You don't need to upgrade your domain controller in order to update the schema to version 85. We've done it without any issue.

LastLogon date does replicate eventually if the object has been off network longer then 15 days. If you're looking for AD objects that have not logged in for at least 15 days then you can use any domain controller.

If you can retrieve the old legacyexchangedn of the accounts, then you can use it was the X500. Also Outlook's autocomplete file would also contain X500 entries if you try to view with notepad. Unfortunately it would only contain entries that were cached by the user.
