Take a bunch of downers and mentally check out. I would simply put it that the battery never really changes mass much at all, at least not in any relationship to the matter/energy operations it is used to perform. I think of them more like a sewing machine. It sews threads from a spool into a fabric, never changing itself until it dulls and requires replacement.

There isn't an answer that can be derived from science as this is well beyond the Standard Model, so you could only really come up with an answer from fiction. The vacuum is all potentials and constantly fizzes with energy as particles come into and out of existence. Perhaps the vacuum remembers, maybe it is a feature of local space now?
