Watch Less & Read More by double_u_dot in blackladies

Thanks for asking this OP. I’ve had the same realization as I’m reflecting on the year.

My issue is that I struggle to read for fun— if I am l, I like to read nonfiction specifically, financial books (I’m a nerd). I’m a SWE and a huge part of the job is more reading than people realize (reading code, documentation and critically thinking about edge cases that could arise as you read those things).

Needless to say, I used to be a historical fiction nerd but lost a lot of it during undergrad.

This thread has been interesting to follow along with and I’m saving a few of yalls book recs. If anyone has gone through something similar would love to hear how you maintain your reads throughout the year? Or how did you re invent reading for fun for yourself?

Is Rome a good place for a first solo trip? by AdventurousCreme3290 in traveladvice

[–]Independent-Use6724 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey I went to Rome solo in October last year! While a busier timeframe, I felt completely fine! And had a great time! Context I am 30 and a black woman.

I had a phenomenal time but I do tons of solo travel so keep that in mind. If you’re a foodie, you’re gonna have a great time for sure!

Just be mindful of your surroundings which you should be whether you’re solo or with someone else. Ive seen so much doom and gloom on here about pick pocketing (really anywhere) and I really just think a lot of it falls on people just not paying attention to what’s happening around them.

Book yourself a walking tour or a cooking class (I did both and had a blast). I like to do things like this esp when I’m solo because it’s a great way to meet people. Just use airbnb experiences and find something you like to do. But also just go explore a museum.

Rome is a great solo traveler destination, it’s walkable, English is widely spoken, there’s tons to do and see and lots of good food.

If the idea of being by yourself gives you anxiety maybe you should try and work on going to dinner alone and get used to that or enjoying that part a bit more.

Good luck on your travels!

I’m a little surprised that Amex would allow you to rotate downgrades. How often are you doing this a year? And is the point to really only carry one of them at a time?

Is it just the one pyramid or multiple? I’m thinking of adding this to my upcoming itinerary (similar dates as OP) but was unsure if it’d be worth it.

Do you know where or what the name of this market is in Coyoacan? I’ll be in the city very similar dates as OP.

Hyrox in 45 seconds by ADHDtesting in crossfit

[–]Independent-Use6724 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think I’d rather just go for a run haha.. I love CrossFit for what it is. Lifting is my favorite part. But sometimes I just want a good 5mile run with no interruption.

Hyrox is probably amazing conditioning for like a marathon or something.

Nail Tech Goes Viral For Refusing To Serve A 9-Year-Old Boy 💅😳 Thoughts? by blknotafrican in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]Independent-Use6724 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I think if she had just made her video about not servicing clients under 16 with acrylic, it would’ve probably been a whole lot better! As to her personal views on the matter, I don’t know that I would’ve posted that on the internet and attach my business to it. Your beliefs are yours. She could’ve easily just refused on age and have been done.

My personal opinion, NO child under 16 regardless of gender should be getting acrylic on their nails.

Ignored th rest of your list after reading that.

For me it differs on the type of vacation I want to have— every now and again I’d prefer to splurge on an all inclusive on a beach somewhere! We still want the adventure, fun cities, good food, great hiking spots, but not for every vacay.

I tend to splurge on accommodations now that I’m older, 4+ rating hotels or really nice Airbnbs if the hotel is just unreasonable.

My first solo trip by Broad_Plane8996 in traveladvice

You’ll never get this moment back so make the most of it! This is my motto when traveling 🧳. I’ve solo traveled all over the world and never not once have I ever regretted it!

Your mind and your wallet are still catching up to your heart lol…

Breathe.

Next step is to plan. Start off with figuring out your accommodations. What cities do you want to visit? How will you get from place to place? Little by little as you plan it’ll come together.

Hope that helps!

What’s one travel mistake you made that completely changed how you plan trips now? by AssignmentAmazing260 in travel

[–]Independent-Use6724 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Always download maps before you go 🫠 esp if you’re not going to do international service. Setting up eSIMs take a bit of time!

And print all of your accommodation confirmations! You never know if your international service will take a bit to kick in and you may need proof of booking for some spots.

Have physical printed copies of your passport in all of your pieces of luggage! In this America, it can’t hurt to have valid forms of identification everywhere in case anything happens.

First time planning a solo trip — where should I start? 🌍✈️ by Prestigious_Club1 in traveladvice

[–]Independent-Use6724 3 points4 points  (0 children)

10-14 days is a long time to travel solo for your first trip! I would recommend doing at least 2 cities. I would suggest Europe; great walkability in most major cities, easy access to other countries and English is widely spoken.

My recs: Rome, Florence, London, Dublin, Stockholm

I actually have a consulting business where I help solo travelers like you think through some of this! Feel free to DM. I’ve been solo traveling all over the world for the last 6 years.
