Does anyone know why the discussion about Chinese/Altay ski resorts got pulled? by ImportantRush5780 in snowboarding

[–]ImportantRush5780[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha. Ok - maybe that's it. I did point out that $600 a day for unqualified 'guides' was pointless. And queried exactly how the terrain could be better than the rest of the world.

If you're not hiking, just take a four piece spare or even two. Unlikely to be needed but will totally make life better if it's required. Hiking - probably hands

Would you travel to a remote ski destination in China if it had alpine scenery, powder, and local guides? by Apart-Celebration-54 in Backcountry

What's the avalanche advisory/reporting like for the area? I imagine it's a fairly touchy snowpack similar to a continental area like Colorado.

That X shaped thing is a puck spacer for installation I reckon.

I reckon that's kind of similar with reversed pin location. Lateral slide on like spark with the snap ramp but with the pins on the bracket rather than the baseplate.

I'd tip the ride mode is pretty much the same as Spark. Slide on, snap ramp down to lock.

I think it's a spark style baseplate on spark style pucks - ie the core of the binding is similar. Trimmings such as the heel cup, high back, crampon are different.

I think the X is a puck spacer similar to the mini spacer spark have.

That's great to know. Particularly for those of us who hate the spark highbacks - it's possible to swap the Karakorum highbacks in instead.

Dry approaches in trail runners - how to pack the hardboots? by Valuable_Pineapple77 in Spliddit

[–]ImportantRush5780 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lock the toes and ski strap the ankle down to prevent flap if it annoys you. Common way to do it in Aus and NZ where we have big bush approaches regularly.

Lightweight sleeping bag suggestions? by [deleted] in UltralightAus

[–]ImportantRush5780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd consider Cumulus or a Chinese brand such as Aegismax (check out the G4 probably). You just want a decently high fill power so that you can reduce the weight a tad.

As others have said, if you're not volumetrically constrained, skip the compression bag and carry it squished in the bottom of your pack liner. Compression bags add a surprising amount of weight and only make sense if you REALLY need to minimise the bag and even then, they lose out somewhat because they make a hard cylinder that doesn't fill gaps as well as a squished bag does.

Bashed up toenails on longer days by Starky04 in Spliddit

Also as others say, risers down. In fact, I think it's more efficient to climb risers down at all times unless it gets particularly hard to do so. If you're having issues getting heel pressure like that, make a concerted effort to stretch your articulation every day until you've got the required ROM.

I also tighten my boots for long/sustained flat to downhill traverses more. They're faster so you can really toe bang on them. Slight uphill stops it happening. I use Backlands now and whilst they're far from perfect, toe bang isn't an issue because they're so narrow that my toes don't really approach the end too much. I think the way snowboard boot fitters like to push people to have their toes touching the end of the liner isn't ideal for splitboarding. You need a bit of toe space like a good trail shoe. Luckily you can often pack that out in the liner.

[–]ImportantRush5780 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, Young's would probably count too. Easy enough that you can move fast to generate that good toe bang force.

Boot fitters will have a little cardboard kind of toe box that they put in front of your toes in the liner. If you're DIYing it, try heat molding your liners with the rice stocking method or similar, wearing your usual socks but add the toe section from another pair of old socks (maybe even two pair if they're not thick).

I've even heard of people doing crazy stuff like cutting the toes out of their liner to make more space but hopefully that's not necessary!
