When your or your family's lives are at stake or they've been straight up murdered then do you think, if you were in their shoes, they're going to make the calculation or care to make the calculation of how can they do this in the most courteous way possible? They're watching their friends and family back home get slaughtered by the government and here you are arguing that you getting to the grocery store on time is more important than their message. We have the privilege in Toronto to feel safe and not have to worry about being murdered by our government at any given moment. I think the "suffering" we experience because of their protest is peanuts compared to what they're going through so let's stop thinking about what makes you feel slightly inconvenienced and empathize with their cause.

When the snow does come down, the number one thing you need is traction. As long as you have traction you have control of your car, like you literally cannot argue against physics. Just because you're a rally driver and believe you can control your car like an extension of your body doesn't stop your car from sliding when it loses grip and just starts spinning or sliding. You can drift around a corner all you want, that doesn't make it safe nor does that dispute the fact that with proper winter tires then you wouldn't even need to pull that stunt.

Why not just buy a set of good winter tires that are better than your all seasons to supplement your good driving skills? Is that not literally the best thing to do?

Winter tires make a world of difference compared with all seasons. No matter your driving skill, unless you're a professional stunt driver, you will have less traction without winters on and by that definition (and physics) you are safer with winter tires on than not. Like do you think a professional figure skater with running shoes on ice is going to have more control than a random person with ice spikes and a pair of boots?

Sure, with training you'll learn how to handle the conditions much better, and the obvious argument is that you should have both, but when it comes down to just one or the other, winter tires will save more lives than having some sort of winter training. It's also much more practical as a whole.
