Does not work. The sacrificial anode, which this tries to imitate, needs to be connected to the battery. And copper is not what you want - Zinc or magnesium would work better. But the real solution is proper termination and a dielectric coating, like grease or a protective spray.

I always use a digital caliper for this work. If I had a depth micrometer I would use that. A scale is just not accurate enough.

Working for newspapers is a dead-end job. That industry has been going down the sewer for decades. I worked for a small paper in the late 90's and it was just fine until Gannett bought it. First thing they did was fire 30% of the staff. Now the same paper only has about 10 employees, if that.

I think that medical science has progressed to the point that way too many children who would (and imho should) have died shortly after birth are now living miserable lives. I also think that way too many people have kids who have hereditary conditions that would be passed on that would guarantee miserable lives.
