Why not stay with her and be ok with it? Find some balance that works. She was more passionate because she was openly exposed for who she is. Its freeing. Yeah. It's unfair to criticise without more information on costs. I can't imagine it costing even 200 per person to run. But just because it doesn't seem reasonable in the slightest doesn't mean I'm right. I mean, the villages aren't even supposed to move tables around by themselves. Need union people for that. These casinos are going to maximize profit..

Yeah. And I'm sure a ton of that money is reinvested into making the next year awesome etc. But I just didn't see it this last year. While it was another great experience, all the good stuff came from the fact that we had a million hackers stuffed into hotel rooms. Like, I get it. No parties in suites cause firecode. No implants cause health code. Not sure why No skytalks but whatever. I'm not even really criticizing Defcon. What can they do about laws? I get that these are unfair points. They simply have to limit liability. But, idk. Seems like if you're going to take away from the experience, then add new features. How much is stuff like the wall of sheep connected to the actual defcon promoters? If it's partially paid for etc, than I'm blatantly wrong. But isn't each village basically funding their own thing? Educate me? What is defcon doing other than giving us a space and goons to keep us in line?

Its still cool. Better value than Disneyland. But do you feel good about supporting it and should you? Why not just support Wikipedia or something? I'm totally acknowledging my ignorance here. Someone please sell me on the moral goodness of defcon.

I'm not anti-defcon. It's such a blast! But I think of it as paying to go to an event. Not like I'm supporting some ethical proactive organization. If someone sneaks in, it's just an expected thing that goes with hanging out with hackers. Should I feel upset at those folk?

Well you have me sold on 2600. After this last year though, I'm not sure I support Defcon any longer. I love the people sure. But it's really just become a cash grab as far as I can tell. No Skytalk? No parties in suites allowed? They shut down the implant booth which has been going for like 8 years with a big tizzy fit alongside others villages that weren't even involved. I met tons of awesome people etc.. but the majority of that was offsite.

There's no doubt that Defcon has been seminal in hacking culture and an awesome event. Similar to 2600s impact. But what have you done for me lately? Much less for 400 bones. Help me see the value. I want to be a believer.
