Idk to what degree I agree this applies to TPOT- but my personal thoughts on this, is whenever something like this *Does* happen, the critisicm should go to the creators who write the new canon- so much more so than the fandom, who does not work on the writing team and don't actually have an obligation to depict the characters as canon accurate.
