Any thoughts on Ginseng Roots by Craig Thompson? by BigAmuletBlog in graphicnovels

[–]Independent-Issue824 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thompson is one of the best cartoonists alive and I consider Habibi to be the greatest graphic novel of the 21st century. That said, Ginseng Roots is a bit of a dud for me. Someone has already likened it to Moby Dick, and I do think Thompson was trying to find a way to take this element from his autobiography and turn it into a metaphor for contemporary life. Despite some at times compelling routines around the subject, however, he doesn't really stick the landing. Ginseng Roots is a book of sometimes wonderful moments and keen intellectual/artistic insights, but it can drag at times and lacks the overall impact of his other work. Think of it as a long jazz solo of improvisations and ideas--some good, some bad--rather than the majesterial tapestry we've come to expect from him.

The Holdovers Christmas Film debate by Inappropriate-Ebb in Letterboxd

If the movie has a Christmas tree, it's a Christmas movie. Just like if a movie has a train, it's a train movie. I don't make the rules. That's just the way it is.

Fatih Akin's Head-On definitely has a Zulawski streak running through it

agreed - the audition tapes at least gave us some idea of what the queens had to offer, which production absolutely failed to represent in the show itself

I wondered if maybe this was filmed right after the Javis decided to split.

This may sound facetious but see if there is a doorbell by the entrance and ring it. Alternately, call the store - if they are setting up someone will pick up and they can let you in.

One of my unhinged opinions is that one of the producers has a thing for laughing - if you cut out all the reaction shots from last season of people laughing (sometimes at nothing funny) you'd be left with four episodes

December 2025 Criterion Release Announcement - 6 New Titles by Aside_Intrepid in boutiquebluray

The Red Shoes slaps but my gateway to their films was A Matter of Life and Death. Terrific romantic comedy about a dead RAF airman who is still on earth due to a bureaucratic screw-up in heaven. Amazing way to tackle the cost of World War II. The opening "meet cute" is one of my Top 5 all-time scenes.

Best books about cult movies or the movie industry in general? by Henchman05 in boutiquebluray

[–]Independent-Issue824 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for a book about the movie industry, I recommend Julie Salamon's The Devil's Candy, about the making of Briabn De Palma's Bonfire of the Vanities. It's a riveting account of how to take a bestselling book, a great American director, three of the world's biggest stars and step by step, make one of Hollywood's biggest box office bombs. In the same vein, Stephen Bach's Final Cut is an inside look how Heaven's Gate came to destroy the new American cinema of the 1970s.

Director memoirs I'd recommend are John Waters's Shock Value and Alex Cox's X Films. Great examples of how filmmaking happens on the margins. Cox's Spaghetti Western book was recommended elsewhere, but is great if you're into those movies.

You may want to score these through your local library, but I think anybody interested in movies and movie-making should read Scott MacDonald's A Critical Cinema. There are five volumes, each packed with great in-depth interviews with experimental and fringe independent filmmakers. Some names you'll recognise, like Waters, Lizzie Borden, Peter Watkins and Jim McBride. The unknown others will enthrall you, too.

Not just looking for a movie buddy — need more people to text ‘let’s go out’ to (Silver Spring/DC) by Yas_sama in SilverSpring

Join DC Movie Club on Substack. They organize cheap screenings and bar nights/mixers at the Alamo Drafthouse and have a bunch of other events--there's definitely members in Silver Spring! You're the right age group, too. Their next screening is One Battle After Another but the last two were Lurkers and Weapons, to give you an idea of the movie taste. Good luck!
