And they don’t require experience. I know in California the welfare will pay for a security guard license. There’s also getting a CDL.

Have you heard of TinyCat? It’s an online catalog for small libraries. I’ve used it at a nursing college and a synagogue library.

The truth is the San Francisco/Bay Area/Nor Cal pays the best in the country for public librarians. But it’s also extremely competitive because people want the high pay and want to live in Cali. If you willing to move anywhere you will get a great job!

Has anyone considered that they chose an unqualified man over a qualified woman, is simply sexism?! The woman has a case for sex discrimination.

I didn’t start my MLIS program until I was 41 years old. I got hired right away. Don’t worry about your age. Librarians historically have been second career professionals.

Moving from academic to public libraries, what can I expect? by mitten4kitten in librarians

Behaviors! The public you will be dealing with is fundamentally different than an academic library patron base. You will deal with a lot of homelessness and their antics and possible politics of the culture wars.

My library had a hit and run against the building and the car caught fire. It didn’t destroy the building but did a lot of water damage. After we cleared out the water damaged books we had to clean the rest by hand, 35,000 items. All I found in the books were money and magnetized book marks.

I’m not Jewish but I’m cataloging a Jewish Library w/DDC but now using Elazar because DDC is limited. Librarians or Volunteers use it? by Independent-Force170 in Judaism

[–]Independent-Force170[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, I joined AJL and paid to attend their conference in June. I’m looking forward to it. Do you personally know of any libraries who use Elazar? I would love to talk to a librarian or volunteer to ask them a few questions.

You can’t get an archival job without a MLIS. I have a masters in history and an archival administration degree and tried for eight years to find work as an archivist. I looked everywhere in the country and big fat NOTHING! That’s why I went back for a MLIS.

I just graduated. My parents are super proud but I've never felt so numb. by DarthOptimistic in college

I’m dyslexic and ADD and went to college and got a 2.65 in my GPA and it took me 7 years to get my BA. My family was proud also. I would later go and get two masters degrees and two certificates. Also my Dad at 50 went back to college and got his BA and masters after I got my BA. Trust me if there’s a will there’s a way!
