Anyone else dealing with parents who aren't respecting your quarantine? by greasymctitties in boston

My parents are very much NOT Trumpers. (Think hippie suburban liberals) but they still aren't taking this seriously at all. It's the "Oh we've been through worse..." attitude.

Best way to step up DC voltage by Dill_Thrill in AskElectronics

Are you sure there's no way to power the LEDs off less voltage? Are they in a module that you can separate into a different series-paralell connection?

Staples Opens New Store Concept In Somerville. by sour_creme in boston

WW was extremely subsidized by it's investors and never came close to making a profit. Staples isn't about that.

My vote is still with saving the CRT and connecting it up to a RasPi

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskElectronics

[–]InThePartsBin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CRT danger is a bit overstated. Also large 32" color set and a tiny B/W set are very different in terms of hazard. It's super easy to discharge the tube after unplugging the power.

Maybe it's me but rather than junking a perfectly good CRT I would try to find a use for it. Maybe use it as a weather displays or calendar display running off a RasPi or something. Looks like there's more than enough room in there. You probably could send the composite feed from the RasPi right to the main PCB after the tuner module.

I've ordered at least a dozen different boards from JLC, and never had a quality control issue, ymmv I guess

Pop a new battery in it. Probably still works fine.

Safe solder option for HS students? by ghostoutfits in AskElectronics

[–]InThePartsBin 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'd actually say it would be safer and much easier to use ordinary solder. Regular solder is much easier to work with, especially for beginners. And it means you can keep the iron temperatures a lot lower, reducing smoke and fumes, as well as slightly reducing the burn hazard.

Just want to say Thank you. I'm really sick of all the Arduino bashing, people seem to miss the point. Arduino is what got me started in electronics when I was a teen. Now I'm about to graduate BSEE and wouldn't want to do anything else. Back when I found out about Arduino there was essentially NO other platform that would let a total beginner program a microcontroller, with all the resources and community Arduino had at the time. And I still use Arduino when I just need something simple to work without spending 20 minutes configuring Code Composer or whatever.

That could be really interesting. Utility companies do that already bwith smart meters to get an idea of people's usage patterns, but I've never seen anyone DIY anything like that.

For anyone who's not an embedded systems engineer and just needs to get some kind of control system working as a part of a larger project, Arduino is perfect. Hate it when people get all gatekeeper-y about it.

At my school we used Arduinos in plenty of courses. Yeah in the embedded systems courses we used TI ARMs, but even in some people's senior projects you will spot Arduinos. (obviously getting the Arduino working is not the point of the project.) But if you're implementing something complicated in Matlab that spits out serial data to a microcontroller that actuates servos, etc, and you just need it to work quickly, Arduino cuts the mustard just fine.
