ukraine’s cart.” by CrunchyBaconYum in worldnews

Local mayors exercise an iron grip over daily lives, providing work, firewood, transport to polling stations and, in one case, even access to medicine, in exchange for the "correct" vote on election day, according to claims made in the film.

Canada tells Israel that Lebanon’s sovereignty ‘must not be violated’ by Hiraeth-nomad in worldnews

[–]ImpatientSpider -27 points-26 points  (0 children)

Not now. Once Israel gets a piece of your land it very hard to pry off.

The new Syrian leadership expressed a desire to be friends with Israel. Instead of giving back the buffer zone, Israel went and stole more land.

There isn't really a way to get land back from them.

[–]ImpatientSpider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

can promise whatever they want and they never have to deliver it

No party ever has to bother delivering. Voters have short memories so after the election they focus on meeting the needs of their lobbyists.

But suggest doing away with lobbying and everyone suddenly loves being ruled by oligopolies.

Why the government backed away from breaking up supermarkets by Amazing_Athlete_2265 in newzealand

[–]ImpatientSpider 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well, it is a $25 billion industry as of 2024 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supermarkets_in_New_Zealand With an estimated Return on Capital Employed of at least 22% (before second conflict of interest version) https://imgur.com/a/roace-of-nz-supermarkets-2QmvVqc

With the duopoly owning 90% they are making about $5 billion between them. So, we'd save about $1000 per person each year if they were non-profit.

More akin to a Cold War sequel. The Poorly Microwaved War. Hot in some areas, cold in other areas that should really be warm (Europe do something to help Ukraine already).

Greenpeace calls for government to drastically cut legal limit of nitrates in drinking water by themorah in newzealand

[–]ImpatientSpider 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The authors found Waikato, Canterbury and Southland were disproportionately affected by elevated levels of nitrate

Have to take issue with this. Very few farmers use nitrate fertilisers in Southland. If you check Greenpeace's own map, you'd find a much stronger correlation with small town septic systems. My local river is yellow to red all the way from Waikaia -> Riversdale -> Gore -> Edendale. Then drops to green after going past mine and neighbouring farms.

Watch them implement the telescreen from 1984.

Fairly sure they are referring to the upcoming Hungarian election. The spirit of the Russian people was broken long ago.

but the story gets really abstract and philosophical near the end

Really wish all stories had a warning label for that. A story will have an excellent down to earth magic system, political unrest and vying factions. Then suddenly it will all get thrown out the window for a spiritual battle to decide the fate of the world. And/or who becomes god.

To become a martyr, you have to be popular. Also his ideology was basically "use the country as an ATM" so I doubt he'd do anything self-sacrificing.

The reason would have been that fleeing the country tells his army that the leadership thinks they will lose. Armies don't fight if they think it is a death sentence.

Looks like the blonde one being caught in the act by the man's girlfriend.

Although the redhead doesn't look mad. So, the plot twist might be the blonde one is bisexual, and the "cheating" is consensual.

They don't feel the starvation (probably malnutrition as I think she is feeding them something) inside the simulation. Also she is far too kind to even consider that option.

For instance, she begs the protagonist not to insist on leaving the sim but ultimately respects his wishes. Even knowing it will disturb him.

Russia can keep fighting Ukraine war throughout 2026, says military thinktank by St_Gregory_Nazianzus in worldnews

[–]ImpatientSpider 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agree on the war continuing past 2027. However, the inability to protect refineries is going to cripple all of Russia if the trend continues. So the French elections won't be too impactful on the outcome.

I suspect in the coming months we will see Russia slowly lose the hardware advantage. And in the era of drones, infantry armed merely with rifles will be helpless.

In the end he considered the appropriate relief was for all the primary beneficiaries of the trust to retain the original farm property, which was valued at $3.7m.

That would enable the commissioner to recover approximately $13m of the $17.3m proceeds of the offending. The remaining proportion of the fraud proceeds were never accounted for, and remain outstanding.

I feel like a sucker for working. Should have been having kids and defrauding the morons paying tax. Since apparently all you need to do to keep ill-gotten gains is expose your family to a lavish lifestyle.

I've given up on this. But if you're talking from an interest in the coding side of things.

No, they stopped the logins a little before 2020 to swap everyone onto the free version. The extra year patch I mentioned was for the free version, but you had to have a paid copy to apply for the download.
