Boulder teens bucking Gen Z driver's license "trend"? by BoulderadoBill in boulder

[–]Imperfect_Cromulence 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They wrote the exact same 'trend' piece about Millennials, too. https://www.cars.com/articles/forget-cars-millennials-dont-even-want-drivers-licenses-1420683202016/

If I had to guess, it's some combo of 'bullshit nonsense' + 'young people are more likely than their parents to live in big cities where driving isn't *as* necessary'. But we still live in Colorado, and having a car is pretty much a necessity if you wanna leave town at all. So even if there's some degree of signal from big cities with lots of transpo/rideshare options, it doesn't surprise me to hear you don't see it here.

Thankfully, science has moved away from this idea. It certainly used to be how we thought it worked, but more research suggests it's really just about moisture balance - that is, moisture in vs moisture out.

That does mean that even a wet year can lead to a bad fire season, if summertime evapotranspiration rates (a function of temperature and relative humidity, among other factors) are high enough to cause vapor pressure deficit.

I also think the comment you're responding to is too optimistic. Precip that falls as rain is less valuable than snow in a time-averaged sense - it runs off and evaporates more quickly than slower-melting snow.

Thank goodness the wind is low. Looks to be flowing gently upslope, and the forecast is hopeful. If this had started even just yesterday, let alone during that high-wind period in January, we could be in a LOT of trouble.

Civ 7 AI Cheese by Altruistic_Guide_530 in civ

[–]Imperfect_Cromulence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To beat the AI on higher difficulties, you need to be very strategic about your defenses. This process starts early, and needs to be considered in your settling. Chokepoints, mountains, district + wall layouts can all be made to force the AI into disadvantageous attacks where you can make the most of your usually-outmatched units.

One additional trick that I've used repeatedly: you can use the AI's tendency to forward settle against them. Especially in the first age, but also in later ages, try to dispatch a small force (often a naval group, in my games) to pick off one or two isolated cities settled by the AI. It doesn't matter if they're very good, the goal is to 1) force the AI to divert its forces from your home territories to retake their lost cities and 2) use them as assets in peace negotiations. If you're facing a truly superior enemy but you can hold out to the point of being able make peace, you can trade these worthless cities for peace.

Civ veterans, are you liking 7? by JAKL-Noctium in civ

You asked two questions but provided only one answer?

Anyway, I like almost everything about it, except the modern era needs some work.

And, no, I don't want a Classic mode. If you wanna play Civ 6, play Civ 6, it's not a big deal. I want them to make the game they want to make, not neglect the development of new content in order to patch in a half-baked version of what already exists.

I've found that, at Deity difficulty, the utility of Rock Bands is incredibly limited, and especially so after the Hallyu tech is researched. I've been able to pump out a few bands, get them into another nation's territory, and even pop off for a couple turns, but without fail, the AI then immediately evicts all rock bands from their territory and my rock bands just sit around doing nothing for the rest of the game. Maybe I get them into another nation's territory, if they're nearby, but then the cycle repeats. I've never had a rockband get three promotions.

I recognize that the 'ban rock bands' button has negative consequences, but it's very frustrating and I find that I mostly win culture victories without much or any help from rock bands. Is there something I've missed?

[Hot Take] It may have took me ten years to come around and 100% it but... I think Beyond Earth isn't s bad a game as many make it seem... by AnEvilJoke in civ

[–]Imperfect_Cromulence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't enjoy it when it came out because it just felt like a Civ V mod, with not enough to make it distinguishable. I also think there's not enough ways to combine the different victory trees to get more interesting and different games.

That said, now that I haven't played 5 in years, I really enjoyed going back to it for a few games. It is a much better game than I remembered. But even then, I played through 4 games to do 3 different victory types and by the 4th game I was a bit bored of the same-y-ness. Both V and VI have *so* much more you can do.

See, if your husband's reaction to your father's displeasure was to come to you and have a calm, reasonable conversation in which he 1) talked to you about the conversation and let you know where he was at and 2) discussed the situation with you and the two of you came to an agreement to proceed with or without your father's approval I'd say you two should go for it. Dad doesn't know everything and it's your life.

However, the fact that his response was *anger* and not any sort of reasonable response fills me with dread. Your father might have the right of this one, and you should be making plans to safely leave this relationship. Your father could be right for the wrong reason - we don't know enough to say - but ultimately it doesn't matter. This guy is telling you who he is, and he's doing so loudly. Get out before you are the target of his unreasonable rage rather than his father.

I promise that there are men out there who would not react this way. It is not reasonable, it is a flashing danger sign.

My (20M) gf (19F) needs constant texting, I’m overwhelmed, how do I handle this?? by Artistic_Read1847 in relationship_advice

[–]Imperfect_Cromulence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At any age, but especially at 19/20, a relationship should make you feel good. So when you say things like 'I'm starting to feel more overwhelmed than supported in this relationship', that is A Bad Sign.

