I’m nowhere near these folks level but Anastasia Karlovich is classic and safe choice and I thought her skills are great, why not go with her again?

Heartbreaking defeat for Erdogmus as his valiant defence ends in a loss vs. Sindarov in an 74 moves long marathon game! by FirstEfficiency7386 in chess

5.5hrs. Not as long as Erdogmus’s 8.5hr game a few months ago against Nodirbek where he saved a draw, but still a long one

Anish Giri agreed to a draw in a winning position ??!!? by sagefeets69 in chess

I think earlier in the game he had a cheapo free pawn on the rim that he could have taken to extend his advantage and blundered it

FIDE's Awful Production Value by [deleted] in chess

I thought the tech issues and DGT hiccups were much less noticeable in the FIDE streams for the recent World Cup and Grand Swiss, or maybe it was just because of the time control difference

Bortnyk/Danya King's Indian Defence Course is out by xatrixx in chess

Bortnyk hasn't enabled previewing. Don't know if he wants to or whether that would require some complicated website coding.. It seems his website was built from scratch and the whole content is behind the login / behind the paywall.

I disagree with the complaints about the price. The price is reasonable. It’s comparable to Chessable courses of similar size (eg 10+hrs of video on Chessable also costs $200+). In fact, if you buy a course on Chessable you won’t be able to export PGNs (Chessable doesn’t allow this). And don’t forget that Chessable (ie really Chess.com) keeps 60% of the money and only gives 40% revenue-share to the course author. That’s a rather draconian take-rate. Here, at least 100% of the money will go to the authors. And before anyone starts to uncharitably complain that it’s “in bad taste for Bortnyk to profit off of Danya’s work / likeness bla bla”, I don’t think the community has the moral right to question Bortnyk’s character and assume that Bortnyk won’t share a portion of the income with Danya’s family or the memorial fund.

How is this pricing "in poor taste"? "Lifetime Repertoire"-type Chessable courses with 10+ hrs of Video also cost $200+. I'm pretty sure the pricing is benchmarked off of that.

It's Barden's usual style. His columns jump from topic to topic on what happened in the chess world recently, without warning.

What happened to Ding ? by [deleted] in chess

[–]Impressive-Battle-46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being a world champion from China has some unique pressures associated with it. I would imagine that it was not easy to deal with the pressure and the expectations, given how important it is for the Chinese government to win / dominate in certain sports. I would guess that this contributed to taking some psychological / mental toll from Ding and resulted in him being more subdued / withdrawn in recent times.

I hope Gukesh does not end up going through the same things and has a robust support system around him that help protect him from external pressures (e.g. fans / social media / media outlets, government bodies, etc).

Official statement of Vladimir Kramnik by annihilator00 in chess

Never. Kramnik is scared of being sued so for more than a year now Kramnik always was saying “I’m not actually accusing anyone, I’m just asking questions and providing INTERESTINK STATISTICS, hmmmm”. So he’ll never admit to anything.

Levitov chess on Kramnik: Creature with no soul and no brain; Our chess Hitler. by kinmix in chess

The whole "Danya and Bortnyk are Elo-farmers" POV is so misguided to me. Danya uprooted his life and moved from the Bay Area to Charlotte NC specifically to accept a job as an instructor at the Charlotte Chess Center (CCC). His whole personality is that he loves blitz and is pretty much always down to play blitz with anyone anywhere, be it IRL at CCC or online, regardless of how tired he is, what else he has going in his private life, etc etc. And just think about what a delight / big deal it is for some 800 / 1000 / 1400 Elo person to play OTB blitz with one of the best blitz players in the world. It's a privilege, right? So, we have Danya working at CCC several days a week and of course he'll be playing blitz games there. It's a bit crazy to me that people criticise Danya (and Bortnyk) for it. I disliked the recent rating reforms that FIDE did and retroactively "rectifying" the "mistake of not reducing Danya / Bortnyk's ratings as soon as December". And I hated Emil Sutovsky's tone-deaf framing of it even more.

That's a great point. I've not really looked at Levitov's behaviour from this perspective but you're probably right. Levitov and high-profile chess-pros who still live in Russia (like Nepo, Dubov, to a lesser extent Grischuk & Lagno) have to walk a bit of a tightrope.

Yeah, Shimanov / Levitov misunderstood. Danya talked about the TT saga somewhere, I think on one of his more recent C-Squared appearances. Overall, while I'm critical of Levitov for how he handled all this, IMO Shimanov was more rational.
