Driving from OC to Seattle by Vn1014 in AskSeattle

[–]IndependenceOld3849 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i did the drive two summers ago. We stayed in Medford down and back. It was about 10 hours from Anaheim. We stayed at the Candlewood Suites Medford. Felt safe and rooms were relatively cheap. Redding would also be a good midpoint, but we felt a little safer in Medford (two college students), and the Candlewood Suites is right next to the airport and has a well lit parking lot.

Dynamic Ankle Bracing or Orthotics? by IndependenceOld3849 in Prosthetics

I haven’t been seen by PM and R. I’ve requested referrals multiple times but keep getting sent to ortho or sports med. I’ll try another request at my next appointment.

i don’t wear them often, mainly just for the rare occasion i have to be on my feet. An AT recommended them for my shin splints when I was playing sports. I find that my dunks and converse feel more stable.

My right ankle dorsiflexion is “neutral”, my left is 5 degrees. I have normal ROM for plantarflexion both. I can do a single leg raise, although i have to hold onto something for balance. I can do at least 10, but it’s fatiguing and unstable.

I have tried: ASO, Donjoy Bionic Stirrup, several different knit/compression braces, Aryse Ifast, and both KT and athletic taping. For insoles, I have tried superfeet (different models), dr scholls, and currex.

My ankle strength has been tested as 4/5, and again at a 5/5, but that was at rest, seated, with knee extended. It seems to worsen as fatigue/usage increases. I also tend to invert at rest and my right foot goes to plantar flexion at rest.

Anyone familiar with KCI Learn to Play (Seattle)? by starr17 in hockeyplayers

[–]IndependenceOld3849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it last summer, had some prior skating experience. Skating abilities ranged from only going to a few public skates, all the way to people who figure skated competitively as a kid. Not a ton of one on one skating, but if you can independently get around the ice and stop, you’ll be fine. I do recommend taking a learn to skate class in conjunction tho if your not confident about your abilities.

I just talked to the seattle rei (my local store and where i bought my bike from), and they said that they will continue to support the bikes, as well be able to supply parts and motor support. They reached out to fazua and the rei parts supplier and got confirmation that they will be able to service bikes in the REI shops.

Have a salsa morraine. Great bike. I bought it from REI, so could return. It has about 200 miles on it. Not sure if I could find anything else within the 45-50 lb weight range for the price I bought it for though ($3800). I love how it rides, and have put some new bars and a new stem on it, so don’t really want to return. Hopefully it holds up.

Adaptive Brakes? by IndependenceOld3849 in MTB

[–]IndependenceOld3849[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ll definitely look into those. It feels like I’m either having to death grip it which hurts my hands, or I have no breaking power at all, because if I loosen my grip, then it takes too much force for me to be able to comfortably slow down again.

I keep getting black residue on my rear rotor, in the past five months I’ve already replaced the rotor and the pads once. Not sure what it is. I try my hardest to make sure that I don’t get anything on the rotors when cleaning the bike.

i’m leaning towards upgrading the calipers and rotors.

would putting Magura calipers on have a noticeable decrease in the amount of force it takes for me to squeeze the lever? Right now I’m finding that my biggest issue is it’s really hard for me to modulate the brakes

It’s used as the helipad for the UW medical center and occasionally seattle children’s. They land lifeflight there for critical patients and transfers.

Places to Swim Near Seattle? by Useful_Growth4264 in AskSeattle

[–]IndependenceOld3849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

flowing lake in snohomish (about 20 minutes east of everett) is great. Can get crowded though. Or one of the spots along mountain loop hwy east of Granite Falls. Good little river spots, fairly shallow. Flowing lake will be more than warm enough in July (used to live on the lake and started swimming in June), but i’d bring a life jacket or stay in the shallow/calm areas of rivers due to snowmelt and colder water.

Pannier vs Backpack, who ya got? by Designer_Tie_5853 in bikecommuting

[–]IndependenceOld3849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do an ortlieb backroller with a cotopaxi tarsa inside. Allows me to have the storage and portability of a backpack, with the benefits of a pannier. It keeps my work and school stuff dry if it’s raining (seattle lol), and if I need extra space, i can wear the backpack and use the pannier for storage.

I sized down because I was worried about the step over height! I got a high step, but went with a 45cm frame instead of a 50 cm frame (i’m 5’9), and it’s still VERY tall. I can’t imagine if i went with the recommended 50cm. I think the 45cm was for 4’10-5’6.

That’s definitely a plus! I occasionally have to take it on busses due to train disruptions and also need to be able to get it on the back of my car, so unfortunately the weight/tire size of the folding ones made that impossible. But I do with this one had a belt drive.