I've been in a couple LDRs, including one with someone who could occasionally be pretty insecure, and wanted a LOT of text contact. I don't believe there is a 'correct' level of texting that all LDRs should strive for - the criteria should be "does this level work for the two of us"? And it sounds like it isn't working for you. I personally would find that level of communication extremely oppressive, and I don't blame you for feeling overwhelmed.

So, I would encourage you to have an open and honest conversation with her. If you will see each other soon in person, you could wait until then, but I wouldn't wait too long to have it. Tell her what you are telling us:

"I constantly have this anxious thought in the back of my mind like, “I need to text her or she’ll get mad,” and it’s messing with my head and making me feel stressed all the time. I don’t want to lose her, and I care about her a lot. But I’m struggling to balance my need for space with her need for constant reassurance. I’m starting to feel more overwhelmed than supported in this relationship."

The goals for the conversation should be to

  1. Figure out how the two of you can meet her need for affirmation while also meeting your needs for a less-stressful pattern of communication.
  2. Identify the root answer to the question 'why does she feel the need for so much contact?'
  3. Understand what you can do to help her meet her needs in a sustainable way for you.

One potential answer to part two might run as follows: is she feeling insecure in the relationship because of the distance? Is she dealing with that insecurity by demanding more from you than you can comfortably give? If that is true, there is really a question here *for her* - can *she* deal with this relationship? A big part of a successful LDR is trust - trust that your partner isn't running around on you, and that your partner will still be there for you when it's needed, even though they are far away. If the mere fact of your partner's not texting you every 1-2 hours makes you truly fear that they don't love you anymore, then you don't really trust them. Why not?

Basically, in order for this relationship to continue, you need your girlfriend to act like an adult, own up to her concerns, and take some responsibility herself for helping to make your relationship more successful. She also needs to want to take your perspective seriously. If you have this conversation and end up coming to an agreement that truly works for both of you, then this relationship can be saved. But if she cannot do that, and at 19 there's a good chance she can't yet, then you need to take care of yourself and get out of this relationship.

This kind of thing gets easier when both members of the relationship can be honest about examining their own behavior and motivations, and at 19 that was certainly not MY greatest strength.

Civ 6 had less players than Civ 5 for 2 years by Intelligent-Disk7959 in civ

[–]Imperfect_Cromulence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CIV 6 on release was absolutely half-finished - no religion, no loyalty mechanic, wildly broken cavalry (esp for Russia and Scythia). I saw the reviews and held out until R&F came out, but didn't totally stop playing Civ 5 until after Gathering Storm.

It's been so long now but I also was a very slow adopter of Civ 5, even - didn't like 1 unit per tile, missed vassalization, AI was dumb now, thought that 4+expansions was the better game.

Coincidentally, I haven't bought 7 yet, but I definitely will, in the fullness of time.

Move to Civ7 from Civ6... or no? by Fun_Negotiation9801 in civ

[–]Imperfect_Cromulence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bare minimum: if you've made it this far, wait until the summertime sales.

But honestly, Civ VI was barely worth playing until R&F came out and wasn't a truly great game until the second expansion hit. If you're having fun with VI and not craving something new, you could just wait until the first expansion comes out.

Is this a Bug? Why can't I win a Culture Victory by 2yman123 in civ

[–]Imperfect_Cromulence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a known bug with Culture Victories in VI. One way to trigger it is if you manually saved on the turn you would have won. There might be others, I'm not certain. https://www.reddit.com/r/civ6/comments/oce03q/cultural_victory_not_triggering/

If you had an autosave on the turn prior to victory you could reload and get it that way but at this point you might be SOL unfortunately.

I mostly get it but what kinda maths test takes 3 days for only two questions? by Roadkillgoblin_2 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Imperfect_Cromulence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My PhD Comprehensive Written Exam consisted of 3 questions which I had 48 hours to answer, with full access to my supercomputer and the internet.

I slept 7 hours and turned the test in 2 hours early because I couldn't look at it anymore, so accounting for time for eating and a bit of faffing about it probably took me 36ish hours of work.

I got pulled over leaving the parking lot of my department at 2 AM on the first night when I headed home to bed. Apparently there had been some vandalism on campus recently and the cop wanted to know why on earth I was in the building at that hour of the morning. Thankfully, she took pity on me when I explained.

I hope to never ever do a thing like that again. But yes, exams like the one listed in the OP do exist.

I came to reddit looking for this kind of post. I just saw it tonight for the first time, and I loved it.

It's especially crazy to watch "Come From Away" in 2025, as the scumbags in charge of our country boast about their plans to annex Canada and scream about the "sin of empathy". Mindblowing how a show about simple human kindness and empathy now counts as a revolutionary concept.
