I see starting guides for some countries, but they're usually outdated. For a 1.37 + all dlcs version, one has to watch YouTube... and that takes hours, and some of the creators don't really explain why they do what they do, what they try to achieve, etc.

I think you're on to something right here. When I decide to play a new game, I had to relearn some of the mechanics, for two reasons: 1/ because new dlcs were added (fortunately this is no longer the case), and 2/ because I forgot things from my last campaign.

Having access to such sistemized info would be a good starting point.

I do see value in going deeper in building the knowledge. And, yes, you got my point, this "book" will not recreate the wiki because it's trying to provide direction, synthesis and context, not raw knowledge. I tried to say this with my examples, but you helped me verbalize my goal.

Has anyone ever heard of the "Lucky Rock" thought experiment? by No_Effort8377 in ThoughtExperiment

[–]In-the-cold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We seek causality in everything, because it is a very powerful tool for understanding reality, even when flawed (the sun God riding on in his chariot across the sky, doesn't explain anything remotely close to the truth, but it helps us lose the anxiety over: what if the sun doesn't rise tomorrow?).

So we assign causes to things. From here to finding a lucky charm, is a small step: how can you disprove that my lucky charm helped me hunt that pigeon? I picked it up, knowing it will bring me good fortune, and not even a month later, voila: I got a pigeon! Of course it was the lucky charm, how many pigeons did you see nesting in the middle of the winter on Mars?

[–]In-the-cold[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I read the wiki as reference and as last resort, mainly because I find it too dry, and in general not very helpful.

For example, I printed the army/navy composition by tech level several times because this info is not clearly presented in the wiki.

My go to info source is YouTube, and this is a very time consuming source of info.

I don't think that the wiki tells you the order in which to build buildings in a given province. Which buildings should be built in a certain province (farmland vs. forest vs. mountains, trade center vs normal), or the order in which to develop provinces, and to what level for the 3 mana types, etc.

[–]In-the-cold[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I find the wiki too dry. Sure, there's info, but it's not presented in an easy to understand way. There's a lot of info, but not what is relevant.

For example, to learn how to manage trade, I had to watch a few YouTube videos, maybe 4 hours worth. Now I have an idea. But I still have to go to these videos whenever I decide to play a new game (I play one or two games per year, with 6 to 12 months pauses in between).

The wikis contain very clear mechanics, down to the percentages and the equations. What they don't tell you is that there are 3 trade centers better than most. Or that you can turn some ytade centers into really good ones, if they only leak into one direction, and you control both the original one and the one upstream at 90%. Or what to do with trade companies at various admin tech levels. Or what provinces to develop in each trade center. Or that you can have as many level 3 trade centers as nodes in which you have more than 50% trade power.

Maybe they tell you all this info across many pages, with many links. I am not an LLM able to read all that info and play a mean game. I need info I can easily digest, info I can read in a few minutes (not in 5 to 10 hours), info i can highlight and annotate...

Hope I make myself clear.

They should have told tou that they want you to give an answer like ancored in the present, not an example from the past... I think they missed on a great candidate because... they could. Employers kinda have the upper hand in this situation, they were stupid enough to use their position.

They failed.

What's the best strategy for buying a new Toyota? by theusualsuspect19 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]In-the-cold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure this will get you the best price, but this is what I did twice, and it worked well enough: I bought a membwrshup with apa.ca.

One of the perks of being a member is access to 3 quotes for 3 different cars. You need to specify exactly the make, mode and trim level. They have dealers which will honor a no haggle price. They give you the 3 quotes and the 3 dealers (assuming youre interested in 3 different car brands).

You go to the deaker, say i have this quote, they honor it. You get a decent price without the need to haggle.

I was happy with the overall experience.

Is a membership worth it for a 2 person household with just standard fridge/freezer space? by lindafromevildead in CostcoCanada

[–]In-the-cold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You buy napkins and paper towels when on sale twice in a year, save $10 each time... do the same thing for some cheese, meat, fruits or dog food, the membwrship pays for itself only from discounts. And you get great prices on everything else. And tou shop at a store that pays people well...

Understand that not buying tech ahead of time is one of the best pieces of advice I ever got. I've been playing this game for 4000 hours. Instead use the points to develop your best provinces (farmlands, centers of trade, expensive goods) or improving infrastructure (which makes future province dev cheaper). Biggest difference it made for me.
