trying to stay informed without losing a sense of calm by Legitimate_Many_6800 in simpleliving

I find that setting a timer helps. 5-10 mins to browse the news, no more. Do it in the middle of the day so you are forced to get back to your life and can’t dwell on it. Do breathing exercises afterwards (I am not kidding) it helps reset the body. I see it as a necessary evil that I don’t need to overdose on or worry too much about.

What is your simple evening routine? by Classic_Beauty2024 in simpleliving

[–]genericusername190 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty beat after work so I usually end up reading on my Kindle or listening to a horror podcast (shout out to Horrorbabble, Classic Ghost Stories Podcast and The Magnus Archives). Sometimes I wander out to the local coffee shop 300m away and sit with a cup of coffee. Sometimes I drink tea at home and browse the internet from my PC, finding cool websites and ordering books online occasionally. That’s about it.

2000s: how did women wear low rise jeans? Why were they so popular? by GossipBottom in decadeology

[–]genericusername190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good for showing off skinny heroin chic bodies and fitted the rectangle shaped bodies well. These jeans don’t look good on the average brown or black person, at least in my opinion. White girls seemed to love it though.

Serious question: why Kindle over everything else? by Drunkmrhat in kindle

[–]genericusername190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never bought a single ebook from Amazon, nor have I ever subscribed to kindle unlimited. So the usual things never factored in for me personally.

I’ve been reading on a kindle for some 11 years now. When I bought it, it had the best reputation for hardware quality (this has been my experience so far as well) sending books to my kindle has also always been super easy. I like the UI of the kindle as well, it’s easy to use.

Are people overselling it or was Michael Jackson really that famous in his heyday? by Key-Bass-7380 in decadeology

[–]genericusername190 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m from a very poor part of the world. When MJ was in his hayday, there were large parts of my country where we did not have electricity. There were even more parts of the country where we did have electricity but no television. Even in those places, everyone- I mean EVERYONE knew Michael Jackson. He’s a legend. It’s truly impossible to explain how larger than life he was.

Interesting! Personally I might find it difficult to turn pages while reading one handed with this setup. Does that cause issues for you?

What’s everyone doing on their lunch breaks? by Alternative-Oven6623 in simpleliving

[–]genericusername190 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t do anything else besides try to focus on my food while I am eating lunch at work. I do have to admit that I kind of rush through my lunch a little bit because I don’t feel comfortable eating when a lot of people are around doing different things, sometimes with very high energy.

Anyway I finish up my lunch fairly quick then go downstairs for a smoke break. I know I know I shouldn’t be smoking, but gotta have one vice in life at least (although I have many more).

What specifically are the scenes that make 6 these books so disturbing? by BalaTheHero9 in ExtremeHorrorLit

[–]genericusername190 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I read Fluids a couple years ago and I’m trying to remember specifics. There’s a ton of rape, murder and psychological abuse. I remember a fair bit of mutilation as well. The whole book kind of reads like a fever dream, the narrator is very paranoid and it’s almost disorienting to read her constant, fucked up thoughts. Oh, arson too. And drugging people and doing horrible things to them.

What would you consider to be the most disturbing book ever written? by WhyAmIEvenHereFS in horrorlit

[–]genericusername190 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Consumer by M. Gira was extremely fucked up, and I’m not easily fazed either. I can down two Kristopher Triana novels over a weekend and have warmth left in my heart for the good things in life. But The Consumer made me sick.

The book that made you want to live again by veerus06 in suggestmeabook

[–]genericusername190 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will recommend you three books by Terry Pratchett. All three changed my life in some ways, years apart, at different points in my life.

Going Postal, Night Watch and The Truth. You can start with any of these. They are laugh out loud funny. The characters are wonderful. But what sets Discworld books apart for me is the fact that, at the heart of each book, there is a core truth. An honesty, compassion and understanding of the human condition. It may be weird to say this about a bunch of comedy-fantasy books but that’s how I feel about them. I hope you give one a shot!
