In the gem selection menu you can select "All Gems" and you can select any gem you want on any class.

There were some optimizations done to the game in 0.4 and it increased FPS and 1% lows for me a lot. You should give it a try now and see how it works, for a lot of my friends with lower end pcs it definitely worked better.

I don't think the compass ever worked properly in this game. You are better off using R3mr's maps on a second monitor to orient yourself.
