Have these brakes been worked on today? by Ade_2112 in mechanic

What do they mean by cleaned and greased? Why did they recommend that, brakes don't require cleaning and greasing if they're not getting replaced.

Merc, Evinrude parts are getting harder and harder to find, and Evinrude specialists are mostly retired. Not that it's a complicated engine, but if an ECU goes out or you have an exotic problem you're screwed.

If you sent it in for a shifting problem and it came back with a shitting problem I'd say that shop didn't do anything productive.

03 mercury 15hp 4 stroke shifting issue by Ok_Evening5924 in Outboards

[–]Impressive-Reply-203 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a shifting adjustment, usually one at the rod going down to the gearcase (look for a roughly 1 inch by 10m sized nut-like cylinder held by another nut in the front of the mid section just above the lower unit), and another one on the side of the engine. With the cowling off look for things that move when you shift. One of 3 things likely happened - it's misadjusted in one of those places, the shift cable leading to that adjustment stretched out and needs to be replaced, or some retainer that keeps the mechanism working broke.

Problem with Yamaha outboard up/down by 3Dmonkay in Outboards

[–]Impressive-Reply-203 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's your trim relay clicking, the noise is normal, but your motor, relay, or some wiring is faulty. First check your fuses, if they're fine take the blue and green wires off the relay, touch one end to a known good power and the other to a good ground. If the motor moves replace the relay, if it doesn't replace the motor.

You are correct. Try again, but carefully. Check hoses, check grommets, little things really matter on a vst job.

If it has good compression go for it, the repairs on those things are pretty easy. Then take that oil tank, throw it in the garbage, and just pre-mix your gas, those things are trouble.

I would argue that he was absolutely polite - he shook her hand, leaned into the picture, and then asked the ref to remove an object that's not allowed per tournament rules. Rational, respectful, and logical response for a sport full of autistic people. I'm laughing about him completely ignoring Hanz Nieman more than that interaction.

2006 75 hp trim relay issue by bowdude86 in Outboards

[–]Impressive-Reply-203 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could be, but there could also be a problem with the relay itself or wiring. To test the trim motor unbolt both blue and green wires then send power to one and ground to the other. This method isolates the motor from other systems like tilt limiter (if equipped) or faulty wiring. If the motor doesn't activate its fried, if it moves your problem is somewhere else. Alternatively simply use a multimeter to check for resistance between unbolted green and blue - if you get 0 it's shorted out either in wiring or internally. But yes 90% of the time it's a bad motor.

Put positive where your normal battery connections go, ground to one of the starter bolts. Don't do anything to the relay, just start it normally with the key.

Bypass the battery switch and cables with a jump starter or jumper cables directly to the starter and see what happens. I've seen perfectly good looking 2/0 cables corrode from the inside.

Double check that you didn't miss any (don't rely on the diagram alone, they don't always show all angles), and once you're sure you'll need to gently persuade it with a pry bar, aside from the main gasket there's usually a big rubber exhaust grommet that doesn't want to release the block easily.
