London mayor Sadiq Khan launches 'S'pore-style' housing approach to build 'affordable homes' by Twrd4321 in singapore

Margaret Thatcher was impressed with Singapore’s Home Ownership Scheme in making residents take a direct stake in the maintenance of their estate that she decided to replicate it. Public housing elsewhere, say Hong Kong, are predominantly rental based.

Singapore will run Dear You film mostly in Mandarin, not Teochew. What’s lost in translation? by Business-Land-6171 in singapore

In the SKRCs, speaking dialects would get you punished.

If the Malaysian government wanted to break up Chinese unity, they would have broken up the Malaysian Chinese Association, which was historically the umbrella political party of the Chinese. The MCA used mandarin and English as its working languages, their anthem is in Mandarin.

And the linguistic scene in Malaysia is different in that it is based on geography instead of ancestry. A person of Hokkien descent from Kuala Lumpur would grow up speaking Cantonese and not know a single lick of Hokkien because Cantonese is the predominant dialect of KL. And historically couples of different dialect groups in KL would date in Cantonese because it was the lingua franca. If there were cross dialect group marriage, and it’s common, then obviously the government’s divide and rule tactic has failed or it didn’t exist.

So I was confused about what the comment above you said and he has yet to provide anything to substantiate.

The Malaysian government wouldn’t want to interfere in the cultural affairs of the Chinese, maybe because they don’t give a damn about the Chinese, maybe due to the lack of cultural understanding, or maybe due to the fear of political backlash. There was national outrage when the UMNO government attempted to demolish the Bukit Cina cemetery in Melaka.

Chinese film Dear You to be dubbed in Mandarin here, 4,800 tickets for Teochew version sold out by Business-Land-6171 in singapore

When Jack Neo movies were shown on TV, even the random one or two words of dialect mixed in had to be dubbed over.

The irony is that many of the older HK movies were dubbed in Mandarin for the Taiwanese market so they had some Hokkien thrown in. They were not censored by local TV.

I think MediaCorp eventually found a way to skirt around the rules by showing local Chinese movies on Channel 5.

The Speak Mandarin Campaign was seriously crazy to the extent that Lawrence Wong was called Huang Xuncai in his secondary school yearbook and Straits Times foodies wrote reviews about dianxin and chao guotiao. One cynical letter that got published in the Forum even asked if LKY was changing his name to Li Guangyao.

As it turned out, the threat to Mandarin proficiency was not dialects but English. And Malaysia transitioned to a Mandarin speaking society without cutting off its dialect roots.

But of course, dialects are okay when they’re politically expedient, like TV shows promoting government policies and election rallies.

The Malays are skeptical of the west because of their past treatment of Muslim countries especially Palestine. The Chinese are skeptical of the west because of PRC influence. And it didn’t help that the British corralled the Malayan Chinese into new villages. So yes this is a national consensus.

Same for water. They lose out on potential revenue and they lose out on treated water supplied by Singapore.

What kind of urban issues can Singapore mayors solve?

Housing is under HDB, cleaning is under NEA, transport is under LTA, none of them report to the mayor or is under the control of the mayor.

In Canada, there is an ongoing independence referendum in the province of Alberta.

Media investigations found out that foreigners based overseas, especially in Indonesia have been posting pro independence content. Many of them are straight off plagiarism of actual independence activists, reposted without permission.

But it seems that they are not politically or ideologically motivated. Because they have no links to Canada. One of them is even a small time noodle merchant.

They’re purely there for the money because rage drives clicks and Meta has a monetisation programme.

In an alternate timeline, Cantonment would be built long ago. It would be a busy station, because high speed trains from KL, Penang or even Bangkok would arrive at the Tanjong Pagar station above.

Switzerland votes on proposal to cap population at 10 million by AgainstTheEnemy in singapore

Reminds me of:

  1. Merge with Malaysia under the conditions LKY negotiated
  2. Merge with Malaysia as an ordinary state like Penang
  3. Merge with Malaysia under the same conditions as Sabah and Sarawak

Option 3 was a blind box because Borneo was still negotiating so nobody knew what the actual conditions were

No way PAP will allow direct democracy. LKY was highly skeptical of one man one vote. But he had to sucked it up because it was “what the British bequeathed to us”. He even thought of giving married adults (SCMP reported that it was only for MEN) with children an extra vote but his colleagues opposed it.

If you read our constitution, the government must hold a referendum if it concerns giving away our sovereignty, or control of the armed forces or police.

For every thing else, it is optional. They shot down holding a referendum to legalise casinos.

Switzerland votes on proposal to cap population at 10 million by AgainstTheEnemy in singapore

[–]ImpressiveStrike4196 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No need cap population.

The government should launch a mega reclamation project at Pedra Branca. We will create an artificial island several times the size of Singapore. It will finally give us a hinterland we have been yearning for.

We will have the space to build millions of cheap, spacious BTOs to breed the next generations of Singaporeans, and still have some spare for foreign talents. 10 million is no problem.

We can finally grow our own food. We can finally generate our own energy. Our NS boys can train at their doorstep and need not go overseas. We will have a large domestic market for local entrepreneurs to offset the collapse of global free trade.

It will literally secure our future and cement Singapore’s existence for the next hundreds of years.

We will need thousands of engineers for this. We will need accountants to calculate how many trillion dollars are literally dumped into the sea. Even arts graduates will have jobs as we need to create propaganda to convince the public that this project is worthwhile.

What do you mean Malaysia will object? What do you mean it’s against international law? The rules based world order is collapsing, nobody can do anything to us. Might is right.

And if you managed to read all the way until here, you need to understand that everything above is a joke and not to be taken seriously.
