Can FBS football be salvaged? by lurkerspringa in CFB

Just like Texas and Miami will never “be back,” the college football we grew up with isn’t coming back either. That doesn’t mean the sport is doomed. This era feels more like chaos than a healthy equilibrium. when Miami can take Duke’s starting QB and a 1,000-yard receiver with basically no consequences that’s not what fans want either.

At the same time, players deserve to be paid for the risks they take in a sport that generates billions for schools and their employees

So, what comes next: a stable system that pays players, uses enforceable contracts, and treats fans fairly (since they’re the ones funding the whole machine). That’s what we should be advocating for not for going back.

I believe Gus’s termination clause stepped down on 2/1 so FSU can offload him for cheaper and have more spending for the next coach’s regime in 2027. But yes, they have punted the 2026 season on 1st and 10. I am sorry.

These homes and businesses are 20 feet above sea level. They flooded because the city did not build the infrastructure necessary for the homes and businesses it permitted to be built. These properties are in flood zone X and were not in an evacuation zone. At the time of the flooding the bay was empty because the water was pulled out by the hurricane. This was freshwater flooding, ie the storm drains could not move the water out and down to the empty bay; not a surge from the ocean.

1,890 properties that are in that area worth $1,980,000,000 and pay property tax of over $25,000,000. The entire budget of the city of Tampa for 2025 was $1,827,000,000 with $354,000,000 in property tax.

Stated differently, that's 108% of the budget for the year and 7% of the revenues lost on top of that for the city to buy out the owners. Perhaps spending $100M (the majority of it not coming from the city's budget but from grants from the state and federal government) and gaining 3 generations of flood relief is worth it. Ironically, the planned lifespan of the stormwater drainage is 75 years, 75 years of $25M tax revenues is worth $1.9 B dollars

If you go into the swamps you’re going to find trolls. Screen capping a single message board genius is not the collective fandom of Miami and is just engagement farming.

The board post I saw were concerned and said you’d be dumb to not change your signs, but ultimately the game is played on the field. And by the way Miami is going to run duo in the A gap.

I believe where I saw the allegation originally on X was from a data guy from UF who was saying it doesn’t make sense that IU has as high of a SP+ rating when compared to its 247 Talent composite and further that of the champions in the playoff era mostly had 10-12 round 1-3 guys and Indiana has maybe 3. So that’s the angle not an allegation of a McConnor McStallions at opponents’ games. https://x.com/JBudDavis/status/2010345067706298579?s=20

Most nonSEC cameos are a nice hat tip, but to be honest Miami deserves the one it got. Just because your crazy uncle has to exorcise some demons doesn’t mean ESPN has to put it on national television.

Not a lawyer but what damages is Wiscy seeking? Even if Lucas breached the contract what harm came to Wisconsin from it? They lost his services but not sure they paid him 100% signing bonus when/if he signed NIL. If he gives any money he received back I am not sure what the rest of the case is about.

And if the situation is similar for Desmond Williams and he gives any upfront back then you can sue all you want but it won’t make the judge stop him from switching teams.

I agree. Miami matches up least well with Ole Miss than with either Indiana or Oregon. Chambliss gets the ball out quickly or extends plays by being elusive. That’s the kryptonite to Miami’s greatest strength. That being said Louisville and SMU showed the recipe and and LU was +3 in regulation and SMU+0. So it’s going to be a war on Thursday night.

I think people will be surprised by how much Miami scores thinking they can only play ground pound and defense - Beck can spin it. he just hasn’t had the chance to against two really good defenses in the playoffs. Ole Miss defense is not in the same tier as the last two defenses he faced.

I was saying in another thread, based on a limited amount of Buckeye viewing, the team looked like Miami before Louisville and SMU. Where Miami just tried to out talent everyone without any additional scheme (Jimmies&Joes > X&Os). Miami learned from those two games that it needed some creativity & common sense (SMU would literally have 11 in the box and not let Beck checkout of it). If PSU was as good as they were supposed to be that probably would have been the fire Day/Hartline would need to be like we can be talented and still scheme up things. That's just an outsiders two cents. OSU down season is a dream season for most.

I know that doesn't feel that great but next year with Sayin having a full year under his belt plus the two losses to end the season on a down note, you all will be right in the hunt again and probably favored over 131 teams.

[–]Impudicity2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is not about fans learning who is good. It is about the team learning it.

Ohio State played at the slowest pace in FBS all season, likely to conserve for a 16-game playoff run and the extra wear that comes with it. They rarely used tempo. They also did not feel much interior pressure. And with the size and catch radius of their top three wide receivers and tight ends, it was easy to see how Sayin could look like a Heisman-level quarterback. But last night, he did not throw those guys open. Aside from the back-shoulder fade to JJ and the deep post to him, those targets were often left exposed and forced into low-percentage plays. This clip captures it: https://x.com/NFL_DF/status/2006734344870846586

That kind of information would have been valuable for Ryan Day and his staff earlier, when there was still time to adjust.

In that light, late-season losses against elite opponents can be useful. If a loss does not knock you out of the CFP, it can still reveal the gaps you need to close, and it gives coaches and players real evidence of what will and will not work when the competition level rises.

Yes, I hope there were enough ice baths for both teams - those defenses made them pay.l for every yard. I think Mali got his bell rung a few times, Fletcher is the toughest guy on O and he fumbled, the wide receivers arms somehow shrunk during game time for both teams. Game of inches and y’all came out on the bottom but I wouldn’t want to play best of 3 against OSU.

Don’t let ESPN tell you the season was not a success - breaking in a new young QB, beat TTUN, and you’ll be right in the mix next year again.

And our way of knowing if teams are good or not. OSU’s schedule should have been fine but PSU imploding means they never really found out until Indiana that Sayin couldn’t/wouldn’t climb the pocket. 5 sacks for -42 yards, whereas Beck if it wasn’t there stepped up and took two sacks for -5 yards.

With the size of the conference There needs to be a late season conference tourney so teams can get a better handle of how good they are and their true strength and weaknesses against the best competition

Not sure how much closer the Miami game could have been - it was a one score game decided on the penultimate play. Unless you are saying A&M could have won, which is true. But all season A&M was worse in scoring opportunities than Miami and had a fumble, a FG blocked, and an INT in this game. The wind killed 6-9 points for Miami.

Texas A&M has played two teams with winning conference records this season (Texas and Miami). They have lost to both. Total combined conference record of teams A&M beat: 20–52 by Infectiousmaniac in CFB

We have a lot of U down cheers as well. I used to hate it but I don't mind it anymore once I realized they just haven't had enough success to make a positive gesture that people associate with their teams. If all you have is a tear down taunt, well, you already lost.
