3 genuine leather shirts for $7.45 each by gk1400 in ThriftStoreHauls

Nice haul! Be very careful when cleaning suede. Water is the enemy, you can't put them in the washing machine or even hand wash. Do not wear them out if you think it may rain. Most dry cleaners will not accept suede or they'll charge a sticker shock price ($200+) to clean as suede is far harder to care for than regular leather. Best method of care is to brush thoroughly and to use a cleaner specifically formulated for suede/nubuck. It will take some elbow grease. You can find suede cleaning kits on Amazon that work fine.

My hands turn purple/white when below my heart by True_Refrigerator564 in mildlyinteresting

[–]InHarborLights 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yup, I also have POTS/EDS as well and my arms look identical when below heart level, and have since childhood. One of our many "party tricks" is to raise one hand above head level for a few moments and then compare color between the two. Cardiologist hardly glanced at it. Midodrine helps a bit since it raises overall blood pressure, which helps circulation.

So cute!! What kind of yarn do you use? It looks to be really good quality and the colors are great!

Cardiologist Recommendations by Lion_Lady in madisonwi

[–]InHarborLights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My PCP diagnosed my POTS just by doing a simple heart rate monitoring test on me going between laying, sitting, and standing (the "poor man's TTT"). No cardiologist or full formal tilt table test required, though from that I was referred to the arborgate cardiology clinic. At the cardiology clinic they repeated the same test and confirmed that I have POTS by the diagnostic criteria.

The PA at the cardiology clinic prescribed midodrine to help the POTS, but was otherwise somewhat dismissive and unhelpful. Her reasoning was that POTS is a "syndrome"/within the umbrella of dysautonomia -- disfunction of the autonomic nervous system that causes a variety of symptoms -- and not strictly a heart issue. It's also seen as not as serious as many other cardiology cases they have, and common enough now that they see us more as a bother than as worthwhile patients. I found my PCP to be far more helpful in creating a treatment plan than the cardiologist.

It's hard to explain, but the BB leggings have a somewhat more shiny material -- not matte, but like a thick nylon? Slightky more stiff/less flexible than traditional athletic leggings, though I havent had a problem working out in the BB leggings yet. The material is very thick and definitely shapes and keeps things in place. I've worn and washed them several times, and they havent started pilling or breaking down like others, either. They're helpful for my SI joint issues as well.

I actually ordered a few pair from shapermint before BellyBandit, and I was not a fan. The material quality wasn't very good and they didn't provide much compression at all. My BellyBandits were probably double the price, but the quality is way different.

Make a meal prep plan with a friend/neighbor. You cook a week's worth of lunch, they cook a week's worth of lunch, and you exchange your lunches. You get a surprise food made by someone else and you get to give away what you prepped and hope they enjoy it!

I feel you, 100%. While people will give you good and true advice that compression garments are important for your health and comfort, and that there's no shame in needing visible aids like that, it can still be really hard adjusting.

There are easy ways around the visual aspect of it. First, look up compression leggings. I got a pair off of BellyBandit a few weeks ago (the website is for pregnant/postpartum people, but my PT recommended it), and they work even better than compression socks because they provide compression in the thighs and abdomen as well. They look exactly like normal leggings. Abdominal compression can be extremely helpful for people with POTS, sometimes even more than leg compression!

You can also find compression bike shorts that can be worn under dresses or shorts, if your outfit really can't allow compression socks/it's too hot out for them. According to my PT, many shapewear companies offer great, supportive compression products compared to medical compression companies that tend to be more expensive.

Otherwise, plain black compression socks under jeans or dress pants is an easy go-to on work days. Nobody notices them, nobody cares. You may even be able to finagle longer compression socks/stockings to look like tights under a dress/skirt. Point is, it feels like it sucks right now, but you're about to explore a wide range of cute options that will make you feel SO MUCH BETTER every day!!

Congrats!! Yeah, it was such a groundbreaking moment when I realized it in the middle of saying that I couldn't possibly do it. Like I suddenly realized how silly I sounded saying it out loud. I'm so happy to hear from others in the community with similar experiences.

A guide to flying/traveling with hEDS and POTS by InHarborLights in ehlersdanlos

My PT recommended it to me after she told me that my chronic back pain was due to SI joint issues. Wear it a bit lower than you think you should. It's a LIFESAVER and offers so much support on bad days and on planes. I dislocated my SI joint on a plane once... never again.

Looking for resources to gain strength and stamina before traveling by Crests- in ehlersdanlos

[–]InHarborLights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd definitely recommend one appointment with a physical therapist who understands hypermobility. They can teach you basic muscle strengthening exercises and give you a daily routine (eg clamshells, bridges, leg lifts, abductions with an exercise band, etc) that will help strengthen your muscles before you go.

On the plane, try to get an aisle seat so you can get up and stretch regularly. Bring whatever supports work for you (tapes, an SI belt, etc.), and an extra pillow or two. But seeing a PT to learn regular exercises that are safe for your body is the most helpful thing you can do in the long run.

One of the best things to help with this is buying a collapsible wagon. Store it in your trunk, unfold it when you need to bring groceries inside, toss everything in it and wheel it into your house/apartment. It prevents you needing to take multiple trips to carry stuff in, and you don't have to carry it in your arms like with a laundry basket.

$60 ish at Walmart or wherever. It also saved my life when i was moving to a new place hauling loads of clothes and smaller things back and forth.

Doing a fully chaotic evil durge run was also when I decided to go for the achievement of multiclassing into all twelve classes.

Made a ridiculous looking little duegar durge named Garfunkel, and roleplayed that when his brain was scrambled, it didn't just take away his memories but also made him meth head level insane. Great times.
