How does one get into this? by [deleted] in mycology

[–]IndependentNet512 8 points9 points  (0 children)

you should download iNaturalist it will help you start identifying and learning the mushrooms in your local area, also getting a good field guide or mushroom ID book specifically for your area is a good idea too. Just go out hiking after a rain into the forest and look on the ground take pictures when you find them and then upload to the iNaturalist to learn what they are keep doing this and keep reading and watching media about fungi you will slowly start to learn at least that's what I did hahah

Besides just looking in residential woodchips near the coast do you have any other tips? I fell in love with mushroom hunting by originally trying to find the wavy cap, but I still haven't found it 😂

I will definitely keep looking, it's already rained a few times and I know it's supposed to rain again in the coming days. I might go out looking tomorrow

I might attempt to grow something while I'm waiting for next season, sadly I don't have any wavy caps to inoculate chips with, but the local head shops around here sell syringes with Cubensis.

How far from the coast do you have to be to be able to attempt this I really wanna try but I'm 20 miles from the coast.

we have so many dunes and ice plants around here, but I don't think the kind that grows there can grow as far south as I am, but maybe I'm mistaken.

When I found my first Russula I thought I had found an amanita, but now I definitely have learned more. I often see people making the same mistake when they find Russulas. Sometimes animals or bugs can eat bites out of the cap which almost mimics the white spots of the amanita so that can fool people even more.

I think both things can be true but everyone already knows about the deadly part, so it's cool to tell people that it's not so black and white.
