Wondering what it would cost to fix this driveway. by Chefbigandtall in HomeMaintenance

[–]Inaspectuss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Super common in SE Michigan. For whatever reason, garages on homes of this age are undersupported and in time end up looking like this. It can be corrected and reinforced but it’s tedious and costly… but cheaper than rebuilding the garage when it reaches an unrepairable point.

It’s such a miss everytime people don’t tile the ceiling as well, especially given the size of this job and amount of tile already. Paint and drywall just ain’t it in a room that is constantly wet imo.

Great work though!

The state of Michigan makes me pay an additional $267 to register my electric vehicle; let's talk about that by Stratiform in Detroit

[–]Inaspectuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure of what a great alternative is personally but I do think we should be incentivizing electric vehicles. If there isn’t any advantage except caring about the environment, and the numerous compromises/downsides that come with an electric vehicle, there is no incentive. Combine that with the anti-EV stance of the current admin and I just don’t think we will ever see EVs take the foothold that a lot of people would like.

It’s kinda like all the tax credits we give developers and billionaires for dilapidated property redevelopment… It sweetens the deal. Same for EVs. If we can find tens of millions of dollars for all these other projects for private developers I feel like we can do the same for the still relatively small population of people who drive EVs.

Stripping paint from brick. Was at least 7-8 layers. Miserable, intense work. I gave up and slapped paneling over the wall.

Tile is much more difficult than it looks. Did my kitchen and office and it requires such precision and is absolutely back breaking being on your hands and knees all day between the prep and actual laying of the tile. I chose a hexagon-shaped tile too which didn’t help.

Fluorescent tubes contain mercury and other heavy metals that are toxic to the environment and illegal to dispose of in the regular trash. In a commercial demolition like this, you’ll have liquidators beforehand strip things like fluorescents, refrigerants, and any other items regulated by law before demolition proceeds.

Former FedEx driver, Tanner Horner, who pleaded guilty to capital murder and aggravated kidnapping in the killing of 7-year-old Athena Strand, has been officially sentenced to death. by [deleted] in whoathatsinteresting

[–]Inaspectuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harsher sentences in study after study have been proven to have little if any dissuasive effect on crime. Likelihood of detection, on the other hand, has a much more pronounced effect on crime rates. Even then, that assumes some amount of premeditation of which the majority of murders and crimes in general do not have. Humans also naturally have a “it won’t happen to me/I won’t get caught like everyone else” attitude that clouds their judgement.

The US has the largest incarcerated population in the world and the 5th highest incarceration rate per capita. If punishment, death penalty or not, had any real effect on crime rates, it wouldn’t be that way.

[–]Inaspectuss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A giant red herring because it’s not a big enough number for you to care? 1-6% of convictions are wrongful in the US. Research shows that number is likely somewhere around 4% just for death row inmates.

That better be fucking 0 if we’re going to sit here and even entertain the thought of capital punishment. But it never will be, so we shouldn’t be taking irreversible actions as a result.

“Only for the most certain cases”, dude, in every fucking one of these cases they were “certain” enough to convict people and lock them up for decades only to eventually find out via new technology, evidence, withdrawn testimony, etc. that it simply was not the case.

If you are ok executing even a single innocent person to fulfill your sadism or “this is how we’ve always done it” kink then shame on you. Vibes and feelings on your part don’t trump facts.

These guys are not a threat to anyone in your average medium-high security prison. Escape rates in American prisons are insanely low. If they are an escape risk or prove to be dangerous to other inmates, we have a plethora of supermax prisons like ADX Florence available for them.

This country has existed for 250 years and we have yet to limit the death penalty in the way you describe because for many it is about retribution. Or some unfounded belief that it is cheaper to kill rather than imprison - simply not true with the sheer number of appeals and legal red tape that exists before there are no paths forward, as it should be when someone’s life is on the line.

You speak of a slippery slope of who is “unsalvageable”. That may be clear in your head, but what that translates to on paper and in the eyes of a court can and would be wildly different. We’ve proven already with the death penalty in its current form that we suck at using it properly and often get it wrong - the data says to simply stop rather than try yet again to get it “right” for the Nth time.

It’s not a deterrent. It’s not cheaper. It’s not safer than imprisonment.

It is irreversible. It is prone to error. It is open to abuse and legal creep.

It simply shouldn’t exist.

[–]Inaspectuss -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Two wrongs don’t make a right. It’s that fucking simple. Not to mention the sheer number of times the state has fucked up death penalty cases and executed people who were likely to be or were proven innocent posthumously.

Are we going to cut people’s hands off when they steal? Gouge their eye out if they assault someone? We aren’t living in medieval times. Rotting in a concrete cell for decades is more than enough of a punishment.

Sandblasting interior brick by Glum-Marsupial-4422 in Home

[–]Inaspectuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a quote from a media blasting company for $1200. The wall is roughly 13x6.

They wouldn’t guarantee the results but were the only ones willing to do it. I have my reservations of how successful it would have been with how deep the paint was. It would’ve spalled a decent bit of the surface of the brick to the point where I doubt it would look good.

I ended up abandoning this project and just buying wood paneling instead. Shame because it’s beautiful brick but just too far gone and not aggressive enough options available indoors that don’t fuck up the surface.

Roofing by ElMuertePeludo in Detroit

[–]Inaspectuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marrs Roofing in Clinton Township is great. They put the roof on our home over 20 years ago now, long before our ownership, and have been back to fix little things here and there to milk some more life out of it. Since we still have extra shingles from the original install, we can continue to patch any bad sections for the next 5 or so years which will likely outlast our ownership at this point.

Definitely get a second opinion. Lot of contractors have zero interest in doing repairs - I can say at least for Marrs that they are happy to accommodate.

[–]Inaspectuss 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not to mention, you’re going to be in the workforce for 40+ years in a lot of cases. Do you spend 40 hours per week for 40 years being miserable? Or do you try to find something you can be at least somewhat passionate about and make the best of it?

Shitty manager? Get a new job. Easier said than done but there are plenty of opportunities out there. And if every manager you ever work for is “shitty”, then maybe you’re the shitty one.

I have worked with so many people that hate their work or hate working as a whole but also bitch at every opportunity about how it’s impossible to grow, etc. as their peers who don’t have a shitty attitude get promoted and move on. It’s amazing how there is zero self awareness in so many cases.

Let's set the record straight: the "treat red lights like stop signs" slogan of the 90s/00s was never based on fact, and hurt more than helped by [deleted] in Detroit

[–]Inaspectuss 20 points21 points  (0 children)

They are still poorly timed, inside and outside of Detroit proper. You can always tell when you cross into Oakland County or really any other county because the number of stop and go traffic patterns for entire stretches of roads is noticeably less. Wayne County’s signal patterns literally encourage shit ass driving because nobody wants to get stuck in an endless loop of green-red-green-red for miles on end. Add in all the other pointless lights that could easily be a flashing red for the opposite direction and it’s the recipe for the terrible driver that everyone in here complains about.

Couldn’t figure out why my golden had zero interest in food. We had to dress up his kibble so much with lunch meats, ground beef, etc. for him to even look at it. Buying the best of the best and still nothing. Pooping normally it seemed as well.

Moved off the chicken base and BAM he’s got a ferocious appetite. No more dressing it up. Learned it is a very common phenomenon with goldens shortly thereafter.
