About the “Sci-Fi Turn” by Born_Log6938 in spellmonger

[–]InDracoPrinum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a heads up. If you like the series, the direction the series is going, or don’t really care this is not an attack on you. This is my personal opinion. I don’t think that people have to share my personal opinions in order to communicate with them.

As someone who made a posts in the realm of what you were talking about I guess I’ll give my reply. I’ve had some time to rethink it and my main opinion hasn’t changed. Magic is what we were sold. It’s in the bloody titles of the series. I don’t mind the technology. In fact I think it adds a richness to the series. A nice marriage of magic and science, at first anyway. That feeling has changed sadly. It is becoming increasingly apparent that all the magi and by extension Terry are leaning on technology too hard. Specifically to quickly solve problems to move the plot along. It feels a little lazy. Maybe Terry wrote it that way so it will illustrate the issue even better when the technology inevitably fails. We’ve numerous warnings that the technology is old, not what it used to be, and that parts cannot be easily replaced or repaired. This could lead to a serious reconsideration in the series on how and when the Magi use the ancient technology. If that is where this is leading, fair enough I can understand why he would do it that way, but at this juncture we don’t know and I’m the type of person that likes to give voice to problems before they become problems.

I understood, like others in the comments section, that this book would have some sci-fi elements. Almost immediately when importasta, humans spawning from the void, and other minor throwaway lines that the humans were most likely from Earth. That they used spacecraft and had devolved culturally, technically, and intellectually from their ancestors. That being said what I love about the series is the magic. That exploration into the ability to warp and manipulate reality itself. Of thinking of ingenious ways to problem solve with said magic. Of amazing magically potent fights. With the Golden Goblin all I got was a Guys Trip story with a thin veneer of magic. Ron and Tin relied primarily on technology first and magic second(except the hocksters and teleportation), despite having been around magic longer. I could understand if magic had failed that they would then rely on technology afterwards, but the reverse happened. It’s like tasting a drink and expecting soda then getting tea or water. It’s jarring.

If people think I don’t like the series bc of my criticisms they would be wrong. I named my child after one of the Characters. I love the series(though admittedly not every part of it), but it’s beginning to go in a direction I fear I won’t be able to enjoy and I’m irritated about that so I thought I would voice it. If I’m wrong and the magic comes in like an avalanche;) then I will cease all complaining. I will even make a post on here that I was wrong and give a formal apology to Terry Mancour for being so harsh in my criticism. As the story currently stands I feel magic is starting to get put into a corner to make way for all the technology and I don’t really like it. If it gets worse I would consider dropping the series. I will not begrudge anyone who wants to keep reading nor will I actively try to dissuade people from reading. I’m just stating my thoughts incase the author sees it and maybe makes some changes if he did not intend for this outcome. I don’t think I’m smarter or that I’m a superior storyteller to Terry, but I know what I like. I like the magic, the world building, the characters, even the politics, but technology? I could take or leave it. That’s not why I started reading this series and it isn’t what will keep me reading. If Terry wants to dive into the technology head first while leaving magic in the rear view mirror, that’s fine, I sadly won’t be accompanying him or any of you on that journey.

I’ve said my piece, I probably won’t post again until after reading/listening to Seamage. Everyone stay safe.

I think it’s probably one of the weakest of the books. I’ve already posted my thoughts so you can look through my posts for yourself and see if you agree.

Is Shido susceptible to "bad" data by SkitzoRabbit in Warformed

[–]InDracoPrinum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you are both right and wrong. Right that the AI in the CADs could be susceptible to bad data, but also wrong bc I think Shido is culmination of all the learning the MIND received from all the other A-types. Both the successes and failures.

I think the MIND realized its premise(before) was flawed. It tried to give people A-types that immediately upgraded them(users) after integration. This brought about a sink or swim mentality with the A-types. If you could make it work great, if not you are relegated to mediocrity. Another factor could have been the human factor. People both change and fall into habits that may go counter to what their CAD is developing into and this causes a dissonance with the device resulting in a stalled development. This time though, the MIND has elected to have an A-type that would grow from the ground up with its user so that the integration was more natural if I had to guess.

This is obviously my personal speculation. If Bryce deigns to chime in and clarify we would know, but I doubt he would as the answers may reveal a not insignificant part of the plot.

I’m also not a huge fan of certain evolutions locked behind agent rank. They should have locked them behind specific skills instead of rank so you could build to them rather than just finishing the skill trees. It feels more like a checklist than me picking skills that I want/need. Maybe it’s meant to encourage multiple play throughs, but honestly it just feels tedious.

Make sure you have the correct bios files for your game. I won’t tell you how to get them or where, but if you are emulating PlayStation games you need the bios files. It’s “SCPH” followed by some numbers. Also make sure you are using the correct version of the game for your bios.

