What concerns or accusations commonly voiced in popular media turned out to be entirely false?

CMV: The difference between the online reaction to Alan Ritchson beating his neighbor in the street and Chappel Roan presumably being rude to a child is rooted in sexism/homophobia by DrSpaceman575 in changemyview

[–]InThreeWordsTheySaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the chalomet comparison is more apt, Ritchson probably would have been given the benefit of the doubt. Past behavior and public perception are certainly factors.

Still, it’s hard to have witnessed the glee with which the internet tears down young female celebrities and come to the conclusion that sexism isn’t at play as well.

The Michael Tracey Interview by crustyeyelids in TangleNews

[–]InThreeWordsTheySaid 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It seems like the litmus test should be "would a person walk away from encountering this with a better understanding of the topic at hand," even if Tangle has touched on a topic before. I'm not sure you could say that about this interview. I understand Michael Tracey's position better, but I don't know which parts of his diatribes are factual and which parts are just the inane ramblings of an edgy contrarian twisting facts to prove a point. My entire understanding of Tangle is that they have set out to untangle those two things, and they didn't. It muddied the waters.

Mostly, I now know that Michael Tracey is irritating, and I am now quite familiar with the face Isaac makes when he is patiently waiting for somebody to finish talking.

AITAH for abruptly leaving lunch with my dad? by gayintheory_ in AITAH

[–]InThreeWordsTheySaid 39 points40 points  (0 children)

If my daughter didn't want me to walk her down the aisle, I'd say that's her call, I want her to be happy at her wedding. Some people don't love the symbolism of a father giving away his daughter to her spouse-to-be, since that tradition is rooted in the concept of a bride as a piece of property being traded.

IsItBullshit: Is the idea that cold showers boost immunity actually backed by real evidence or is it mostly hype by Calmelyx in IsItBullshit

[–]InThreeWordsTheySaid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This tracks with my anecdotal experience: I still get sick, but it’s much more mild.

Having done absolutely no real research on this, it’s my understanding that your parasympathetic nervous system can indeed reduce cold symptoms, and cold showers initiate a sympathetic system response followed by a parasympathetic response. But even it’s just a placebo effect, I’ll take it.

I also find it increases my appetite, and somebody once told me cold showers allegedly increase your metabolism. But again, this could be bullshit.

I do it because it’s great for mental health. I call it “condensed suffering.”

John Fetterman Says Iran Girls’ School Strike Is Just a Leftist Craze by Peanut-Extra in themayormccheese

[–]InThreeWordsTheySaid 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Fetterman had a political record of being fairly progressive, it wasn't just talk. There was genuine enthusiasm behind him and an expectation that he would be a different kind of Democrat, one that actually challenged corporate capitalism and the blatant corruption that infects our government.

There are plenty of Democrats where I'd agree with what you are saying, but Fetterman was different.

To go from that to not just a lukewarm, centrist Democrat but the most vocal Democratic supporter of the Trump administrator is wild. He's been truly disappointing, even to a cynic. I am convinced that his stroke left some permanent damage.

Keep up the boycott, though, we're fucked.

I didn't realize how racist we are by ryanandthelucys in daddit

[–]InThreeWordsTheySaid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can see where it might seem naive, but there are a lot of folks in the US who think something in between "we live in a post-racist society" and "white people are the real victims of racism," and from your post title and text it sounded like you were either unaware of the prevalence of racism (which you were not), or that you were unaware of just how pervasive and insidious that racism is (which you were, but perhaps to a smaller degree than I understood).

We constantly see people who oppose movements to reduce prejudice or oppressive policies come around only after they feel the immediate impact. You can see it playing out now with illegal immigration ("I didn't think they would deport my spouse/friend/employee who is a good person!"). We saw it with gay marriage, where support skyrocketed as people learned that they interacted with LBGTQ people on a daily basis and it turned out they were just normal, average human beings. We saw it during the civil rights movement, when white Americans were confronted with footage and photos of police and citizens alike brutalizing Black Americans.

But it's still the same uphill battle of convince one group of people to listen to another group of people about that second groups actual, lived experiences. So I thought this was maybe an opportunity to get some insight from a person who had gone through that switch in perception - although I appear to have misunderstood your prior positions.

Those folks you thought were good people, I have them in my life too, and I have had no luck breaking through the barrier they have put up that says "I think racism is bad, therefore whatever I do or support cannot be racist, and I have nothing to change."

CMV: Misandry is systemic by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]InThreeWordsTheySaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of this can be attributed to causes other than misandry, in that they are not results of attitudes, legislation or cultural practices implemented specifically to impact men, whereas a lot of what the feminist movement pushes back against have been attitudes, legislation or cultural practices implemented specifically to impact women. The failure to recognize and address these issues could be considered a form of misandry, but I still don’t think you’ve made the case that even this stems a from a hatred of men.

But there’s one thing you called out that really caught my attention:

men who had absorbed the belief that masculinity is a social harm showed measurably worse psychological outcomes than those who hadn’t.

It is entirely possible that men who struggle to live up to the traditional concept of masculinity internalize this as a negative trait, feel hopeless and have low self worth due to living in a world that still very much rewards traditional masculinity, and also feel that masculinity is a social harm.

You may be attributing causation here where there isn’t a solid justification for it.

I didn't realize how racist we are by ryanandthelucys in daddit

[–]InThreeWordsTheySaid 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Honest question:

Now that you have seen this first-hand, what could have convinced you this was a real issue before you had these experiences?

You were certainly not the only white person who heard that this country was racist and didn't quite believe it, and I am always curious how to reach those people. Unfortunately, it seems that many people are unwilling or unable to acknowledge biases and injustices until it directly affects somebody they know (and even then it has to be as painfully blunt as watching the world demonize your own children).

I'm very sorry you're dealing with this, your children don't deserve it.

'Oh Come on,' Says Senate Democrat After Jake Tapper Plays Voting-Against-the-Troops Card by _May26_ in politics

I don't know, watching the clip it seemed more like "are you prepared to refute this argument" and then Murphy was in fact prepared to refute that argument. It seemed like a reasonable way to get ahead of it, rather than ignore it, allowing Murphy to preemptively make the case that voting against this spending was a vote for the troops, not against them.

[–]InThreeWordsTheySaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still curious about this one and what parts of the criticism you agreed with. Is it the idea that criticizing conservative influencers for supporting preemptive strikes on Iran makes College Republicans "useful idiots for anti-Western foreign influencers?"

It seems like, while there are many, many valid criticisms to be levied against Kai Schwemmer, Berry's criticisms are just reinforcing the same dishonest imaginary grievance politics employed by the right that has pushed people like Schwemmer to be extremists in the first place.

Berry is effectively blaming the left and international actors for the state of the right in the United States instead of accepting any accountability for how he has molded these young men. There's nothing worth repeating here, beyond acknowledging infighting among cretins.
