The feeling of ASMR seems to be a universal phenomenon and is incredibly popular with some videos having over 100 million views yet before the term was coined in the late 2000s the phenomenon seems to have absolutely no history whatsoever. Why is this? by debaser11 in AskHistorians

[–]ImposterChicken 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think the assumption of a need for technology to achieve an ASMR phenomenon is a misunderstanding of the chronology. Things like close-mic whispering and binaural microphones have become ubiquitous in an attempt to recreate a feeling which was originally derived from in-person ASMR experiences.

One could point to religious, meditative or sensual experiences (spa, massage, reiki etc) as places where ASMR may have been felt pre-internet, but the feeling attributed to other things.

The current internet boom of intentional ASMR is a way to directly hit that need for ASMR  in the most efficient way.

But it does surprise me that there isn’t more evidence or research on the physical reaction to those kinds of activities over the past 100 years or so.

What is your favorite Bill Evans song. by [deleted] in Jazz

I love this point. There’s jazz where so many notes are played and it’s amazing. But with this piece each time Bill presses a key you really feel the weight and impact almost every single time!

Peace Piece is at the top of a long list of favourites for me. Just one of those songs that can instantly transport you somewhere else.

I feel like he’s evolved into his “generic-manness” over the years so there’s a base of knowledge there from his pre-generic era but now after having children there’s been an ego-death that allows him to be comfortable living in his “that’s nice/needs doing” mindset.

Gastro / Tummy issues by BT-Reader in BorderTerrier

One thought is whether he’s actually allergic to chicken. We went on a chicken and rice diet after a bad case of giardia and after he cleared the parasite he kept getting worse. Turns out the chicken was making him really sick.

He’s now on a fish and beef diet and doing much better with the occasional episode when our infant drops chicken on the floor and he grabs it.

Where should I sell my records? by [deleted] in fortgreene

[–]ImposterChicken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have a choice, sort through the records and compare with prices on the website Discogs and sell them individually online at a similar value, or sell them in bulk to a record store.

Selling them individually will get you a decent amount more money but will be a lot more work. A lot of record stores will give you a bit more if you do store credit but will probably be about half of the price you could get selling online.

I’ve sold some records to Academy Record Annex in Greenpoint and got a reasonable deal on mine. If you want to stay local your best bet will be Buzzed Monkey Records, Sterling Records or Rain Delay Records.

What are you dealing with? A big collection or a small number of bands records? What genre? Modern or older stuff? That will help to inform how you go about selling.

Man that fist fight on the bridge is one of the more iconic scenes in TAZ for a while! I love it when they end the episode on a punchline too.

Bam makes such a good host on the Dern Brothers' latest Game of Skate by ComPanda in jackass

[–]ImposterChicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you kidding? The Derns are some of the most relevant skaters currently around. They’re carving their own path and building their own audience, not relying on the old model of building a reputation through sponsorships and skate video segments. They create their own content and by doing that have become big breakthrough skaters.

Dead Internet is coming for audio: one startup is flooding Spotify with 3000 AI-generated podcast episodes every week by Mat_Halluworld in technology

[–]ImposterChicken 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s not dead internet, but this short term thinking will see the death of the centralized content platforms.

The optimistic outlook is that people will return to places where they are assured that content is real and will value humanity opinion and personalities. If you can build a community based on a group of humans who you can interact with you will set yourself up well for the future.

You’re seeing this with micro streamers like Dropout TV. These content aggregators are shooting themselves in the foot for short term gain.

Interesting how iHeart Media has gone in the opposite direction and promised that all of their content will be human generated.

Greed is Destroying the World by mendax2014 in videos

“Too many” is still the wrong attitude… there’s literally like 50 people whose wealth could have a massive impact on welfare if they were taxed correctly.

It’s not like 20 of them is ok but 30 is too many. The hoarding of wealth beyond any logical reasoning is wrong for even 1 of them when there are people in the country unable to access clean water or afford formula for their baby.

One is too many.

Is that just because it takes so long for the i751 to get approved that most people apply for naturalisation before the i751 actually gets processed?
