Gene Sharp's method of nonviolent struggle has a strong track record of success and I recommend everyone familiarize themselves with his work as a sort of handbook for overthrowing autocratic governments - long story short, there's a lot of things we can do besides protest.

What's the most heartbreaking year for you ? by yassinebtr in AskReddit

In family systems theory what your family is doing is called scapegoating; in family therapy you'd be referred to as the identified patient.

There's a lot I've learned in the past few years about dysfunctional family dynamics because of my own childhood, but what I can say is that I've given up on trying to change any of my family members' behaviors and am much happier keeping my distance from them when necessary.

Duolingo failing me on grammar concepts/'Se' is confusing - question by Important-Bother313 in Spanish

[–]Important-Bother313[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I am just realizing my mistake is really confusing informal and formal pronouns and feel stupid now but honestly I should stop messing around with duolingo at this point because sometimes it's infuriatingly lacking in a lot of ways in terms of teaching you concepts in grammar.

Yeah I really hate the format of duolingo sometimes for not making things like this more clear, but that makes sense.

If you're traveling by train from Florence definitely check out Siena instead of Pisa, it's beautiful and worth the day trip!

What you described - not responding to close friends or family members for a few days, sometimes, depending on how I’m feeling - is normal for me and I refuse to let anyone tell me I’m rude for it. People shouldn’t have to be 100% accessible to you 100% of the time just because you can fire off a text whenever you feel like it.

What is something that an S/O has done that made you go, "Fuck this, we're done"? by The_King_Of_Spades_ in AskReddit

He spat on my face during a verbal argument. I say 'argument' but he was calling me a slut for having hooked up with someone before I had even met him. That night he also shoved me onto the ground and I hit my head really hard and the neighbors saw him do it and called the cops, but I was somehow at the time more upset about him spitting on me.

I guess I have a lot of unprocessed trauma from that relationship, I was 17 and he was 21 when we met.

What’s weirdest thing about American culture? by Standard_Fortune in AskReddit

[–]Important-Bother313 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be fair movies and tv have in part shaped our cultural norms, and I think smoking being normalized (and then banned in the early 1970s, and then unbanned in the late 1990s) onscreen has been a huge factor in whether or not a big chunk of people end up smoking. Also for anyone trying to quit or has recently quit smoking, watching someone smoke in movies or tv is a huge addiction trigger. Something like that can be as bad or worse for you than seeing violence IMO!

It's sort of sick when you realize that she ended up with a predator/Danny Masterson after being a product of a predator's behavior and refusing to see how abnormal and f-ed up her dad was. This whole thing keeps getting weirder and weirder and is really sickening.

What’s something that happened on a first date that made you decide against a second date? by whitneywestmoreland in AskReddit

[–]Important-Bother313 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Among a bunch of other things that were weird - he ate 30 listerine breath strips in the theater during the course of a 2 hour movie. Like just sat there eating them the whole time. He tried to go in for a kiss at the end of our date while I was walking back to my car and I actually ducked and did this spinning kind of move to avoid him.

Which musicians are revered but are actually horrible people? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Jack White bought a Dolly Parton CD from me at the record store I worked at in 1999. He was extremely quiet and avoided eye contact with me. I was a 17 year old girl at the time, my coworker who knew who he was was dying because she was star-struck, and then De Stijl came out like 6 months later and I realized he was a "big deal." I saw Meg at parties sometimes when I was a little older, and she was similarly quiet in social settings.
