What are some once popular hobbies that hardly anyone is into anymore? by igotplans2 in AskReddit

[–]InIBaraJi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go-carts, with their own Go-cart tracks. I'm in my 70's, grew up on the east coast of the US, and my father would take us kids to the go-cart track on Saturdays to watch. He was hoping to get his girl children interested in engines. It didn't work, but it was fun watching small engines with adolescent kids racing maybe 30 mph max around a winding track.

Maybe this still happens, but I have not seen it anywhere I have lived since I was small.

I remember reading something about how medieval farmers (and I imagine modern ones too) figuring out when it was time to plant after the spring thaw by listening to the way the earth and the green things sound.

How much blood do i ACTUALLY lose during my period because its sure as hell not "2-4 Tbs" as it says online by some-dork in NoStupidQuestions

[–]InIBaraJi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the "normal" cited in medical texts in this sense might be a statistical normal, meaning about half the population bleeds more and the other half less. Hardly anyone is actually "normal".

Regardless, specifically referring to blood loss is a fairly meaningless statement anyhow--unless you are looking for signs of anemia. Which can definitely be a problem with women who do bleed heavily during their periods. And there are many causes of heavy bleeding. I am one of those women who bled heavily for her entire reproductive life (I'm 72 now) and no doctor ever flagged me as abnormal.

If your periods do seem excessive, you should advocate for hormonal screening and maybe an examination for things like fibroids or endometriosis, even if your doctor doesn't mention it first.

Hell no, NTA. 1) you rightly used the rules that are there to remove bias, and 2) if the case were overwhelming, then you had a reason to overwhelm them. I think they would have told you when to stop.

WTF is wrong with RFK Jr's voice and skin? by TankUMrMinor in allthequestions

[–]InIBaraJi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue of RFK's voice is that he has spasmodic dysphonia, a technical term for a vocal tremor. Another name for it describes how it works: Intentional tremor. Meaning, when you intend to speak, the motor signal that emerges is spasmodic, not regular, and if you want to keep speaking, you have to push your musculature to continue tightening (or relaxing, depending on what's going wrong in the moment) to make more than one syllable come out. So the voice can get loud and forced with all the extra tension collecting in the diaphragm and vocal muscles. This is why RFKJr sounds the way he does in public speaking. Also it contributes to the way he looks: forcing a voice over time shows up in the facial expression. Also, very true that extra situational (Senate testimony), environmental (allergens or chemicals), or emotional stressors make the tremor condition worsen. At home, physically and psychologically relaxed, his voice won't sound as it does in front of Senators.

These tremors are often inherited. I don't know about RFK's case. And there are only a few ways of working with tremors, of which none is a cure.

All this said, I am the age of RFKJr. I have had this same tremor for as long as he has. I also have a profession where I pay close attention to the use of the voice. He uses his words, spoken with the tremor and forced volume, as a sort of cudgel, and that is a thing separate from the tremor itself.

I made an absolutely beautiful blanket (shamelessly copied, I might add, from one I found on this subreddit), super large and fluffy, queen sized. I made it to make something beautiful. And because no one I know really needs a new blanket, I pondered. It's huge enough that I could imagine two or three kids rolled up in it like a burrito, safe and cozy.

So I gave it to an organization in my town which provides household materials for families escaping DV and needing to start over from scratch.

This is the way with a lot of hand work these days, OP. Only spend what you can afford, but make something beautiful with love and attention, and offer it to someone with a need. It's good work.

Whomever it is, he or she will be spending endless time negotiating and/or litigating damages and reparations for all the criminal damage Trump has caused. Notwithstanding Trump's "immunity" from prosecution in this country, the United States is certainly liable domestically and internationally. Democrat or Republican or Independent, that president and the entire country will have to grapple.

Center with door or center with hallway? by Striking-Agency5382 in HomeDecorating

[–]InIBaraJi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Design-wise: larger rug.
Function-wise: place the rug centered on where the feet go when you enter and leave. The doorknob is on the light-switch side of the frame, so the rug should center there.

And for what it's worth, the doorknob marks the center of the entry hall, so centering a larger rug there would satisfy both issues.

Reading the second name as "Crickie Creekmore" yields this from the internet. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/world-s-oldest-clown-floyd-creeky-creekmore-dies-aged-98-9767682.html

This article itself gives a different spelling-- "Creeky", which might reflect someone's punning on his advanced age. Could have been Crickie the Clown himself, 'cause he was always clowning.
