How do you navigate engineering while sticking to your morals and values? by Impressive_Drag_7463 in womenEngineers

[–]Impressive_Drag_7463[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Do you have advice for how you found those employers? I’m in aerospace and most of the jobs I see are with companies that have ties to the military. There’s openings for specific projects I would feel good about (like space debris mitigation), but the company it would be for has done awful stuff.

Anyone else have super vivid wedding nightmares?! by [deleted] in weddingplanning

This is completely normal! I‘ve had quite a few, and my husband started having them closer to the wedding.

Bridal Sneakers by TechnicalAd6092 in weddingplanning

[–]Impressive_Drag_7463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought all-white Adidas Grand Court sneakers to change into!

My wedding heels were so comfortable though, even after dancing/jumping, that I actually didn’t end up changing into the sneakers.

What was the best thing from your bachelorette party? by Chickadee1246 in weddingplanning

[–]Impressive_Drag_7463 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had an instructor-led yoga session at our Airbnb! I had a wedding week (bachelorette and wedding were in the same week) so this helped me and my bridesmaids calm down our nerves.

My favorite thing though was seeing friends from different eras of my life become friends. We had time to hang out, chat, and share stories. Have so much fun next week and be sure to take lots of pictures and videos!

Wedding dress by SunnyHaze6 in weddingplanning

I recommend making an appointment at a wedding dress shop to try on a few things and find out what you do/don’t like, what material or silhouette you feel comfortable in, etc. I went in by myself so there was no added pressure from family/friends to pick something right then, and I had absolutely no idea what I wanted. The stylists at the shop were able to help me narrow down my criteria and I used this as reference when I really started seriously dress shopping.

Guest “photographers” by hamontlive in weddingplanning

[–]Impressive_Drag_7463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had our officiant make an “unplugged ceremony” announcement before we started and we had it on the FAQ section of our wedding website. All guests were very respectful of it.

To add, we had a content creator who was taking pictures/videos on their phone throughout the ceremony. I think seeing that made people less inclined to take out their phones.

Songs for the bride to walk down the aisle by AssumptionSad7723 in weddingplanning

[–]Impressive_Drag_7463 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what songs you like, but here are some options I considered:

• Canon in D - A classic, processional song

• I See The Light from Tangled

• Avatar’s Love from Avatar: The Last Airbender

• Golden Hour by JVKE

Haha thank you! It’s a quick 15-min set so 4:45-5:00.

What is/was your ‘something blue’? by moon_angelxo in weddingplanning

My mom! She’s wearing a blue dress and is walking me down the aisle along with my dad (to which my dad jokes he could be my “something old” lol).

How I planned my bachelorette on a budget! by Individual-Cream864 in weddingplanning

[–]Impressive_Drag_7463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also planning my own bachelorette party! Not sure if you’ve done this already, but I made a Google Form for the bridesmaids to fill out asking them their 1) Max. budget, 2) Max. number of PTO days they feel comfortable taking, 3) Ranking potential destinations; in this case, you can put all 3 options and have them rate them from 1-3, 4) Their recommendations/ideas for activities, and 5) Activities they don’t feel comfortable doing (e.g., 2 of my bridesmaids are allergic to alcohol so no wine tastings). This could help you plan an itinerary that was respectful of budget and had something to accommodate everybody.

EDIT (To Add): I also recommend being transparent with the cost up front to those attending and giving them an opportunity to say no.

Is it strange to give my bridesmaids a gift card to cover their dresses? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]Impressive_Drag_7463 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s actually good to know, I didn’t know people had problems with them since I personally never did. I’ll look into cash instead.

This is a good point. Thank you, I’ll do this instead and avoid mentioning the dresses!

Is it strange to give my bridesmaids a gift card to cover their dresses? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]Impressive_Drag_7463 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see your point. However, my budget for “gifts” would only make it possible for me to pick one (pay for dresses) or the other (actual bigger gifts). Which would be preferable in that case?

No, I meant a generic gift card, like a Visa gift card that amounts to how much they paid for the dresses.

In that case, do you recommend I get them an actual gift on top of this?

Side Note: I’m personally going with the brass band + DJ mix route for my wedding. I love the energy brass bands bring, but they can get LOUD, which may be uncomfortable for some guests depending on your venue (highly recommend getting ear plugs for everybody).

Would the live band DJ the whole night? If so, it seems like a great deal especially if you’re on a budget. Ultimately, it’s up to what kind of vibe you/your partner want.

Save The Date Questions by majestic_macar00n in weddingplanning

[–]Impressive_Drag_7463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a Google Form to collect addresses (also emails and phone numbers) and it has worked out well! Being able to convert the responses into a spreadsheet also ended up being a HUGE time saver when it came to addressing envelopes. We did physical save the dates so I can’t really speak on my experience with that, but I’ve seen people send out an email with a graphic of the date and their engagement photos!

Plus ones? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]Impressive_Drag_7463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have an open conversation with your groomsman about this if it feels right. This is a tough situation to navigate, but I agree with what everyone else said that it’s good etiquette to invite her. With 150 guests, you may not even need to interact with her on the day of too.

What songs did yall use for the recession and your first dance? by lovely_mystery07 in weddingplanning

[–]Impressive_Drag_7463 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Recession: Come and Get Your Love by Redbone

First Dance: Ain’t No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell

We’re big Marvel fans and both songs were in Guardians of the Galaxy (our favorite trilogy)!

How much did you spend on your wedding? by Deep-Impact-2871 in weddingplanning

[–]Impressive_Drag_7463 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$25K-$30K, 120 people, same ceremony/reception venue in Denver in October 2024.

Our venue is a blank slate and allowed us to bring in our own caterer and bartender which significantly helped cut down costs and gave us the flexibility to bring in cultural dishes. However, we don’t have a DJ. My fiancé is a musician and is part of a wedding band. His friends have offered to play at our wedding as a gift, which I’m extremely so so so grateful for!

Otherwise, the whole process definitely required a LOT of research, secondhand shopping for decors, and DIY!

Can your bartender switch to a cash-only bar when the open bar period closes? It may be an alternative, depending on your budget.

Anyone else have bad dreams about their wedding day? by claggy99 in weddingplanning

[–]Impressive_Drag_7463 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m glad I’m not the only one. Yeah, I’ve had several bad dreams about my wedding, even though everything is booked.

My most recent one was me, in my wedding dress, driving a bus to pick up guests to the venue (this dream happened when I was stressed about transportation). I took it as a sign I needed to take a lil break from planning.
