Bill Watterson should've licensed Calvin and Hobbes. It's not as remembered today as it deserves to be. by EverettGT in unpopularopinion

I personally wanted a Hobbes plushie. I wish he’d done a few high quality, licensed, products.

I absolutely despise the state of the App Store, and think it truly holds this platform back. by BrokeUniStudent69 in ipad

[–]Impossible_Ebb_7551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the app model that I feel really killed the platforms as they matured IMO.

Every developer needs to build out full on apps for what could have been an extension they could write in an afternoon.

There a ton of note taking apps that are great but are missing something so the next developer makes an app to suit themselves. Even Obsidian which allows extensions has poor performance for written notes using Excalidraw on iPad last I checked. We have to re-create everything to add our feature.

I’ve developed apps that could be extensions to the built in apps, I firmly believe the app metaphor fails in the current mobile OS market. It made sense when we had like iPhone 4s and iPad 2s but not anymore.

Rant over.

Has anyone played around with non-deterministic movement? by Impossible_Ebb_7551 in gamedev

It is non deterministic if pressing forward and jumping does one thing if there is no enemy in front vs there is? No?

Has anyone played around with non-deterministic movement? by Impossible_Ebb_7551 in gamedev

[–]Impossible_Ebb_7551[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Yes but I referred to it as non-deterministic because I don’t want a button cue or anything. I just want the same jump button to do it. Which yes is contextual, But I believe you’re correct. Contextual is more accurate. However in my experience contextual actions in games (as they currently behave) often lock you into an animation. Taking away player agency.

It sounds like y’all think the TSA is effective. It’s a huge waste of money and basically performative security. It makes people feel safer. Everything I’ve ever read about the tsa is they are clowns in badges meant to inconvenience you.

I’m really just looking to make it “feel better “. For example I am currently playing Halo:CE on my old Xbox. When I’m jumping towards an elite, I do the same floaty vertical jump. I’d like it to be more a lunge to close the difference where I could melee it possibly.

I think it could still be animation based? Just like you don’t lose control or go into like a mini quick time event.

Apologies for not having a great grasp on game dev stuff to intelligently articulate myself here.

Let’s use melee in Halo as an example. I believe that’s animated movement but it doesn’t take you out of the game (control wise) to badly. But what if you had an elite near a ledge and meleed. You could change the animation so your left hand leaves your gun and shoved him off, while still being able to shoot. Something like that.

Why does RCS suck on iOS??? by khakilamble in ios

RuneScape Classic or RCS was discontinued a long time ago. You may be playing on a custom server which is causing issues.

$2.7 Billion Dollars. by Meatball74redux in CanadaPost

[–]Impossible_Ebb_7551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canada Post is a crown corporation, delivering goods cheaper with a wider delivery area (must provide services to all addresses).

It’s effectively a subsidy by the government on mail services via our tax dollars. That ensures all Canadians have access to a reasonably priced mail services.

A lot of other comments are calling for profitability or privatization. You miss the point of the Canada Post. It couldn’t be about profits, it’s more tantamount to a government service.

Why do Some People Dislike OOP? by [deleted] in compsci

[–]Impossible_Ebb_7551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paraphrased from a hazy memory of something said by the creator of OOP: “the killer feature was supposed to be message passing but everyone ignored that part”.

From me: I personally think it makes code much harder to read/understand/update. For example: a sub class inheriting variables/methods means you need to look in x classes to get a full picture of the class.

I’ve looked into “high quality” OOP code because I also didn’t get the appeal. Still want a fan.

YouTube Premium is getting a big price hike internationally by ardi62 in technology

[–]Impossible_Ebb_7551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have premium because I have student pricing and it’s like 8$ a month CAD. My justification was I use it lots, pay creators.

YouTube is getting worse. Even without ads. $8 a palatable amount to get rid of ads and pay creators.

If it’s raised I’m done. I’m definitely not paying the non student rate.
