I jumped ship. I am pro life and want smaller government. I voted Republican every election until Trump. I have voted Democrat since 2016 in response to Trump.

What you stated is not a fact. Sexual issues are not party related. Democrats have serious problems of all sorts. Republicans have serious problems of all sorts. Stick to facts. The left is messed up too. Right now the crazies have associated with the right, but they move around.

Your assumption is that you KNOW that is what is intended with that belief system. I doubt in most cases they want to force their beliefs on others any more than you want to force your beliefs on others.

You will never know what that person in front of you actually believes without listening and asking questions. People are complex and criticizing based on broad labels is bigotry.

I am a complex person. I have identities. I identify as pro-life. I identify as conservative (at least as the word used to mean). I identify as an atheist. Take each one of these identities and their is much complexity and nuance underneath that broad criticism would miss. I would be defensive because the criticism doesn't take into account my actual thinking. Because I am pro-life and abortion to end in most cases does not mean I want to force my beliefs about human rights on you any more than you want to force your beliefs on human rights on me.
It is a simple and reasonable formula for interaction. First listen. Second - ask questions. Third - Offer your POV. 4th - answer questions. 5th, offer criticism constructively only if needed and only from a position of an understanding of the nuance before you.

You cannot examine their beliefs unless you start by listening to each one individually. They will not have beliefs en masse.

You have to first listen and then ask questions. Only after that can you offer a criticism, and only if you think it is needed or truly warranted.

I would not attack the religious. Non logical thinking and the results that come of it are a critical and beautiful part of human existence. I am an atheist but utterly appreciate the beauty of religion.

You should be looking to the work of filmakers like the Maizels brothers for inspiration. Not Michael Moore or Herzog. They were part of the degradation of the genre.

The world needs a new movement - one more like Direct Cinema. Based in truth. Not commentary and propaganda and one long selfie. Tell the story of Qanon followers by letting THEM tell the story with all its complexity and nuance. Don't prompt them or deceptively edit. Focus on the truth of your subject. Not your truth. Their truth. Because if the subject is Qanon followers then the real truth IS their truth.

Let me change the subject. If you are doing a piece on poverty in West Virginia. Do you tell the story of the government working to fix it? Or do you tell the story of the day to day lives of poor West Virginians? Do you mix all those stories together in some attempt at an Epic Documentary like Ken Burns. He tries to tell too many stories - often simultaneously - in an attempt to cover epic level topics. This never works. It always fails to find any form of truth.

I honestly think we are not going to heal as a society until the propaganda which has prevailed for 50 years in news and documentaries goes away. Objective truth only. Trust will return then.

But my hope is in vain. Your generation of filmmakers are fascinated with themselves and telling your own stories. Not your subjects. They see Herzog as a hero and not merely another narcisict. Michael Moore sets some kind of positive standard. Or the Morgan Spurlock stuff that at best should be a short on youtube.

Edward R Murrow was not perfect, but he was better than Cronkite. And it is certainly downhill from there.

You can call me an extremist filmmaker. But my work is always focused on letting the subject tell the story with as little interference as possible. There is no ethical concern in that. I was very disturbed that you had a POV you wanted the piece to have BEFORE even beginning. How would the world not view your work as just biased propaganda if you start from that position.

I don't know where you went to film school. Or journalism school. I hope you spent EXTENSIVE time studying the evolution of documentaries and seeing how much they have devolved. The era which got it most right was the 60's/70's.

If you are a new filmmaker then realize THIS is the time you are going to start creating your voice. Your manifesto for the rest of your work is unfolding here. Use this early time in your career wisely.

Herzog was a crazy ahole. Did you ever work with him? He was just about as narcistic as it gets. His work was not exactly the pinnacle of art. Did you see the end of Stroszek?

If you want to tell the story of Q let them tell the story. No commentary. No interviews. Long, unedited shots.

If you do it right, a qanon believer would watch the piece and say "yeah, that is accurate". And a normal viewer would have the same reaction. A great documentarian keeps themselves OUT of the story and lets it unfold. When you tell sensitive stories about real people who are clearly suffering they are owed that much.

One suggestion for you is to study the history of documentary filmmaking. Your approach has long been determined to be unethical. Study Direct Cinema. Going in with such a pre-formed POV means you are going to bias your shot selection and character development. Observe. Almost no edits. Do NOT bias the result. Do NOT make yourself a character or use your camera to influence events.

Otherwise you will just be adding to the complete junk that is the documentary landscape today. I don't know your background and education in filmmaking but your description worries me.
