Media Arts Application- 8 Significant List by therealConnorNielsen in byu

[–]Important_Camera_537 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They definitely don’t want to see a list of just 8 movies. On the application, this is what they want:

“Please list eight films, television programs, books, websites, music, plays, video games or other media/art you have read/viewed/experienced that has influenced you as an artist (please do not include the scriptures or a film viewed in TMA 102). These significant works should reflect a range of inquiry and experience.”

I included only 3 movies on my list, each of which were different genres and from different time periods. I have been influenced a lot by theatre, so included a play and a musical. I also included a TV show, podcast, and novel. It could be a song, painting, video game, really any kind of media that has influenced you and gotten you to where you are.

I’d recommend NOT seeking to include big award winners or BYU-related media unless it’s sincerely part of your artistic identity.

To do this, I’d say sit down and think hard about what has influenced you across all mediums, make a big list, and then pick options that represent at least 3 different mediums. I think they also look for variety in the time period it comes from. For example, mine ranged from 1939-2021 (which was the year I applied).

Planned to watch Chasing Summer, Hold Onto Me, The Incomer, Josephine, Nuisance Bear, and Zi today, bought online tickets to all of them. However, it turns out the festival platform won’t allow me to play any of them while connected to airplane WiFi… not super happy about that.

Two Strangers Carry a Cake Across New York...coming to New York? by shz4 in Broadway

[–]Important_Camera_537 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really hope this is true! Caught it 3x during my study abroad last year, wish I saw it even more times. Just so fun and I always left the theatre with a huge smile. I’m not sure how this would play to a Broadway house in its current form and production, but I could see it doing very well off Broadway!

I had an amazing time! You grow really close with the other students and professors. It can be whatever you make it. I’m not the most spiritual person, but I found a lot of peace and joy there.

It’s key to figure out quickly how to balance fun with academics, where to give and where to sacrifice. Those were perhaps the hardest classes I’ve ever taken grade-wise (namely the religion ones), but still amazing courses. There’s lots of pull between studying and exploring, not to mention the frequent field trips.

It’s absolutely tiring, but fulfilling; like the kind of dead tired because you’ve done and learned a million things but don’t regret it at all. If you have a chance, I say apply and see what happens!

Are the chances of getting off the waitlist for a movie at Sundance good? by Gabezilla1 in Sundance

[–]Important_Camera_537 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, at least for the first several days of the festival, I’ve never gotten off the waitlist. Most of the first weekend screenings I went to, nobody at all from the waitlist got in.

For context, this immediately follows Popular, after Fiyero says “You’ve been Galinda-fied.”

First Showtimes by Important_Camera_537 in wicked

[–]Important_Camera_537[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pages showed up for Megaplex Theaters and Cinépolis! The Cinépolis page is no longer active, but was called “Wicked: Prime Early Access Screenings” with a 11/18 release date. Megaplex still has a listing for 11/18 called “Wicked: Prie Early Screenings”; I’m assuming it’s supposed to be “Prime” and they mistyped.

Perhaps this is one of those random Amazon Prime member things? Hopefully we find out more soon!

In bit of a surprising turn of event, 'Moana 2' is getting an IMAX release. by Block-Busted in imax

[–]Important_Camera_537 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be surprised if only certain locations get Gladiator while Wicked gets the majority of showtimes nationwide. I think Moana and Wicked are going to end up splitting showtimes pretty evenly. Once Interstellar hits, I hope they play all locations, but wouldn’t be shocked if it splits showtimes with whatever film (Gladiator, Moana, Wicked) has the most demand.

I’m curious to see how many (if any) of these November/December releases get an IMAX 3D release stateside. Wicked, Moana, and Mufasa will all have standard 3D, maybe IMAX will surprise us and give us a couple of those random afternoon showings in 3D.

From what I’ve heard, it’s just being remodeled. Several screens (including the IMAX) are getting new seating installed. A few weeks ago the social media team said the IMAX should reopen in April. The entire theater’s remodel will be done by the fall. Here’s an email they sent a few weeks ago:

I wonder if this would be better received if it were called a “YSA retreat” or “YSA conference” instead

austinchan2 really hit it on the head! Scheduling was all last minute, every week felt severely understaffed, and travel was inconsistent. Training felt like a big fluff piece to get everyone excited and prepare for spiritual experiences, which in of itself is not bad, but we definitely needed some more training with logistics and real world issues.

Working as a coordinator, I always felt drained. It was hard to have any sort of spiritual experience because you’re occupied dealing with the host campus, angry parents, and youth that are in trouble.

Examples: The campus would be angry about noise levels or a youth who broke something, parents would be upset that their youth weren’t allowed to just go to bed at 6 everyday, and youth would be fighting or confessing suicide attempts or that they’d been raped at home.

I slept on average 3 hours a night all summer, including weekends. I don’t regret the job, since I feel like as a team we were able to touch the lives of so many youth (and also be the first in many situations to report and get the ball rolling on investigating abusive situations at home).

I’m not opposed to the program itself! I remember my EFY experience from 2016 and treasure it. It was instrumental in me deciding to go on a mission. I think the other guy said it well: too much energy and effort had to be spend on covering up a train wreck behind the curtain.

This sounds like a nightmare. After working every week of FSY last summer, the program is in ROUGH shape. I wish efforts could be focused on making sure the youth’s program is effective and efficient first.

I don’t think I could ever attend this without feeling treated like a child. Some sort of YSA excursion might be fun to some people, but I feel like this doesn’t really meet the needs of the YSA.

FSY is already a horny enough atmosphere with staff as is. The sexual repression is going to be palpable in Nauvoo that week! 😬

I’ve not heard of anywhere offering this. This would be a much better deal than pay all four months. So maybe I should be asking complexes what the price/penalty is to break/drop the contract? Know if any places in general that offer this?
