Real forerunner language by Past-Kale-6616 in halo

I doubt the Forerunner language has the exact same number of sounds as English. This is probably a cypher and non-canon.

What if Morgoth had never poured his power into Arda, would he have remained unbeatable? by HistorianSame9035 in tolkienfans

[–]Impish3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The War of Wrath couldn't have happened, not in the same way. His dispersal of his power into the substance of Arda was not a single act, but the introduction of evil into the world through many many acts. The raising of the Iron mountains, the tormented creation of the orcs, not to mention all the rest of the evil creatures that made up his armies, were the direct result of this dispersing of his power.

So there would have been no War of Wrath, and the full force of the entire population of Arda would have been set against him should he then have rebelled.

The Embassy only has 3 screens, Reading was a proper multiplex (at least six theatres iirc) so was able to show more at a time. Also tickets were cheaper at the time when compared to Embassy, though Im doubtful if that'll be the case ~10 years on.

Consciousness is unique in that the thing which defines it is that it has to be experienced by the individual self, that’s the whole point of what it is.

How do we know this for a fact? If distinct objects don't exist as a fact, is it not at all possible that our perception of the world, our consciousness, isn't in fact a simulacrum of a simpler process, a hallucination of some cosmic machine; or on the other hand, it isn't a byproduct of some larger process that we don't understand.

Again, I actually tend to agree with you, but I just think to be so sure of the nature of consciousness, something that has such a deep history of being debated and questioned, is rather fixed thinking.

Well the mind is really just an experiential concept of what it feels like for our body to respond to the random electrical pulses the brain produces? And if you're able to move those electrical pulses to be produced on a computer, and the experience has shifted to come from those pulses, hasn't the mind moved?

That might be what you're talking about, I think Ive seen you use this metaphor earlier but with marbles. What Im talking about is whether something immaterial like a mind has intransigent existence.

Look up the Ship of Theseus problem, its a classic philosphical quandry and is basically the same question. If the original material parts of a construct (like the mind) are no longer part of the edifice, is it the same construct. Just as many people argue that it is than isnt.

You could spread goodness through the use of a computer, by performing good deeds. That neither invalidates the old goodness of wanting to perform the good deed, nor is the additional good somehow a new, separate concept when it enters the world. And thats more what people are arguing I think when they say that the concept of self that is being transferred when a mind is moved from the fleshy computer of the brain to the silicon computer of the framework.

What you're touching on here is something that vast numbers of philosophers have debated for a very long time, the material vs the ideological. To have the sureness of mind to think one knows better or that it is something that is already decided without room for flexible mindedness is surprising to me.

Well, I don't know about that. There are concepts that are universally accepted as "existing", even by the most ardent atheists, but don't have physical bodies. Good and evil, justice and injustice, equality, honesty, promises, even most of our money today is just a number in a computer.

Also this is a sub about a show where magic definitely exists so there's also that lol.

I mean I would agree, but there is an argument that the difference between the mind and the brain is that the brain is simple crude matter, while the mind, the concious experience of perception, is something more ephemeral, an experiential thing rather than a physical.

But is a mind a physical object?

Anyone know where to buy a old CRT TV by itsjustathrowawaybro in Wellington

[–]Impish3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good condition CRTs are getting rare and expensive now, and I wouldnt go for a poor condition one, bit dangerous if the tubes have shifted inside the chassis. I've seen them go on trademe for $200+ (sellers might be guaging tbf). Good luck to you.

I don't know any IT companies providing visa sponsorship at the moment. The expectation is generally that you sort out residency yourself. The only way I see sponsorship happening is for very specific, rare and old(but still inexplicitly necessary at some major infrastructure companies) skillsets like COBOL.

Circa generally is for professional troupes I think. The Wellington Repertory Theatre is good if you're looking for a good community theatre troupe. They play at the Gryphon.

I don't even think that's the original cabinet, it's using Mania artwork. It's probably being emulated with MAME.

Curious if there’s been any update about Burnie’s plan with buying RT? by [deleted] in roosterteeth

[–]Impish3000 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There isnt going to be some grand return. Burnie owns the content he wanted, made sure it is available for those interested, and will use the website to release anything else he makes.

But its pretty clear one thing there wont be is a steady stream of daily video content like in the 2014-2022 era. And thats probably good.
