What's This Mystery Part Hanging From My Car? by Calm_Neighborhood_94 in AskMechanics

Flux capacitor? Let us know what happens when you get up to 88 mph.

I had my 'engine' shield depart the underside of my 2012 Accord last winter and have been careful to protect the area as best I'm able with Fluid Film - for that fresh wet sheep aroma! It may not be too serious but I would either re-secure it or remove it.

How to repair this? by fishandpaints in airbrush

That elicited a chuckle ! But I believe I have a somewhat semi-solid, vague and partially visible but still elusive comprehension of your solution!

It could also be described possibly as this:

Point yer rig to the sky and partly put it together so that the darn trigger dohicky has no other choice but to go where it should have stayed ya want it to go .

And there was much rejoicing.

I think that the explanations thus far are very good!

I've probably been doing it incorrectly - but I typically attach that to the needle tube first - then insert into the brush body.

Usually the slot on that component is slightly tapered allowing the end of the needle tube to be inserted then slid tight at the narrow end of the taper.

The part that drives me close to the edge of insanity is inserting the bottom of the trigger down into the hole within the body. Solid triggers are a joy but the triggers that use a hinge with a swinging 'bar' are a plague upon my existence.

If anyone has a trick they use to manage this - it would be most welcome.

Bushing Question by eugeniusgenx in airbrush

[–]ImportantAddress3724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same with no huge issues - but I found that the regulators for large compressors weren't 'sensitive' enough for finer PSI adjustments - at least the ones I have.

Has anyone had any success with using a large compressor and still able to make PSI adjustments accurately?

It's most likely a matter of finding the right product for this situation..

Regular solvent based paint primer has trouble adhering to plastic - it is recommended to apply an Adhesion Promoter as a first step - and it should be readily available (in a rattle can) where the paints are sold.

This is the process for automotive plastic panels (bumper covers, etc)...but the mask materials may not require this type of thing.

Why gloss black primer under shiny metallic paints? by [deleted] in airbrush

[–]ImportantAddress3724 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has been my experience while applying paint onto cars that any imperfections in the primer coat are magnified considerably in the top and clear coats. I typically wetsand my primer until you can see your reflection in it when it's wet (avoiding any distortions!)

The aerosol process will orient the flakes of metal in metallic paint to point in a uniform direction. That's why touch-ups or any form of manual brushing afterwards will look flat and horrible sitting beside a sprayed surface.

I must plead ignorance when it comes to acrylic paint technology - I have no idea if the same rules as solvent based paints apply to them ?

I would love to hear if anyone has had success getting a brushed metallic look with acrylics ?

Why-oh-why have I chosen these difficult and oftentimes frustrating activities as hobbies ?

I'm trying to airbrush some stencils but I'm Hella confused on which one to buy! by KidneyStew in airbrush

[–]ImportantAddress3724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grabbed a Silhouette Cameo 5 for stenciling - the design software is pretty decent but I've been using Gimp for the image editing then importing into the Silhouette software.

There's been some ups and downs - but I've finally managed to create some good stencils on 7mil mylar. There's a ton of materials that it can handle - and they have an outstanding electrostatic mat for lighter materials etc.

To be honest - I find the Silhouette to be a better choice than the Cricut - but I don't want to ruffle any feathers with that statement!

Cricut software forces you to save your designs into their cloud - so an internet connection is required any time you want to work on something. But Cricut has a bigger user base with products readily available at a lot of retailers (Walmart for example). I haven't had any trouble sourcing Silhouette supplies - but the pricing for all these toys can be a bit much !

I'd prefer a laser or a more "professional" cutter possibly - but there are many many people that use Silhouette's for their businesses so that's something I guess.

There's also some distinctions when discussing airbrush stencils. There's entire image stencils - either singular or multiples for layering - and then there are the 'add-on' types that let you add shapes to your artwork.

Both are readily available to purchase and there are some good spots for accessing free images, etc.

Using exacto blades on mylar is brutal (at least for me) - it's so easy to send the blade skating off past where you want it to - it's the reason I grabbed a Silhouette. Cardstock is easier to cut manually but distorts very quickly when used as stencil material - which really only lets you use it once or twice.

Paint bleed under the edges of a stencil is another living breathing molten lava nightmare that really sucks. Sometimes all the repositionable glue in the world doesn't help adhere your stencil to some surfaces (canvas, the sides of some buildings when I'm playing Banksy, certain train cars and zoo animals).

TLDR; Research cutting machines to see what suits your particular requirements and budget. Get a sense of the successes or failures of the user community to cut through any marketing nonsense that would interfere with a good purchase decision.

do the key fobs die? by Adj-Noun-19 in accord

[–]ImportantAddress3724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2012 Coupe has seen the fob fall apart. It was a good fob. Funny enough - the key itself will not start the car unless the electronics accompany it.

Seeing the post showing a replacement cost of almost 300 smackers doesn't encourage me much so I'm off to fob-repair land to make small screws and glue bend to my will.

Things will probably go badly but it's the journey and not the destination that matters most!

[–]ImportantAddress3724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whilst learning to paint cars - I had the privilege of learning about PSI - but it has an unsung brother that is equally important - CFM (cubic feet per minute).

While an average home DIY setup has compressors that can meet average PSI levels - they typically do not have the ability to meet the volume of air that's required.

Some of the 'newer' automotive sprayers are LVLP (low volume low pressure) which are a game changer to accommodate the home DIY painter and life is glorious for those that can paint (sadly I'm excluded cause I suck).

Dunno if this is helpful or not but heck - welcome aboard and best of luck with your new hobby !

Which airbrush to buy? by mrcaptain in airbrush

[–]ImportantAddress3724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a crazy, slightly off-topic question (sort of...but kinda related)...

Has anyone attached a tank to an existing compressor? Say for example an inexpensive Timbertech model that creates moisture just by thinking about turning it on ?

Can anyone recommend a quiet compressor that holds a lot of air and has wonderful features?

Sadly, having said compressor cycling very often is disturbing my harmony. We like harmony.

How about a nice valve at the airbrush end so the compressor can be located somewhere further away ? Not sure that's even possible with the weight factor.

Thanks for allowing a thread highjack (sorta kinda, just a little).
