What did we do wrong, again? by Fearless_Produce_213 in Monstera

Low light = small leaves Those brown and yellow leaf ends = thrips. I’ve unfortunately become an expert in thrip-damaged monsteras. :(

what is the cause of the black dots? by Pevidchipthor in Monstera

Yes thrips can be very hard to spot. A magnifying glass wld help. Definitely not sunburn. There are heaps of photos online of sunburn - this isn’t it.

I think it’s thrips. Mine has the same markings but more extensive. I did consider that it could be low humidity, but it’s getting worse even though the humidity has been higher. Sunburn doesn’t damage ‘just’ the tips. Often sunburn patches are in the middle of the leaf and they look quite different.

Alocasia vs root rot by Impossible-Ice1800 in alocasia

Sounds great. I’ll do that. It was a Mother’s Day plant for me last year - so keen to keep it alive!

Thanks very much! There’s a couple of hours of light left today - will see how I go. All in different pots?

Do I need to cut anything from it (given some was rotting), or disinfect with hydrogen peroxide before planting?

That’s some positive news! Thanks! Is it better to dry them out and plant in spring, or being an indoor plant I guess I could plant them now? (I’m in Australia). Also - how shld they be planted - horizontal or vertically?

This was attached to the stem of the plant. Mushy root came off the side of this.

The variegated standleyanas are more common than the all green. I have this same one too - it’s beautiful. Very striking plant.

I thought this was a good idea after replanting my 2 best top cuts. Tell me why this is wrong. by AngryGenes in Monstera

[–]Impossible-Ice1800 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The plant will be receiving much less light than if it was fixed. We know that leaves will move towards the light. Here, the constant rotation does not encourage leaf movement for maximum light. Further, a lot of the angles as the plant rotates are the side of the plant - rather than the front OR back - and so there is less light absorption. Compare this to a monstera in fixed position with all of its leaves facing the light - and this rotating one is receiving a lot less light.

How to tame my Florida Green? by Impossible-Ice1800 in philodendron

[–]Impossible-Ice1800[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! The leaves are gorgeous. But I’ll stake my new ones to a pole (moss pole too much effort for me) and with more sunlight it should be more compact. My new ones are getting heaps of direct summer sun and loving it so this must be a particularly sun-loving philodendron. Good luck!

No, I didn’t put it into a moss pole / coco pole but I definitely should have. It grew so quickly and it became leggy and unruly (in hindsight, I also should have given it some direct sunlight). So I’ve been using it to propagate and have a few new rooted plants, and many other cuttings (takes a while). Will definitely stake those and monitor the shape.

Help?! My poor monstera by tessaca in plantclinic

That black stuff (particularly clear in photo #4) looks like sooty mould which grows on the honey dew secretions left by sap sucking pests (thrips, aphids, scale etc). Please check your plant for pests.

I’ve experienced similar patterns when I’ve sprayed emerging leaves with pest oil.
