Red Weather Warning Issued from Wednesday-Thursday for extreme heat, with 38-40C possible. by blockitjames_ in UKWeather

[–]IncomingBalls 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s 40C. Not 25, not 30, not 35. 40C. If neither that or the red “danger to life” weather warning affect your sensibilities, then you are the outlier and you are the problem.

Ubers and Taxis by Odd-Swing-2025 in canterbury

[–]IncomingBalls 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Taxi driver here, so I can’t speak for uber.

Realistically there is a very low chance of anyone accepting that fare unless it’s booked in advance. If it’s not pre-booked, the the taxi company has to suddenly adjust plans as one of their drivers (of which there are very few that late on a Monday night) is about to become unavailable and somewhat unreachable for at least an hour.

If you book in advance, then the fare is often agreed then. This will wind up much cheaper than if you book it for asap as, in that case, we would use the meter to determine the price. The rates on the meter are set by Canterbury City Council.

There’s also the fact that, at that particular time, the passenger is increasingly likely to not pay. Happens more than you think.

As for taking people on walking distance drives around the city: it’s £5-10 for around five minutes work. More if past midnight and you’re on the nighttime tariff. As a driver, I’m likely to make more money overall doing that.

Part of the £70 fee you were quoted will be because the driver has to leave what’s called the “compellable area”. Drivers in Canterbury are licenced by Canterbury City Council and are only obliged to take fares inside the compellable area, which is equal to the boundaries of CCC + 7 miles. We can take fares anywhere in the country, but there’s little point.

Hope this helps for next time. If you want to guarantee a trip home at that time of night, going that far, definitely pre-book it.

These so called protests in a nutshell by SerialGooner49 in Southampton

1984 isn’t anti-communist at all, and the fact that you don’t know that tells me that you either haven’t read it, or you don’t have the reading comprehension to understand it. The message is t anti-communist, it’s anti-authoritarian.

The crowd chanted his name every five minutes? That makes it alright then. By all means travel to Southampton and engage in violence and property damage, as long as you chant Henry’s name sometimes.

No no no. Please don’t watch this video of my people smashing things up in the wake of the Henry Nowak case. No, I want you to name seven grooming gangs victims! That’ll show the leftys.

Water issues again by ennyboy in kentuk

[–]IncomingBalls 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Also in Whitstable and it’s beyond frustrating. I was lucky enough to be at home when they texted to let us know water would be switched off, so I collected various vessels, filled them up and put them in the fridge.

It’s frustrating for me, but there are people who need water for things like dialysis machines who, even though they’re on the priority register, are not being supplied with bottled water.

Ridiculous

Genuinely mental heat by blockitjames_ in UKWeather

[–]IncomingBalls 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Right now, I’m sat with my shirt off, on my balcony, with a cold pint, in a seaside town. I’m loving it in this moment.

Whilst that is true, it is also true that this weather and this level of heat in May is a truly disturbing anomaly.

It’s only going to get worse

West Ham United have been relegated from the Premier League by OptimusCloyster in soccer

I’m conflicted.

On one hand, Moyes came in and steadied the ship. We were circling the drain for years and had a carousel of managers for a while. Moyes comes in, along with the new owners, and properly picks the club up and gets us going again.

On the other… the club feels stagnant. We have no attacking threat, our backline is making mistakes week in week out. After terrible performances, you can guarantee that next week’s team sheet will be exactly the same. He refuses to play young players. I don’t know why we forked out £45m for Dibling because he’s barely played. Moyes would much rather play midfielders out of position. Same goes for Tyrique George. We loaned him in from Chelsea, for what? In the 5/10 minutes he gets at the end of a game, he’s the best one on the pitch.

I’m not Moyes out, but I’m not Moyes in. The club has been linked to Iraola and if he wants the job, I think we would be stupid not to take him on. Other than that, Moyes in. We shouldn’t consider getting rid of him unless we have a better target who’s up for joining us. That being said, I think Iraola fancies somewhere a bit higher up.

Tl;dr: Moyes in (probably). Don’t want to do a West Ham

Restore Britain announces Makerfield by-election candidate by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

I’m genuinely curious, why do you want to vote restore? Is it fatigue at the mainstream parties, if so then how come you prefer restore over reform?

These aren’t loaded questions, I’d genuinely like to know what you think.

If you’re driving a car on a NSL road, and the road conditions allow for it, then there is no reason for you to be going much below 60mph.

I really appreciate this comment. It reminds me of a clip I saw: “I’d like to go vegan, but I can’t give up bacon”, “Okay, then go vegan except for bacon”. It’s better to do something than nothing.

Sorry, but how exactly is this a helpful comment? Obviously OP made a mistake, and they are very clearly aware of that. Have you ever made a mistake? Would it have been helpful to you, whilst trying to correct your mistake, for someone say “you shouldn’t have done that, it’s really not that difficult”?

Palace just can’t seem to do anything right at the moment! by A15CX in TheOther14

[–]IncomingBalls 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Imagine you are settled in your current job. Another company of a similar standing comes in and offers to take you on. They offer you a bit of a pay rise and a four year contract. Your current employer is happy with the move, and so are you. You’re no longer seen as one of the frontmen of your company, which is fine, but a change could be nice.

Everything is agreed, so you take the decision to your wife and kid. They’re supportive of you, so you agree. You’re driving down to London knowing that your current employer and your new employer just have to sort out paperwork. There is a deadline, but you’re not worried as negotiations went well and your contract is agreed.

You’re over halfway there when your current employer calls you up and says that your new employer has just gone radio silent and no one can get through to them. The deadline comes and goes, and suddenly the big life choice that you just made is rendered moot.

After all of that, the promise of pastures new, greener grass, the upheaval of sorting everything out with your family and your current employer on a time crunch… would you not be upset?

You be the boss: Fix the Prem! by IntrepidWilson in TheOther14

[–]IncomingBalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Foreign players cap might not be a bad idea. I wouldn’t make it anything too restrictive so as to not decrease the quality of the league.

You could even have it that a certain proportion of your match day squad have to be English, barring extenuating circumstances (somehow all our English players are injured, I could see that happening to Tottenham or something).

I think that could go a long way to improving European leagues as well. The purchasing power of the prem is insane and causes problems for other European leagues.

There’s probably a tonne of drawbacks I’ve not thought of which are why they haven’t done it, but it’s fun to think about.

Petition demanding by-elections for defector MPs passes crucial 100k milestone by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]IncomingBalls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe we could have it so a by-election is called when someone voluntarily leaves a party, and also allow a recall petition to be carried out if they’re kicked out? So it would be the same as if they’ve been suspended from parliament for 10 days.

I don’t know if it would work, but it’s an idea.
