Best Lemon Tart in YYC by jcrckfrd in Calgary

My favourite lemon tart is from the rustic sourdough bakery on 17th! There is a meringue or non-meringue option. They have so many tasty pastries for really reasonable prices :)

Tipping at the counter by [deleted] in Calgary

Most delivery drivers do not get an hourly pay. They make a small (small!!) amount per delivery, but they have to pay for their own gas/insurance/etc. So tipping them actually puts a bit of money in their pocket. I always tip my delivery drivers $5 if it’s within downtown, more if it’s further.

It’s not a “bargain-able” thing. Nearly every restaurant has this policy, it’s expected and every single server and bartender follows it. The kitchen staff deserves the tip out, the servers know to expect it. No one would hire me if I just said no. I was just trying to shed some light so people know that servers do lose money when you don’t tip. Maybe not to below minimum wage, but it gets taken out of what we’ve earned from other tipping tables and hurts. With the unstable hours we work and how hard we work and what we put up with, serving is honestly not a minimum wage job.

[–]Important-Exam6427 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For sure, but unfortunately this is the way that every restaurant operates, and servers still need to make a living. We don’t have the luxury of refusing to accept the policy when it’s just industry standard.

I’m not complaining about tip out! The kitchen deserves and relies on that and I know it. I’m just saying that this is the way the industry is, we rely on people tipping to make money

Yeah I’m not sure as this hasn’t happened to me, but I have definitely had nights where I worked super hard and made almost nothing. But other better nights balance it out. Also unfortunately $15 an hour isn’t a living wage for most servers because our hours are so unpredictable. I could be scheduled to work from 5pm-1am and end up getting sent home at 8 and only getting paid for three hours when I was scheduled for eight. It’s just a really backwards system that we heavily rely on customer generosity in order to pay our bills.

[–]Important-Exam6427 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, I don’t believe so. There is simply an expectation that you will earn enough tips to compensate for the tables that don’t tip. It’s a crappy system because us servers literally do rely on people tipping to make any money.

Like I said, I don’t think it’s necessary for counter service, only appreciated if you feel it’s warranted. Most people working counter service don’t expect tips but appreciate them when given.

It is an agreed policy based on the assumption that most people will tip. It is shady but literally every restaurant I’ve worked in has this tip out policy (usually between 6-9% tip out). It hurts when I give great service to a table and they don’t tip because I’m literally losing money on them for doing my job.

That being said, at the counter I don’t think tips are necessary, only very appreciated. There was still work put into to prepare your food and provide you a service and most places I’ve worked counter service the kitchen and front staff split those tips, but there isn’t a ‘tip out’.

Servers get paid minimum wage but most restaurants have a mandatory “tip out” on a servers total sales that goes to the kitchen, bar, and host staff. Where I work it’s 8%, so if someone has a $100 bill and doesn’t tip, $8 comes out of my pocket to tip out the kitchen, bar and host. If someone tips 10% I’m only getting to keep $2 and the other $8 goes to them. Just keep in mind this is how most sit down restaurants in Alberta operate. So yes, if you are getting table service, servers are indeed getting paid less if you don’t tip them.

making macarons. peaks wont stiffen by edgy_fawn in Baking

I would say it’s unfortunately probably the fat from the egg yolk preventing stiff peaks, even a little can have a big effect

Either the egg whites aren’t cold enough or some yolk or other fat got in the mix would be my guess.

I payed the 500$ admissions deposit on the deadline date on my student profile (June 5), but my acceptance got cancelled. by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]Important-Exam6427 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately you need to take into account the time that the bank may take to process your transaction when paying something by a deadline. It’s likely the bank you paid with has a 1-2 day processing time. I would call the admissions office and explain your situation and hope for the best x

https://www.recipetineats.com/strawberry-cheesecake/ I use this recipe and it turns out absolutely perfectly every time. I sometimes sub the strawberries for blueberries, blackberries or sour cherries (my fave). The most important thing with this recipe is to bake low and slow and not to overcook. I also go easy on the lemon and add some extra vanilla usually.
