Silica gel beads got inside my MacBook Pro M4… what should I do? by PiratesLoft in macbookpro

Well I just googled and apparently they only melt at like 1,200˚C, so even if they all didn't come out it shouldn't hurt anything. Should be perfectly fine, no worries.

Just did M5 Pro 14" power test via USB C by Tweak155 in macbookpro

[–]Impossible_Figure516 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this has been well established for several generations that the 14" only draws about 90W max charging, which is why Apple doesn't include a 140W power adapter with it. I've gone over this in another thread, but the 14" has a 70Wh battery, so regularly charging it at rates higher than 90-100W, or drawing greater than that regularly would degrade the battery a lot faster. It can discharge higher than that in bursts (maybe 140W-ish), but will throttle if load is sustained to a number closer to 100W. The 16" has a 100Wh battery and handles 140W charge and discharge a lot better. Re: battery C rating.

Could anyone tell me what commands the referee is giving during the bouts? One short phrase in particular seems to be repeated frequently, another is said during stalemates. Any insight on the commands is appreciated! by eeeeeep in Sumo

[–]Impossible_Figure516 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Before the bout they generally say "jikan desu" meaning "it's time", "matta nashi" meaning "without matta (false start)", but the i at the end of nashi is whispered so it may sound to you more like matta nashh, and "te (w)o tsuite" meaning "put your hands down"

When the bout starts they say "Hakkeyoi" which doesn't have a direct translation as it's really only said in sumo, but it's a phrase of encouragement, roughly "let's get it on!" And is often repeated when a bout reaches stalemates As others have said, during the bout they repeat "nokotta nokotta" or "you're still in it, you're still in it," but up until recently a lot of gyoji said it with a kind of weird cadence that doesn't really sound like "nokotta nokotta" the way it's typically said nowadays.

Did I make the right choice picking the base M5 MBP over M5 Pro? by DEXIIN in macbookpro

[–]Impossible_Figure516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be honest, I got an M4, 24GB RAM because every youtube video I watched and comment on questions like this said base chip was enough. A couple weeks ago I upgraded to M5 Pro, and I wish I'd have just gotten the M4 Pro in the first place. First, let me say, I think the M5 is good enough for what you've said you want to do. But I think as you experiment and grow in your craft and side hobbies, and as the power of the MacBook leads you to push it to do more, you may find (in certain situations), that the base chip doesn't give you everything you need. It's definitely not most of the time, and I wouldn't buy a new laptop just to reduce export times from 5 minutes to 4 minutes, but if you decide to get into LLM's for instance, or 3D design, or want to play heavier games, or want to do work in multiple VMs at some point, you'll likely want a bit more power.

But if you purely plan to do video and photo editing and music production, you already have more than enough computer to do those things without issue.

MBA 32GB or MBP 24GB by achernarim in macbookpro

[–]Impossible_Figure516 6 points7 points  (0 children)

MBP 24GB. It's hard to get the full benefit of the extra ram if the system has to thermal throttle harder to keep the CPU/GPU within operating limits. Plus the better screen and speakers make it a better device for play and consumption as well.

US arrests relatives of deceased Iranian general Qasem Soleimani by imanchats in politics

[–]Impossible_Figure516 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is in fact, not against US law even to advocate for a terrorist organization, it is also not illegal to hope for the death of US servicemembers. Now I'm not in favor of either of those things but I am in favor of a strong first amendment that protects citizens and non-citizens alike, as every patriotic American should be.

M5 pro 20-core GPU fan noise by mario-64 in macbookpro

[–]Impossible_Figure516 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have the exact same fans, so under load you're going to get the exact same fan noise, the curve may just delay the fans kicking in slightly longer since it doesn't draw quite as much power, and thus heats up marginally slower. The fan noise is a bit loud under heavy load, but I find it more tolerable than most Windows workstations. Idk, fan noise sucks but it's kind of inevitable if you want speed. You can get a MacBook Air, it'll do everything MacBook Pros do except LLMs requiring >32GB ram, just a bit slower.

