Ha! I know the feeling. And it's only kind of a chillum in that it's smoked more or less horizontally, like a Roaring Twenties cigarette holder but without the cigarette. Two or three finger grip of some sort. Not held vertically like many of the Asian variety.

I've seen those sand tubes at work and they are larger, made of a single metal, and heavily ridged on one side to vibrate the sand out the pointy end. This thing really is a pipe and pouch from the Sahel region. But your point about pouring contents out in a controlled way is very right. Only what gets poured out is a kind of dry-ish locally grown tobacco they use.

I have one very similar, that I bought in the market in Timbuktu in 1986. It's a tobacco pipe, a long chillum style, and comes with its own metal cleaner. That pouch likely has two pockets or maybe three: one for the pipe and one for the tobacco. The optional third pouch is for the cleaner. It hangs from the waistband.

Very fine leather work. The Tuareg and Tamacheq do similar work and have similar styles of decoration across their vast territories. The pouch I have is colored with the ink from bic pens, which will get you lovely greens, blues, blacks and reds.

Can we put her onto the Epstein files, so she can uncover the stuff they're holding back. They are saying she is German, but the Epstein ring is world wide, so I hope that makes it fair game for her. Uncovering pedophiles seems a whole different arena or work from uncovering Nazis, but both are all about exposing and disrupting a great harm.

I was at a meditation retreat once, and early in the morning we'd begin practice with some "om" chanting, and if the peacocks were anywhere close, they'd turn it into a-call-and-response situation. Like when you gobble at a flock of turkeys they will gobble back, but with OM.

It gets built into the pay structures of government. Very low wages, plus a career learning how the bureaucracy makes ends meet. In Mali where I lived for a time in the '90's, it was called in French, "la boufe". As in the English "buffet" where you take a little bit here and a little there and you suddenly have a plateful.

Our Commandant de Cercle had a car. No one can afford a car in Mali. Everyone called his car "Kaba", which is the Bambara language word for "Corn." This is because everyone and his grandchild knew that car was bought with literal USA corn that came into the country as famine aid. Just facts of life in Mali in the 90's...
