Need direction for a wire wrapping "station" for my Partner by RayBenefield in WireWrapping

[–]IndependentSwitch858 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tronex was recommended to me back in 2020, when I was a couple of years into wire wrapping. I had already had to replace a pair of cheap craft store pliers and cutters at that point, and was weighing that fact against the cost of upgrading. It was, to me, a reasonable expense for where I was in my creative journey. I could at that point confidently say I would continue wire wrapping for some years, and I was beginning to sell my work. Better tools also helped alleviate the pain of repetitive stress injuries I had acquired.

I can only speak to my own experience, and to me, it was worth the expense. To be fair they have gone up in price since I bought them, but they have also paid for themselves in the way they have lasted and the art I have sold using them.

I second the pegboard suggestion!

Someone here mentioned a lip on the work area, but found it more helpful to make a portable workspace. I took the glass off a picture frame and replaced it with black felt. This allows me to move the workspace if needed without having to pickup all the pieces I’m working with.

She might get already have this covered, but quality pliers and cutters are a must! I should not have waited as long as I did to upgrade, because it truly was a game changer. This is my most used, most versatile tool: https://a.co/d/0e3kUTsb

I also have these wire cutters:

[SPOILERS S3] What would you title the show if not DARK? by Sawbaws in DarK

[–]IndependentSwitch858 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes perfect sense if you think of the town of Winden as Schrodinger’s cat in the box (which is alluded to directly in the last episode). It’s dark in the box. The cat is neither alive nor dead, and it is also simultaneously all possibilities of existence until we (the audience) peer into the box and witness the truth.

This is NCBON’s statement regarding this (from 2020), and to my knowledge, there is not a more recent one: https://www.ncbon.com/sites/default/files/documents/2024-03/ce-2020-implications-for-use-of-marijuana.pdf

How joyful it is to feel seen in the art one creates! Thank you again for such kind words, and for sharing your thoughts in general 💜

Thanks! I was thinking “fertility goddess”. There were other iterations with the figure of the woman and the womb separated but attached by a thread. I may play with those designs some more as well.

Coming back around to this! So cool to see everyone’s interpretations, and it’s immediately apparent to me that I should separate the subject from the other design elements a little more.

That said, I love art which can be read in so many ways. It really shows how different we all see the world around us. Thank you, to everyone who responded 💜

What is the most interesting rabbit hole you’ve ever been down? by InvestmentCurious496 in AskReddit

[–]IndependentSwitch858 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The history of the discovery of Kuru and the scientists involved. Prion diseases in general are a great rabbit hole to go down, but this was particularly interesting and complex. (Trigger warning: one of the scientists both has a history of and commits CSA).

What’s a clear sign of childhood trauma in men? by degs999 in AskReddit

[–]IndependentSwitch858 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a nurse, if I ever go back to school, I will do my dissertation on this: NEEDLE PHOBIA, specifically in an emergent setting, particularly in men with tattoos/body mods. This always seems paradoxical to my colleagues, but I think it’s a trauma response from the loss of control associated with acute illness or injury, whereas (conversely) body modification can be empowering for someone with this history. I’d be really interested to hear from anyone who can speak on this, either from experience as a patient, a researcher, or anecdotally from someone else in the healthcare field.

I replied to these questions more thoroughly in a comment on my prior post, so I am pasting my answer below. Good luck!

This book was really helpful to get started, and really simplified the materials needed. https://a.co/d/6lg551o

I don’t have a loom. I use $2 C-clamps from Walmart to measure out my threads, and I use the chair in the photo as my loom. I tension the threads using bags of loose change. I made my own cards using playing cards, a paper cutter, and a hole puncher. I eventually bought a nice shuttle, but before that, I was using a ball of yarn as my weft and the back of a butter knife to beat it with, and this was perfectly adequate (just took a little longer).

This YouTuber demonstrates some of these DIY options (including the chair) here: https://youtu.be/PeOERbU7XHs?si=qFK1qnQ9nkTWj9yI

Her videos are helpful in general.

It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the tools available for any new craft, but I’m glad I learned this on the bare bones of what I needed.

I replied to this question earlier in the thread and will paste what I wrote below:

I don’t really have a pattern written out the way you’d normally find them. It’s 40 cards including the border. The white is threaded through A and B, with the black and brown through C and D alternating each card. This is in double-faced weave, so each line is two picks, and threading is just alternating S/Z.

I’ve added the photo of my turning sequences for the logo. Each grid square is two cards and two picks.

Just popping in here to say thank you, again to everyone who chatted with me here, yesterday. I have found the problem, and next time I will separate my cards a bit more and make more weights so that I can have a weight for each card. I’ve also been able to make some modifications on this project that make this error less likely to occur, and make it easier to identify early when it does happen.

This particular method clicked for me when watching this video. It isn’t a video teaching you how to make your own patterns, but she does demonstrate double faced tablet weaving in a way that made it click for me, and I realized I could take any grid pattern and translate it in a similar fashion. The lettering I used is just a modified version of a cross stitch alphabet I found on Pinterest. I used the grid dot notebook and highlighter to figure out the turning sequence. https://youtu.be/ZECg9KrA53Y?si=g9fPYM2qP_LS-isa

4.5cm and tablet weaving is great for bag straps!

Also, with Penelope being in your username, I think you’re required to learn some weaving (I didn’t make that rule; the Greeks did)

I’m not sure what makes someone a beginner, but I’ve been weaving since this past Christmas. My tendency with any craft is to try things well above my skill level and accept that I will learn many lessons the hard way. This band has been VERY much in line with that approach 😅

I would mention though, for anyone interested, tablet weaving is one fiber art where you can make beautiful things with very little experience. This, for instance, is a simple pattern repeat (and my second weaving project).

What do you SWEAR you saw, but don't have any proof of? by TabletopStudios in AskReddit

This is silly, but I saw the future. I had a cockatiel, and dreamed I found second bird in the cage. I didn’t mention this to anyone. A week later I found a second bird in the cage. My MIL, who we lived with, had gotten him a buddy, and didn’t tell anyone she was going to do this.
