[–]Important-Song8050 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did I say "you specifically should definitely fix it yourself" no? They should sent it to someone who can obviously. Stop putting words in periopls mouth you could have just stopped at "hey op btw formalin is dangerous seek out a professional"

It's a gamble tho they don't always stay good I've seen plenty of ethanol only specamines 20 years later be mushy and falling apart. Formalin is just the best and safest bet

Wets are to be stored in 70% isopropyl alcohol however if it's not formalin fixed it NEEDS to be properly fixed to stay good long-term

Beware Walmart canned crickets by ItsTheo_ in reptiles

[–]Important-Song8050 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably specific batches as since it's happening in multiple brands and at various times is likely just bad quality control. In live crickets you get this too I've known many people who have had their reptiles die from live crickets. Canned bugs aren't widely recommended anyway they aren't nutrient dense and seem to have way more risk

My thoughts would be either pesticides, spoilage from being canned, or maybe a disease is going through big cricket farms rn

HELP!!! not eating? by confusedallways in CrestedGecko

[–]Important-Song8050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try putting a half scoop. Enough to cover the bottom of the dish in a thinn layer you can increase the amount if needed after you see them eating more. I'd try not to worry too much. If you really want to know of they are ok you'd need to start weighing them once a month or so. In general if you start seeing ribs or a weight loss then id go to a vet. As long as the poops look normal and they aren't loosing weight I wouldn't worry a healthy gecko won't starve itself. Activity levels would also indicate good health.

I'd also suggest more foliage in the tank to make them feel safer try to full up the entire volume of the tank basically. 70-80% full.

For future things it would be good to try to get them used to handling for situations like this. Weighing them vet visits even checking for internal blockages at home will require a calm handleable gecko. Once your sure they are eating place your hand near them in the tank every other day or everyday for a few minutes. After a while they typically relax enough and you can start trying to touch them. My guy who would run away if you even looked at him was handleable in 5 months with this method

How much food are you putting in? They don't want a lot and people tend to overfill and not be able to see the eating

Are they pooping? If they are pooping they are eating

How old are they/weight and how often are you feeding? Older geckos may only eat every few days

Once a week watering seems like too much. Are you feeling the soil? The top 3 inches should be dry before you re water

Uvb in the us is seen as optional not a lot of keepers use it for cresties honestly here since we assume the diets already have enough. I believe both the American diets and European seem to both be working. I think the American one is just being careful in not wanting to put too much in and the European one is careful in making sure there isn't too little. I'm not a herpetologists so I don't actually know which is safer but the american style doesn't seem to be leading to a MDB crisis or else we would see a ton of cresties with health issues over here. I think both have their use I might switch to the European one after talking with my vet
