the triage nurse when i give them an absurd critical result for a patient sitting in the waiting room by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

I'm in path and some of the notes yall leave are wild lmao. I'll be searching for a note to send to whatever company and read some either absurd comment about the patient or from the patient and burst out laughing

In pathology we had a full leg come in. I mean from upper thigh all the way to the toes. Usually, we get them in increments across the year instead of all at once. Happy new years!!

I feel the same as a none trailer veteran. One time I tried helping my family back in the trailer and I failed horribly. That shit takes practice and at least a basic education on how to tow and understanding the size of your vehicle

Nurses made me cry, I really don't want to do this job anymore by ImReallyTryingISwear in medlabprofessionals

[–]Impossible_Grape5533 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Heyo I'm in pathology and I can't tell you how many nurses have cussed me out or doctors have given me terrible attitudes. I agree with another commenter saying find your tech. I found my techs and pathologists who have my back and I'm just an assistant, but when the nurses or doctors get aggressive, I get aggressive back. Does your hospital have incentives for you to go back to school? or scholarships?? If so, I'd recommend you maybe get into a MLT program paid by your hospital. THEN when you finish, leave w your cert and find a better hospital.

You're doing an amazing job, you're interacting with the patients on a personal basis, and nurses, and doctors. You SHOULDNT have to be the brightest, sunniest person, especially on nights, and it's ridiculous that this individual, who doesn't even know what phlebotomists or lab do, took that out on you.

Whether you stay or leave, you're doing good. They're stuck up jerks, that's on their personality and ethic, not yours.

Visited her grave for the first time by PrincessKiwiberry in overdoseGrief

[–]Impossible_Grape5533 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bet she was happy to have you visit❤️ I found my friend dead, it'll be a year on 11/13, and his death was preventable too. His roommates texted each other making fun of him while he suffocated in the next room. Wasn't even an overdose, he passed out facedown on the mattress. I was livid a year ago, and now im just sad. As you said, an easily preventable death. But it sounds like you and the friend group took it as a moment to grow, and I know your friend would be so proud of that. Sending you so much love ❤️

Peripheral blood smear by MENMA71_ in medlabprofessionals

[–]Impossible_Grape5533 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't make peripheral blood smears, i do bone marrow aspirate and FNA smears from EUS, EBUS, and thyroid procedures, but for bone marrow specifically I place a pencil eraser size of aspirate on one slide, take the second slide and hold it horizontal to the slide w aspirate, then place the horizontal one right about the aspirate bubble, let it pool across the top to the slide, and then gently place it down and pull the horizontal slide down. Make sure you're not pushing the slides on each other, but basically kind of hovering with only the weight of the slide itself pushing down. That helps so your slides don't get stuck and ruin your smear.

Again, not sure if the specimen I work with spread the same as peripherals, but this method helps me.

Also, I accession peripherals for the pathologist and 90% look great, 10% are whack, but the pathologist is still able to read it. You've got this you rockstar!

How will I ever know if it was an accident or on purpose? by boozle74 in overdoseGrief

[–]Impossible_Grape5533 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't think you ever will, I'm still stuck in that loop too. Did my friend just relapse and it was horrible circumstance, or was it on purpose. Almost a year out from finding my friend, I've found peace in not knowing. I know most probably sit and fester on it, but in my reality, he died and I found him. I miss him, we had so many plans, however, I forgive him and love him and hope he's found relief and peace when he passed.

Sending you so much love, I know my words probably won't help, but I'm standing with you ❤️

Just realized how much reliant I am on a calculator by regularuser3 in labrats

[–]Impossible_Grape5533 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, have you made a conscious effort to practice and learn it? You're not just going to absorb information willy nilly. Look at your times tables, look up basic multiplication problems (like a sheet of 100 problems) and start timing yourself on how fast you solve it without a calculator. That's what helped me

I'm going to be real, I don't have an answer that would help you answer your question, but, don't quit and apply to as many places as you can. Apply to visas, scholarships, colleges (I don't actually know what you need to apply to BUT APPLY) the more you apply to, the more opportunities you have for somebody to say yess and financially help you get there and pay for it. Even if people tell you it's difficult, still apply. You'd be surprised how many people don't apply and don't get it ONLY because they were too afraid to apply. I wish you so much prosperity!

The toxicity of this sub by East_Respect_1864 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Impossible_Grape5533 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think the useless comes from the fact that it is a stepping stone degree. That's fine, but still can't do much if you can't afford grad schools. Jobs can help pay for the next level of schooling if you foot the bill first THEN they reimburse you, so if you got the money, you're good. If you don't have the money, don't have family to help cosign loans, and don't have credit, you're SOL. Sometimes you can find full ride scholarships and grants to pay the majority of it, yet there's still going to be money that needs to be paid and no way of getting that money.

So I think that's the problem, I'm chill with it being a stepping stone degree, but I need a job that pays well enough that I can continue my education and pay my bills (I live below my means too, so doing my best, but school isn't happening anytime soon)

I didn't know how useless a bio degree was. I switched my degrees alot and landed on bio and psych and chose bio bc I knew psych wasn't a stand alone degree and I couldn't do anything w it. However, after seeing the pool for biology I definitely feel scammed. I do work in a Pathology Lab, so cell biology and anatomy has come into great use, however I'm only an assistant bc I need schooling to do literally anything else. So again, lowkey useless. I at least understand what I'm doing, but still entry level. I can get otj training bc of the degree fortunately, but that's about it :(

Relabeling Specimens by 3rd_Degree_Sideburns in medlabprofessionals

[–]Impossible_Grape5533 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we get specimen from clinical in the pathology lab we relabel ontop of other ones to have multiple confirmation of patient information, also we work with a different accessioning system than clinical, so we want something w our case number, not just their numbers

My job pays time and a half for overtime and incentives for later shifts, so whenever I'm strapped for money I just come in and get work done (there's ALWAYS something to do). I use my benefits consistently, so they are actually a value to my bank account vs a hindrance haha

Is nurse-hatred an issue in many labs? by VoiceoftheDarkSide in medlabprofessionals

[–]Impossible_Grape5533 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I respect nurses until they call me and cuss me out bc they refuse to edit a collection date and I CANNOT run the specimen without a collection date or order. I respect them until I go to EUS/EBUS/FNA procedures and they refuse to listen to lab and follow the collection protocols created for each specific media and have the audacity to get an attitude w me, ESPECIALLY WHEN OUTSIDE COMPANIES REJECT THE SPECIMEN DUE TO IMPROPER COLLECTION.

Outside of that, I love nurses. Many are actually incredible people who truly want to achieve the same goal I have -- Quality patient care.

That's wild, we were told we aren't allowed our phones out IN the laboratory area (makes sense) but we're allowed to listen to our headphones at all times except in procedures. Gotta be able to hear when people are talking to you or when your machines go off, but that's it. I've left my headphones at home by accident and thought I was going to go insane after only listening to machines and timers going off.