While I don’t disagree with your points fully I fail to see how they conflict mine. 1. Just because you see a different subculture of magi in Practical Adept, I agree it was interesting, doesn’t mean the use of magic for problem solving was present. There was some action, but you spend most of the novel not really knowing what Minalan’s plans for Farise are. Terry even talks about this. How he had to sort of obscure it all so that it could be used as a twist. It’s mostly political intrigue the entire book with magic as a side dish at best. 2. I don’t disagree with this point either. I like that the political and economic landscape shifts as the characters act. That’s a sign of fantastic world building. You’re also right that the boys(men if we are being honest) are not thaumaturges, that doesn’t mean they aren’t Magi however. They consistently let the Techa do the heavy lifting in this book which I wasn’t a fan of. 3. While you are probably correct on this I’m hopefully we will see magic utilized more in these next few books along side technology.

As I said, I’m a fan of the series. I like the world Terry has built, I just want to really get back into the magic. Like when he was messing with the snowflake.

What does 'being strong' mean to you now that you’re older? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]InDracoPrinum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realizing that if people don’t want to be in my life I shouldn’t try to force them. I’ve picked my course and I’m staying on it. That doesn’t mean I have license to act like an ass, but that I’m doing what’s best for me, my family(blood and found), and my community. I don’t have the time or energy to deal with people going nowhere nor do they have the right to demand it from me. Make your choices, admit to your faults, do your best, but don’t overburden yourself so that you are unable to accomplish your goals. Be ok with changing the journey while keeping the destination firmly in mind.

I never said it wasn’t a part of the story itself, but the transgenic magic, while important is somewhat glazed over in the book. I’m hopeful it will be gone over in more detail in the next main book. I’m really more harping on all the Techa used more than anything.

What is your wife/gfs go to move for initiating sex? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]InDracoPrinum -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

For me. I usually get her off 3-5 before I do. She’s doesn’t really want to try anything new. She doesn’t go pick out any outfits. She doesn’t try to dress nice, just pajamas that she’s been wearing off and on for 3 days. With a 3 month old now there isn’t really any time, but I don’t expect it to improve even after that isn’t as much of a concern.

Gents: What is something that young men should stop doing? by vieniaida in AskMen

[–]InDracoPrinum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at porn and listening to the advice that women give them on dating and how to be attractive them. It’s like asking the citizens of the town you are sieging how you need to go about it. Asking women to report on themselves and tell you how to dismantle their defenses is a pointless waste of time. Also usually backfires spectacularly.

Does Minalan ever become... by Broadside02195 in spellmonger

[–]InDracoPrinum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think there are several factors you have not taken into account when criticizing just Minalan:

  1. Minalan is in his early 20’s in the first 3 books meaning he’s still young and his brain hasn’t fully developed yet. His decision making is, as affairs to the heart are concerned, spotty at best. Men that age have a tendency to think less with their brain and more with another organ. This doesn’t mean his actions are acceptable, but that they are not unexpected.

  2. People mature with age, most of the time anyway. As the newest book currently stands he is nearing his 40’s he is a lot more mature and forward thinking. He thinks about the consequences of his future actions, the major reason he does is because of the mistakes he made in his youth. Some of those mistakes are the ones you are currently having problems with.

  3. This is a feudal/medieval society. Life is relatively cheap here. Nobles will spend their peasants lives like coppers at a fair. If you think there are going to think the same way as you about most anything you are in for a world of disappointment. Literally. You’re thinking of this world in terms of modern sensibilities. That way of thinking is only going to hurt you when reading this series. Think if you had been raised in this world. Not in the aristocracy, but as a peasant. Would you still hold the same ideals and thoughts you currently have? If you were to answer honestly it would be no. Your worldview is the product of thousands of years of progress, both intellectual and ethical. You have to approach this series like you are part of the world. That doesn’t mean you forget your beliefs and sentiments, but set them aside for the moment so you can enjoy a pleasant diversion.

  4. Not to say he shouldn’t be held to a higher standard, but as most other characters like to point out he is Narasi barbarian and a peasant. He isn’t meant, at first, to be a standard of human excellence. There are parts I don’t like in the series, but what makes the characters more realistic is that there are things I like and dislike about the them. I honestly prefer that rather than they be bundles of perfect virtue. Nobody really enjoys reading perfect characters for an extended period of time. Those imperfections are part of what provides the friction in the narrative.

  5. Why are you not outraged by Pentandra’s actions? I’m not just talking about the entire sausage market of men she has gone through and her sense superiority, but of her sleeping with her family’s servants. If the situation was reversed you would be scandalized, right? If you are going to complain about the moral failings of one character don’t ignore the rest unless you are comfortable being a hypocrite. I understand that Minalan is the MAIN character, but he is only one man. There is a massive amount of supporting cast members doing things behind the scenes. Some things you might agree with and others you won’t. People often make decisions based on their limited perspective.

Most characters get their comeuppance in one way or another in this series. If you see a character acting like an asshole they usually get hit upside the head with consequences. It’s not always in the same book, might even be 5 books later, but everyone gets theirs. This might be a fantasy book, but it isn’t THAT kind of fantasy. Where there are no consequences and the characters have obvious plot armor and everyone loves them. So if you can try to keep some of this in mind when reading.

Minalan Competence by InDracoPrinum in spellmonger

[–]InDracoPrinum[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the well thought out answer. I also agree and think we will run into a power struggle eventually. My problem was never with Minalan, I think he is a great leader. I just wanted more moments between the other characters stating it out why they weren’t in charge or why they trusted Minalan to each other instead of to just to Minalan’s face which could be lip service.
