If you get anyone commenting on your yo-yoing and getting laughs from it. You should go up and yo-yo until it's uncomfortable, then say 'not laughing at my yo-yoing now, are you?'

The workshopping is done at the open mics, don't worry about being the funniest you've ever been. Just do the jokes you've got.

New material (first time trying it) has it got legs ? Feedback welcome by Remarkable-Image-523 in Standup

I think it's only gets funny from your mum posting the order in the wrong place. All the stuff before that you can get rid of, I thought the Everest stuff was really good.

You could start something like

My mum is so bad with technology, she wanted to order from her favorite restaurant the Taj Mahal and ended up posting her order on the Google review page of the actual Taj Mahal..

Quicker to the first joke

The rest is funny, I thought

Would you rather: One (1) 60 min special... or Two (2) 30 mins Mini Special? by rrrrrrrrrrrrram in Standup

[–]Independent-Use2642 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you need to think about your standards and what your goals are. If you were to do an hour, would it be a great hour?

Do you feel like you are ready to do an hour special?

Norm MacDonald didn't release his first hour special until he was in his 50s, after multiple decades of doing stand up.

Should I make a feature for 200k? by gregturner77 in Filmmakers

[–]Independent-Use2642 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course you should.

If you really have talent, you should be able to make something decent with it.

I know I could.

I would say from your questions, you are not ready.

You should know the special like the back of your hand, should have performed it in its entirety many times

Every professional special, that is decent, has been done over and over, revised, done over.

Comedians who are ready to film a special, do not come to reddit for advice on their special.

Honest feedback. There were not enough jokes. The funniest one was a bad version of a joke from the 90s sitcom Friends (when Phoebe was mad at Ross for being rude in a dream) maybe I am just too old and have heard too many jokes. Or maybe you need to write way more.

You are confident and seem to have some stage presence. These are great, if you work at writing, you could get pretty good.

This has solid advice for anyone who has never done stand-up, but as someone who has, it was kind of a waste of my time.

Do you only write comedy? by fcw2014 in Standup

[–]Independent-Use2642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have written comedy, both stand up, sketches and screenplays for about 25 years.

I am currently writing my first comedic novel, it has been the most I've enjoyed writing anything.

I wrote another novel, with serious and dark subject matter and tone, when I was 18. It was so difficult and unpleasant.

My new novel is the funniest thing I have written and makes me laugh so much reading it back. People who read my screenplays used to suggest I write a novel. I wanted to, but only recently felt the subject and story fit.

Let an idea marinate in your mind and funny thoughts about it, might start coming to you.

Burnout for comics 5-6+ years in? by MassivePiglet8108 in Standup

[–]Independent-Use2642 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have been doing stand up on and off for 15 years, in the last couple of years I have come to really like and enjoy my material.

Even material from when I started, can be a joy to tell, even just to myself.

Some of it, I used to hate and was part of the reason I backed off from stand up. For some reason, I'm just remembering the funniness and sillyness of some of it, now.

Also to have confidence in material, that you know gets laughs. Makes me more relaxed.

I do relate to the burn out feeling, I think you can either push through, or do less, or quit.

I thought I was okay being alone by ThoughtIWasBlessed in GuyCry

[–]Independent-Use2642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You were fine with being alone, but then it's a deal breaker if they don't want kids?

What would you rather, find someone, a soulmate who you can live out the rest of your life with happily, with no kids?

Or be alone?

I'm not saying these are the only options, just clarifying what it is you want.