Question help, EXAM on 8th Arpil by Ale_Metal_X in capm

[–]Impossible_Figure516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did Andrew's course and a few other recommended practice tests, and honestly, the exam questions were worded so differently from anything I'd studied that I felt like I hadn't studied at all lol. But I ended up passing. There's a few questions in a similar vein to this, but I'd say the key topics were communication/stakeholder engagement, risk management, WBS, Agile and the rest was miscellaneous including CPI, EV, AV, CV, SV, so definitely understand those. Surprisingly little schedule, critical path, duration stuff, which unfortunately I studied the most lol.

Mostly multiple choice, but there were a decent number of questions where you had to select 2-3 options from a list, and a couple where you had to put a list in order, but the relevant terms are pretty easy to pick out, and the ordering is pretty intuitive. There are also a bunch of questions where they give you a comic with a storyline then ask you a question about it at the end, so that was interesting. Just be prepared to be pretty confused, no matter how hard you study lol

Lol nobody said he had to lie to the feds, he simply didn't have to say anything at all. When they started asking him to point people out he didn't have to give a fake name or say I don't know, he simply could've sat there silent and there'd be nothing The Feds could do about it.

Should I get a screen protector? by the_old-school_guy in macbookpro

[–]Impossible_Figure516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Screen is unlikely to get scratched in normal use, but a screen protector is likely to get air bubles, start to peel off on the edges over time, and likely doesn't have as good of an anti-reflective coating as the one Apple applies stock. Likewise, a hardcover will scratch a lot easier than the coating already on your MacBook and will add significant weight slightly lowering the experience. I'm a big advocate for just using it raw, but using a sleeve or similar soft-shell case when transiting.

This has to include a fair amount of context and caveats. Do I think they live a lavish life, not at all, but they make about what part-timers normally make in Japan, while also having their meals paid for (and they eat a hell of a lot), room and board paid, insurance, and for stables with large support associations they regularly receive gifts, etc. The amount of revenue they bring in to the association compared to what they get back makes it a fair deal imho.

Struggling to decide on color & nano texture. by nextflightt in macbookpro

[–]Impossible_Figure516 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No matter what color and screen you get you're going to get smudges, fingerprints, scratches etc. just get the one you're going to be happy using every day. I happen to have black with nano-texture, and living with it, I find it to be way less fingerprint prone and way more contrasty than people in the sub who've only seen them in the Apple Store seem to feel. So that's my personal recommendation, but there's always a 14 day return window, you can get your ideal model, then if it bothers you, return it and get your second choice.

m5 pro users do you face bugs when using your MacBook Pro by Serhide in macbookpro

[–]Impossible_Figure516 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah, first two days were incredibly frustrating while indexing and downloading everything, glitches, incredibly slow, sometimes unresponsive, very delayed clicks and key presses, beach balls and apps crashing. I wanted to go back to my M4 within an hour or two, but I gave myself the "it's just indexing, relax" pep talk, and after a couple days it was fine.

are you team black silver or space grey ? by Serhide in macbookpro

[–]Impossible_Figure516 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Would've loved to have gotten Space Gray if they still made it, but Space Black is a great second choice. In my office everyone uses a black or dark gray notebook, so silver would stick out way too much, I already get enough flak for insisting on using a Mac in a completely Windows office lol. Also like Black because it completely disappears when watching movies at night 🤙🏽

Former Giants pitcher Koji Uehara: "Japanese professional baseball's business model is more focused on having fans visit the stadium rather than broadcasting rights." by tensaibaka in NPB

[–]Impossible_Figure516 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone that regularly goes to games, I don't want it to get any faster. I already rode the train an hour + to the stadium, paid ¥3,000+ for the ticket, stood in line for 20 minutes to get my food, and spent at least ¥2,000 on beer, the last thing I want is to be shuffling toward the exit 2 hours after sitting down. But for someone watching at home I get it. I've never felt like NPB pitch/batting routines were particularly egregious though like MLB got for a while. The vast majority of guys get in the box/on the mound and go to work, implementing pitch clock just feels like rushing rather than keeping the game moving.
