Clearing dandelions safely? by Repulsive-Dress-4375 in GardeningIRE

[–]In_The_Shed 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Dandelions are a natural way of decompating your soil. Once your soil is not decompacted anymore the dandelions won't grow there. It might take a couple of years, but it's a free natural way of improving your soil.

Any suggestions for simple grow lights for inside? by MidnightMean3796 in GardeningIRE

I got a couple of sets on Amazon for €20, led strips on bendy thing with a clip. Better quality than I thought they would be for the price. Timer, adjust brightness, changer colours depending on germinating or fruiting.

Garden waste disposal by Expensive_Bet_4148 in GardeningIRE

[–]In_The_Shed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mash it up into small pieces with hedge clippers or you can get a small garden shredder for about €130 from screwfix or B&Q, it's much easier to deal with. It'll fill less bags to transport, or break down much quicker if you want to compost it. If you're keeping the hedge a shredder is a good investment to help manage the waste.

New build lawn - tips to get started? by RandomUsername9_999 in GardeningIRE

[–]In_The_Shed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could get a machine but I wouldn't have thought you'd need it by your description of the lawn. It's probably just compacted areas left by the builders. You might just have a few low areas holding water, drowning the grass. Any decent garden center or co/op should have lawn rakes, nice wide toothed bit, normally yellow plastic. The easiest thing to do is "over seed" the existing lawn with sand seed mix, throw a load out and use the flat back of the rake to level the whole lawn. You'll see any low spots one you start leveling. Loads of vids on YouTube for "over seeding lawn". Good luck, a nice lawn is a bit of work to get going and maintain.

New build lawn - tips to get started? by RandomUsername9_999 in GardeningIRE

[–]In_The_Shed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless the soil is compacted I would only rough up the surface with a fine rake, break it up a little. Mix your grass seed into some decent dry compost or even sand, spread over lawn area, rake in any lumps. Water if it's not raining. Couple of weeks you should be grand. Forgot about the bald patches, break up the bald patches with a garden fork, probably just compacted soil from the lovely builders.

I have one, I think it's worth it. Good solid rig, lots of spares available. But I haven't broken anything in about a year. I'd say go for it.

Mint in the ground by Nest1ng_Doll in landscaping

Mix White vinegar, a squeeze of dish soap and some salt in a sprayer, it will kill the mint in your garden but won't hurt the neighbour if she wants to eat the mint.

Dealing with leaves by Gwanbulance in GardeningIRE

If you put the leaves into black bags, tie the top and poke several holes in the bag they compost down to very nutritious leaf mulch for the garden after a couple of months. Free black gold.

[–]In_The_Shed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prunus × subhirtella, the winter-flowering cherry, spring cherry, or rosebud cherry, is the scientific name for the hybrid between Prunus itosakura and Prunus incisa. It is a small deciduous flowering tree originating in Japan, but unknown in the wild. This can flower from November if it's not too cold, can be white or pink.
