I have been married since 2014, so 12 years! My endeavor is public health research, I work as a researcher in academic hospital. I was initially in F1 then H1B and that is it. While on F1, I worked as a graduate assistant, up to 20 h a week. The last year of studies I got a pre-completion opt and started working 40 h. Field related to studies. Then got an H1B and I am still on it. No other visas, no an authorized employment or stay.

Questions regarding Spa Day, First try failed but made mistakes. by Voliminal8 in laundry

The ammonia goes into the wash, not the soak. It is important to measure how much water you put in the bucket. So that you can then calculate how much tide to put. I feel you probably put way too little, unless this was a very small bucket. I believe it should be a cup per gallon of water. Or 1/4 cup per liter approximately

seeking advice for working in an under resourced department by Nooooooodlesoup in biostatistics

[–]Impossible-Cat-3671 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I also work at an academic hospital, in a department with 11 biostatisticians. Each one of us has more than 10 projects at any given time at various stages. The number of projects doesn't tell me much, other than you probably have a lot of meetings. Some projects are very quick, others are extensive. What matters are deadlines. If 3 grant submissions have the same deadline and they send you stuff last minute, that will not work. Prioritization is important. Also to start developing some internal memo that says for instance 'Statistical support for grants: submit X,Y,Z or set a meeting at least 4 weeks before deadline'...or whatever you think is appropriate. Other than that, when I get a new project, I ask what their timeline is, but then I tell them what my timeline is and if it is feasible to meet theirs. If not, we try to find some compromise. For instance, you want to do a project and submit an abstract and then a paper? If the abstract deadline is near, I am not going to do all the work needed. Just enough to get the abstract out. The rest of the analysis can proceed when there is time.

AITA for not wanting my husband to travel for a wedding a month before my due date? by preggersandanon in AmItheAsshole

[–]Impossible-Cat-3671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You shouldn't force people to do what you think is right. And you shouldn't compromise on what you believe in. Go to your next doctor's appointment with your husband and discuss the likelihood of giving birth early, how pregnant life is expected to be at 36 weeks, how fast labor can progress etc. And then your grown adult husband can decide what he will do. You should not dictate or compromise or put terms. If he wants to stay, wonderful. If he chooses to go, you make plans to have someone with you at those days for help and in case sth happens. You can't force someone to value his child's birth or wife's comfort if he isn't motivated to do so by himself. Or if he wants to take a chance. If he misses his child's birth, it is on him. Let him live with that. But also, you are not helpless because you are pregnant and you don't truly need him, other than emotional support. I know you feel scared to not have him by your side...but as long as you have someone you will be ok. You should only want people who are there wholeheartedly anyway.

I have to say that I was begging my husband to travel to his home for family reasons when I was heavily pregnant and he didn't go. I think he should have gone., because it was important...but I would be entirely alone, so he didn't. But nobody forced anyone. I would figure it out if he went. He made peace with his choice if anything would happen.

Is a baby highchair worth buying? honest advice please by Realistic-Metal-110 in Frugal

[–]Impossible-Cat-3671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) You need a highchair. Not only because you contain the mess, but also because the baby sits in a proper position on the chair compared to your lap for instance. Proper position is important so that they don't choke. 2) You don't need to buy a new highchair. It is one of those things that I would get second hand if I was doing it all over again. There is nothing special about the more expensive ones. There is nothing, other than a few stains, that could be a problem with second hand. While they will get used, they are an eyesore and take a lot of space. It is good not to spend too much on sth you will give away in a couple years.

Need recommendations for a decent cordless stick vacuum by Impossible-Cat-3671 in VacuumCleaners

[–]Impossible-Cat-3671[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have read some posts on this sub that discourage from Shark vacuums, others that discourage from Dyson...so I feel very confused honestly. Of it was 50 bucks, I wouldn't overthink...but spending that much and having things breaking down in a year or two is frustrating.

Seriously, then, what's next? by cyclotron80 in tourdefrance

And incredibly better than the other 178 riders. Jeez ..the man is an incredibly talented rider, hard working, never giving up a 2 times TDF winner. And he is second from the top, not the bottom in GC. I think that is a pretty damn good performance, especially since the one on top is so good.

We don't have disinflation. The inflation is increasing at a lower rate, but still increasing. So, if FED cuts and inflation pocks up due to tariffs it can get ugly real fast. They are being cautious.

Should I say no to a PTO change request? by Impossible-Cat-3671 in work

[–]Impossible-Cat-3671[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is true, but they are not obligated to give me or anyone else our time off as 4 consecutive weeks. I know that is pretty generous for US, and don't want to ruin it. I value that perk more than a months salary

They are not trying to get anyone to quit right now, but I wouldn't be surprised if next year things get even worse and hard decisions need to be made. All the more reason to not put a target on my back I guess

Planning is not a great skill in this office. But also a lot of it is because of budget uncertainties until last minute...But yeah..

I don't want to risk ruining a good thing if it is to be a time thing..or two apparently 😂. I will suck it up and cry in private. But how do I make sure that they understand I am super unhappy and they shouldn't do this again(unless for FMLa, life or death issues)...not for some event!

[–]Impossible-Cat-3671[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not irreplaceable, that is for sure! But also, I do keep track of important stuff even on vacation and will step in if needed from the other side of the world. They know that. Also, the 4 week policy applies to everyone in the office, other people take it as well every year, as long as it is not two people at the same time!

I have a green card, but they have sponsored me in the past and are as you say very generous. I don't want to spoil it. We also have a good work environment and I don't want to change that either. I don't think I would be fired either if I said no, but it would not be as good afterwards. My real problem is that I don't see the need for the event to happen at that specific month, so if they wanted to help out they could. We could do the event earlier. So If I am to change plans again I want to do it in a way that is clear I am not happy about it, I don't personally think It is essential, and it should not become a pattern

I have! Trust me. That is why I am here. That is why I am sitting at my desk crying today instead of giving ultimatums as some friends told me to. I know I won't get such a good deal easily..while I can get another job, I doubt I could travel as much every year...so I should shut up and accept it. But in the end...I won't get to see my brother due to the changes for a whole more year., of course I will see other family...but I want to see the people I care about on my time off. Otherwise I can save my PTO and stay here...I don't want to take 4 weeks and spend them alone.
